Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie is out in the garage working on his truck. There is a bit more you have to do for a vehicle in the north during the winter than in the south. Berto bought him the F110 for his last birthday and Sam wants it to be in good condition for a long long time. So he has the tools pulled out over near the truck and the hood up.
Tabitha Smith What's a girl to do when she's off work at her paying job, ditching work at her non-paying job and her students are busy with other classes? Well "borrow" a car from the garage and head into town of course. Thus is is that Tabby finds herself in the garage this fine afternoon.

Of course this plan does get a great big wrench thrown into the works when she finds her dear friend, Sam, at work in said garage which makes borrowing his truck a more difficult proposition. In retaliation for his being in the wrong place at the right time, Tabby rolls a tiny non-destructive flash-bang over at his feet and silently counts it down.
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie does jump just a bit when it goes off. He was paying attention to the truck and not his surroundings. Luckily the hood is high enough he does not bang his head into it. He turns and looks over to Tabby, a brow raised and says "Yes?" He knows her enough to know that was just a friendly poke type thing.
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith saunters over slowly in the way all women raised in The South have and flashes him a little grin, "Well fancy finding you here, Mister Guthrie. Something wrong with your truck?"
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie shakes his head and says "Na, just about time for an oil change, so Ah figured Ah would do it here, where they got all the tools Ah could need. Then if Ah am going to do that might as well do all the winterizing for it as well. You know what Ah mean?"
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith shrugs a shoulder as she walks over, "Not really. I never winterized a car before. I don't think we did that back in Virginia and besides I don't own a car." She leans on the side of the car and looks down inside the open hood.
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie nods a bit and says "Up here there is the whole salt on the road, a lot more than back home, so you have to prepare the undercarriage, or the salt will rust it out, and then you have to get the right antifreeze, and such." He looks over to her, and says "You thinking about getting one now that your working?"
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith shakes her head, "Nope. Then I'd have to let someone teach me how to take care of it or ya know, talk one of my dear friends into doing it for me."
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie smirks a bit and says "And Ah wonder who would be drafted into that position." He does move to check the oil, and says "You want to learn a bit even if your not going to use it?"
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith smirks back at him, "Well it'd probably be Jimmy since you don't really live here anymore even though I do see ya a lot around here for someone who has his own place with his girlfriend. Although Jimmy has been real busy with school lately." She glances down at the engine again then shrugs, "I suppose it doesn't hurt to know how even if I don't have a car."
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie will motion over to of the wheeled platforms, and says "Grab one of those." He motions as he already has one of his own "Starting with changing the oil, and that means we have to go under the truck. While it is higher than most cars, we still have to be on out back to get to it."
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith straightens and walks over to get the wheeled contraption, "Is this going to result in me needing a bath, Sam? I mean this isn't my favorite top but pink and oil don't really get along."
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie chuckles a bit and says "Well depends on hos hands on you get but Ah will try to make sure Ah am the one who gets the messiest." He will get on his back and slides under the truck with a plastic container.
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith lays back on her own platform and wheels back under the truck beside Sam so she can see what he's doing. "I'm surprised me hair even fits under here," she jokes.
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie chuckles and says "Well again, we are lucky it is a pick up truck." He teases back to her, and says "Ok, from down here it is easier to get to different parts of the engine." He names a few of them for her, and then points out the oil output valve. "We will turn that to let the old oil pour out."
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith doesn't like to study, but learning things from a demonstration and hands-on practice isn't anything like studying. Tabby's not dumb. She just has a short attention span sometimes. She pays careful attention as Sam points everything out then repeats back the names quietly as she watches, "So that's what I want to stay away from when you're fiddling with it if I don't wanna have oil all over me, right?"
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie nods a bit and says "And you always want to make sure to have your bucket under it, as long as you pay attention you will only get a bit on your hands, not to bad honestly.
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith hmms, "So if I have gloves for the dirty work I can avoid getting dirty in the process if I'm careful right?" She scoots a little bit away from where the oil is going to drain.
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie says, "Mostly, not always but yea if your careful your not going to get to messy." He turns the valve to let the oil go into the pan "You want to do this ever so often it will keep your engine lasting longer, and the truck drives better.""
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith asks idly, "So just how much money does this save over just having someone do it for you?"
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie hmms and says "Well with an oil change, 20-40 bucks or so. You save the labor, plus you get to make sure it is done the way you want it done.
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith nods, "Seems worth it if you know what you're doing. Or you could ruin your engine if you do it wrong I guess."
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie says, "Well, changing oil is pretty easy one, as long as you put the right type back in and get things type, don't under or over fill it your good. You know how to check oil?""
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith watches the oil drain into the pan and keeps well back from the drips, "That's where you dip the stick to check the levels right?"
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie nods his head and says "There are two different sticks though, oil and transmission fluid." He offers her a smile and says "One if black and the other fluid is more pink red most times.
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith hmms, "And they're clealy labeled which is which right? I wouldn't think you'd want to mix them up."
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie says, "Depends on the car to be honest, some of the older ones more just you know what they look like and such,""
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith looks sideways at him, "So how are things with Allegra? She doing good?"
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie nods and says "Yea, we doing pretty good the dance studio is doing well, and we ended up being partners with the comic store downstairs.
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith chuckles, "Sounds like you don't even really need the job behind the bar at Harry's then. Or maybe you do with how much it costs to live in New York. How goes the plan to become a cop?"
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie says, "Still taking my classes and working on it." He tells her "And the place is Allegra's she was able to get access to some of her funds and she bought the building. The job is more me doing something so I aint just sponging off her ya know?""
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith blinks, "She bought the whole building? Whoa. Well holy heck, Sam." She falls quiet for a moment then carefully pushes out from under the truck and sits up to look herself over for spots of oil or other mess that might have gotten on her.
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie looks over and says "Hey grandparents in Italy own a vineyard that is like one of the big time ones, the bottle we drank there I almost dropped when I found out how much it was worth.
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith reaches over to grab a cloth and wipe off her hands, "Luckily win bottles don't smash easy even if you do drop them. That's some thick glass they make those things out of."
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie nods a bit and says "The whole event I snuck in, Berto would have been the only one I knew who could have gotten in legit, well if he was anti mutant and all."
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith grimaces, "That's right. Her family's pretty anti-mutant aren't they? I don't know how you guys deal with that? Well you know how I dealt with it from my own folks. Avoidance, that's me."
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie says, "Well actually is just her dad, her mom is seeing her and her grandparents are cool, her uncle is a mutant himself, thats part of how her dad became anti mutant I think. Not sure if it is hate or jealousy for sure.""
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith nods, "That's lucky for her I guess. Really easy for the whole non-mutant part of the family to hate the mutant side." She falls silent for a minute then suddenly shakes herself and declares brightly, "Looks like I managed to get out from under there without getting any spots on the pinkness."
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie smiles and says "Don't tempt me to pay ya back for the time bomb." He teases and starts refilling the oil once he has closed the valve "Luckily we were able to head it off when something like that started with Joelle
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith points out, "Splattering my top would not be payback for a harmless flashbang. It would be vandalism and you'd hafta replace the top for me." She flashes him a wink. "Not that you'd do something like that. We're not kids anymore no matter how hard I keep tryin'."
Sam Guthrie Sam Guthrie grins a bit more at her and says "Well at least most of the time we aint." He will walk over and washes his hands making sure no oil or sopa left he does flick water at her playfully
Tabitha Smith Tabitha Smith pops up to her feet and heads over to wash her own hands just to be sure and flicks drops back in his direction, "Well, when we try hard anyway."
