It was formed by spiritual entities that balked at the return of the [[New Gods]] to Earth, following [[Ragnarok]] and the resurrection of the [[Demiurge]]; their goal was to preserve the life force of the planet itself, and they saw humanity as a threat to that plan.

The League of Assassins is a monastic order founded by the legendary crime lord Ra's al-Ghul in 1460 AD. Ra's created the League as a cover for his own long-term plans, after he discovered he had been made immortal by the Lazarus Pits. Ra's would frequently give his name to proteges and stand-ins, masquerading as a lieutenant or majordomo. The League provided a powerful tool for Ra's to both acquire temporal wealth and power as well as build a world to his own liking. He frequently ran afoul of the machinations of other immortal conquerors, notably Vandal Savage. Whereas Vandal sought to whip humanity along the path of forced evolution, Ra's methods focused on bringing the residents of the world closer to nature and steering them away from the evils of industrialization and nationalist sentiment.

The League has been responsible for the downfall of several major civilizations and destroyed many cities. They aided the Bolsheviks in displacing the Russian Tsar, snuck Napoleon off of Elba, and set Chicago afire. When the Harbingers stoked World War II to life, Ra's directed the League's resources and efforts to fighting the Nazi war machine on all fronts.
