Character Info
Profile
The Silver Surfer, Herald of Galactus, Devourer of Worlds. As a wielder of the Power Cosmic, he is an almost godlike being, although still insignificant by comparison to his patron. He has only appeared recently on Earth to announce the coming of his dread master, although the details of his arrival may hint at a previous connection with Earth. Will he be beginning of Earth's destruction? Or may he be the key to it's salvation?
Timeline
Timeline:
(Timeline adjusted to Earth years and dates)
* ~1940: Born to Jartran and Elmar of Zenn-La, a utopian world ruled by science, located in the Deneb system of the Milky Way. While a paradise, many Zenn-Lavians suffered from lack of direction due to the fact that their world had essentially overcome all struggles and hardships.
* ~1960s: Losing his parents to the ennui typical of their world, Norrin grew ever more disolusioned with his existence, retreating into fantasies of the past as viewed through the holographic entertainment of his people. He yearned to be a hero, but his world had no need of them.
* December, 1965 : The Devourer of Worlds, Galactus, approaches Zenn-La. Norrin approaches him on a spacecraft, and on behalf of his people, offers himself in their place. Galactus agrees, and grants him a fragment of the Power Cosmic, making him his Herald. However, there is a great price, as now he will serve in finding other worlds to die in place of his own. Norrin's new appearance reflects his fantasies and the heroic stories he used to watch.
* Though at first he attempted to retain his idealism, leading Galactus to uninhabited worlds, his task grew more difficult over time. Galactus 'eased' his suffering by dampening his emotions, allowing him to serve without remorse. He spends decares serving Galactus in this capacity, although he is not his only Herald, seeing much of the universe.
* 1995: Reed Richards briefly makes contact with Galactus via an exploratory probe. He dispatches his Herald to observe the source of this transmission, and the Silver Surfer secretly visits Earth. Inspired by what he sees but sensing that the planet's cosmic significance would make it of great value to his master, he undertakes a brief rebellion and conceals what he learns about the location of the world.
* Late 2000s: For reasons unknown to him, his master's rate of consumption begins to accelerate. To match the pace, he activates multiple Heralds at the same time, something previously unheard of. This increased rate of destruction is disruptive to galactic society, indirectly spurring multiple alien civilizations to hostility, expansion, and war.
* 2021: Events on Earth and elsewhere create energies easily detectible by the Devourer. To combat his own dangerously increasing hunger, he sets out to consume these more potent worlds, but understands that unlike the lone civilizations he has targered in the past, many of these will be strongly defended. His Heralds do not just scout the worlds, but must -make them ready-, often by breaking down whatever resistance they might offer.
* 2024, Febuary: The aggressive campaign comes in contact with the Green Lantern Corps. Advising against challenging them, he is castigated by one of his rival Heralds who jumps at the opportunity to prove himself: much of the Corps are subsequently slaughtered at Taurus A in the Crab Nebula.
* 2024, ongoing: The Heralds, including the Silver Surfer, are dispatched to Earth, Maltus (now M'Kraan in Shi'ar space), Oa, and elswhere.

Personality
Guilt:
Forced into the grim task of delivering worlds to his insatiable master, Norrin lives with incredible guilt for his past actions. Under Galactus' direct sway, this is highly suppressed, but it remains a powerful force within his psyche, agitating for action.
Noble:
Although often forced to act as an agent of unimaginable destruction on his master's behalf, Norrin is inherently among the noblest of spirits in the cosmos, a person of deep empathy, kindness, and self-sacrifice, eager to put others before himself in all things, as he did for his homeworld. Although he had little chance to live such a life originally, he was inspired by fiction and histories of heroic action, and sees much of the same in the spirit of the people of Earth.
Character Sheet
Powers
Cosmic Awareness:
As an expression of the Power Cosmic turned toward understanding and observation of the universe rather than manipulation of it, the Silver Surfer possesses a kind of limited omniscience. Although he cannot be aware of everything, everywhere all at once, he can easily detect large scale changes in the cosmic tapestry at essentially unlimited distance. These senses include not only the entire traditional energy spectrum (such as witnessing the birth of a distant star via its energy output), but also more abstract occurences, such as experiencing the death of a world, the birth of powerful new ideas, and so on, with his focus greatly improved when it comes to more familiar subjects or via more intense concentration.
At a more mundane scale, he can easily 'see' across every possible spectrum, as well as see other kinds of energy such as psionic or magical expressions, easily distinguishing illusions or perceiving across dimensional barriers.
Invulnerability:
The Surfer's trademark silver skin is nearly impervious, capable of surviving blows from cosmic beings or the heat and pressure at the core of a star.
Power Cosmic:
The Power Cosmic is, as its name suggests, an expression of the fundamental power of the universe. Even the tiny fragment granted to Norrin Radd by Galactus is a gift of almost unimaginable potency and versatility, and all his abilities as the Silver Surface stem from this fundamental source.
Commanding the forces of reality at a fundamental level, it gives him nearly unparalleled control over matter and energy alike. This can be used for trivial effect like blasts, shields, and constructs, or power redirection or absorbption, to transform matter in shape, state or composition, or even create it outright. This can be used even on living matter, creating life or healing. This control extends to even more obscure and esoteric forces, from those at the fringe of scientific understanding like gravity and space-time, to things humans might call 'magic,' interacting with abstract concepts like living souls and other dimensions. Its fundamental nature also makes it difficult if not impossible to subvert via these 'lesser' modes.
In short, the power allows nearly anything, with a basic scope of up to about planetary scale when considering only his own inherent power, and potentially beyond with his ability to absorb energy from other sources or via greater empowerment by his master.
Speed:
To execute his master's work, the Silver Surfer is capable of easily crossing interstellar distances, traveling at many times the speed of light while flying upon his surfboard.
Strength:
The Power Cosmic allows him almost infinite strength via any traditional measurement. Although it might take focus and exertion, he is capable of moving stellar objects and overcoming overwhelming forces like that of a black hole.
Unending:
The limitless nature of the Power Cosmic sustains the life of the Silver Surfer essentially indefinitely, without need of any other source of sustenance and without fatigue. He is immortal and tireless, at least by any mortal comprehension of the terms, and can readily heal himself from any injury he does happen to sustain.
Skills
Combat:
Despite (or perhaps because of) the godlike abilities of the Power Cosmic, the Silver Surfer is merely a competetant hand-to-hand fighter, although not an expert. However, he is known to transform his surfboard to use as a shield or melee weapon like a sword or mace, and is reasoanbly proficient in such uses, perhaps in part because of his close bond to his 'weapon.'
Cosmic Knowledge:
In his service to Galactus, the Silver Surfer has traveled much of the infinite cosmos, which holds great fascination for him and is one of the few joys of his otherwise grim work. He has witnessed many things across the universe, and possesses useful knowledge on the vast diversity of creatures, places, and phenomena that it contains. Notably, he is among the few beings who know anything of the true nature of his master, and while even he does not know the full truth of his origins or weaknesses, he likely knows where such knowledge might be found.
Science:
Prior to taking on the role of Galactus' herald, Norrin studied science in the footsteps of his father. Zenn-La was a highly advanced world, and so his knowledge is considerably advanced by Earth standards.
Resources
Surfboard:
Although the Silver Surfer's emponymous means of conveyance is essentially just an extension of his own body and powers, it remains an important asset, and his reliance on this iconic presentation may reflect its powerful role in his own psyche, acting as a sort of 'foci' for his expression of the Power Cosmic. Physically, the board is every bit as indestructible as he is, extruded entirely of the same impermeable silver material. Via matter manipulation it can become almost any object as needed, serving often as a shield or weapon as well as a vehicle. Although it is not strictly necessary for his flight, it does seem to enhance this ability, giving him greater control and maneuverability, and perhaps even speed than attempting to travel without it.
Weaknesses
Herald:
Norrin's transformation into the Silver Surfer came only at the cost of his service to Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds. While it is hard to say that his master is truly evil, a simple force of nature acting out its needs, or a higher being of incomprehensibly alien goals and logic, he is an unimanginably destructive force upon the universe. Beyond this, he is a stern master, and is doubtless to harshly punish any action taken against his orders.
Numb:
Galactus suppressed Norrin's inherently noble spirit, replacing it with something coldly logical - necessary for his service as a Herald.
Power Source:
The Power Cosmic powers all of his abilities. Although infinite in nature, his portion is not, and while it regenerates over time, overuse in a short time frame can exhaust his power. Without it, he loses access to his most esoteric abilities and can no longer enhance his basic statistics to such near-infinite scales, although his still considerable baseline (ie of 100-ton strength, durable metal skin, high-speed flight, etc) would remain. Theoretically, severing him from the power permanently could revert him to his original alien form completely, although such a feat would require abilities on par with the Power Cosmic itself.
Surfboard:
As much as his symbol strengthens him, there is something about the Silver Surfer's iconic conveyance that also limits him. Although under normal circumstances he can re-create it easily if it is destroyed, there is some degree to which the surfboard represents his connection to the Power Cosmic as well as his tie to Galactus, both empowering him and binding him to his service, an object of power and millstone simultaneously. Thus, while not a weak point in a physical sense, it can serve as a psychological or metaphsyiscal one for efforts meant to bind or disrupt his power.
