Having spent a few years on the streets since running away from home at sixteen, Maria King has a mutant power which is active and affecting her life, though it is taking her time to realize that. Just doing her best to get by in a world she considers dark and full of peril. Perhaps she might find it in herself to one day become someone that others look up to. Even, a hero?

Timeline

Timeline:
* Nov 2004 - Maria is born to Richard and Emelia King in the New Lots section of Brooklyn. Richard is a mechanic. Emelia was a stay at home mom, whose history is unknown to her daughter.

* 2010 - Emelia King disappears. Friends believe it was to get away from her abusive husband.

* 2010 - Maria starts going to her father's garage after school. Over the years, learns something about automotive mechanics.

* 2016 - Spending more time on the streets. Brief school suspension for part in theft.

* 2017 - Comes home one day to find her father got rid of her dog. Maria's life starts to spiral downwards.

* 2020 - Abusive father finally drives her to run away from home after a particularly bad night. Unknown to Maria, this awakened her mutant X gene. Maria takes to living on the streets, often homeless for stretches. Occasional gut feelings originating from her power keep her from falling into addiction and other perils. But even with that, life is tough.

Personality

Energetic:
Particularly in private, Maria is an energetic, fun, dreamer. She is goofy in the best sense, warm and caring. She often makes people close to her laugh, which is probably in large part a self-defense mechanism. Because people who are laughing are less likely to do tear you down. However, around strangers or in situations she doesn't feel as comfortable, these parts of her may be suppressed.

Kind-Hearted:
Having been the small one most of her life, and someone who was picked on quite heavily, Maria has ended up with a lot of empathy. In particular she has a soft spot for animals, most of whom don't seem capable of destructive behaviors like people. And the animals that do, they tend to be that way because of what people put them through. And that just makes Maria feel for them all the more that they shouldn't be that way.

Scared:
Deep down Maria is scared. There's a sense of foreboding within her. Though to outward appearances she often seems positive and sunny, part of that is to hide the scars that a rough life has given her. Even when she's being optimistic, that is hiding that down inside she expects bad things to happen. Because bad things have always happened.

Powers

Precognition:
Maria's mutant powers include a precognitive ability. It is neither flawless nor constantly active. Even when she comes to understand it, it will tend to work best reflexively.

Early on it only manifests as feelings or urges. That man shouldn't be trusted. The alley doesn't feel safe to use today. In time Maria can learn to sense attacks made on her to be able to counter them more easily, blocking a punch or moving out of the path that a bullet is going to travel when it is fired. It might give insights into possible future outcomes as far as a few days in advance.

While it could help in games of chance, it is hit or miss when it would function. It could not be relied on for any specific flip of a card or spin of a roulette wheel. Though it might make a difference on a key hand. Beyond situations like helping her in a fight, it is largely a storytelling tool.

Telekinesis:
Maria is capable of a form of telekinesis, with unique limits. She can exert a pushing or pulling force on an object, but only directly towards or away from her chest. She cannot directly move objects side to side or up and down, or make one levitate unless she's pulling directly up exactly counteracting gravity.

If she pushes on something heavier than herself, her body will move rather than the object. Moving a heavier object requires bracing herself using a heavier object, physically or with TK. While these forces can make her body move as a whole, the TK itself does not cause direct strain or harm to her body.

By pushing on an object below her she could throw herself into the air, moving like a baseball rather than flying like Superman. More TK against a heavy object would be needed to adjust her course, push herself back up when she falls, or land lightly.

Her max TK strength is about that of a pickup truck, about two tons. She can affect multiple objects at once. Two or three objects could be affected all at her max strength (allowing her to brace herself), but additional objects beyond that cause her strength on all affected objects to drop.

Skills

Animal Handling:
Maria had a dog growing up, and spent a lot of time training him. She's also volunteered a few times at shelters and rescues, enough to have a solid idea on how to properly interact with animals of various types and levels of familiarity with her. She knows basic medical care for animals appropriate for being around a vet, like that chocolate is bad for dogs and what to do if they eat it, or how to handle an aggressive cat. But she does not know actual medicine like a vet.

Athletics:
Though Maria has never been a standout athlete, she is in good shape and played at least most of the normal sports through middle school. In particular she's a good ice skater, there having been a parking lot of a derelict building that people would flood in the winter for skating.

Languages:
Having always had a good ear for languages Maria has picked up a smattering of them from the multilingual mixture of Brooklyn. She is capable of conversational amounts of Spanish, and just a little short of that in French and Hebrew. She knows just enough Russian and Chinese she could ask for directions or haggle a price, and could follow the gist of a conversation if better than she could contribute to it.

Mechanic:
Having spent a lot of time hanging out in the garage her father worked at, in lieu of him paying a babysitter, Maria has learned a fair amount about taking care of cars and motorcycles. She can perform basic maintenance, as well as repair some of the more common problems one runs into. She knows a little about body work, and could potentially MacGyver something up related to a car in a moment of great need.

Street Smarts:
Maria has spent a lot of time on the streets of rough areas of New York City, including being essentially homeless since she was sixteen. She is familiar with gangs, their markings, turf and interactions. She is familiar with how the drug trade and street prostitution work. She knows where fences can be found, the names of various criminals, and the bad dudes that you just steer clear of. Within areas that she's spent a lot of time she tends to know bolt holes and even a friendly face or two that might be turned to for assistance. If sparingly.

Theft:
Living on the streets has meant sometimes turning to less than legal ways to get by. Especially given Maria has been eating a lot for someone her size since she set out on her own. She's learned to pick pocket, how to pick out a good mark. Basic methods of breaking and entering. While she's not the best with security systems, she knows where to cut the power line to shut one down, and a few methods for defeating the lower end ones. She's also pretty good at moving quickly and quietly.

Resources

Not Much:
Maria has very little to her name. Some clothes, most obtained from thrift stores. A basic phone that is out of juice as often as not. Her old ice skates that she took when she bailed on her father. An old Kindle with a few favorite books in it, which is also out of juice more often than not. Food is her biggest concern most of the time, there isn't money to spend on other things.

Weaknesses

Appetite and Powers:
With the activation of her mutant X Gene, Maria's appetite went way up. She often consumes on a slow day twice what she used to eat. If she's exerted herself, especially by using her powers, she might need even more than that.

Her powers directly run off what she eats. So if she is going without food for extended periods, her powers are going to suffer in how effective they are.

Dad Is Not Happy:
Maria ran out on her father at the age of sixteen. That doesn't mean he just let her go though. He has sought her out to try to bring her back home. And it isn't likely to go well for her if he manages to do so.

He has a few friends on the NYPD, and he tends to work cheap for cops to stay on their good side. Maria is fearful of police because she'll never quite know if one of them is a friend of her father's, who will tell him where she is, or take her to him, or find a reason to arrest her and let him know so he can come bail her out.

Lack of Education:
Maria dropped out of school when she ran off at the age of sixteen. This greatly reduces the work she could get even if she was able to hold down a normal job. Which she's wary of doing for worry her father could somehow track her down via her taxes. Which means she's usually limited to work that doesn't require her social security number. Jobs like that often involve a boss taking advantage of their workers.

Small Human:
Maria is not only a normal human who can be hurt easily by powered individuals, but she's quite a small one. Most anyone she tangles with is going to outweigh her and be stronger. At best she's scrappy, having learned to fight tooth and nail on the streets. But that is always the last resort.
