Madripoor is a sovereign nation and a major shipping hub for the South China Sea. Approximately 250,000 people live in the area, which is somewhat more than one mile square.

Madripoor is not lawless but corruption is rampant. Politicians are mostly bought and owned by the shipping companies that use the port of call to dump waste in the water, move goods without paying taxes, and smuggling illegal items.
