Al Pratt was an auxiliary member of the Great Lakes Defenders. Born in 1914, Pratt was a skinny and physically weak young man. He started training in boxing under the great Joe Morgan and his protege James Harper. He became a proficient martial artist and developed a powerlifter physique.
