Terry O'Neil is the son of The Cheshire cat, a being from a pocket dimension with tremendously arbitrary rules (colloquially labeled 'Wonderland' by a certain someone who happened to fall into it at one point, wrote a book about it and introduced the idea to our dimension) who escaped from said dimension and came to Earth and assumed a mortal shape. Because there can ever only be one Cheshire cat at a time, Terry's father vanished from existence the day Terry was born- Terry's not aware of this, as his father abandoned his mother (who did not know of his true identity) the moment he realized this would eventually happen. At the age of eighteen, Terry has started exhibiting strange powers and a transformation. He is about to set on a path to both seek answers and explore his emergent powers.

Timeline:
* 1995: The Cheshire cat escapes the Sundering of Wonderland and into Earth. Takes on a mortal appearance and the identity of Chester Dodgson.

* 1997: Chester meets and falls in love with Agatha O'Neil. The two become a couple, though they do not marry.

* 2001: Agatha becomes pregnant in June. Chester consults contacts in the underground mystical community. What he learns saddens him, though he never discloses it. He remains with Agatha, though he becomes more and more prone to melancholy. Chester disappears in December with no explanation. A missing person report is issued, but police can find no trace of him- or his identity.

* 2002: Terry is born in March in San Diego, CA. Agatha will never discuss to Terry's father was, only to mention that he abandoned her shortly before the birth.

* 2004: Moved to New York City, where Agatha opened a successful private investigation firm.

* 2016: Became interested in parkour and urban exploration. Becomes interested in his mother's business and starts helping with clerical work around the office. Agatha slowly starts familiarizing Terry with the principles of detective work.

* 2018: Started manifesting strange, short-burst and unexplained phenomena at rare, stressful times. Manages to keep them hidden from his mother.

* 2019: Graduates highschool. Phenomena increases in frequency, becomes concerned. Goes back to San Diego for a time to find answers about who his father was. Finds mostly dead ends and returns.

* 2020: Moves to Metropolis after following a lead. Officially (to his mother) he's there for college.

Personality

Behind the Grin:
When he moves past the jokes and the cool cat facade, Terry actually has a very caring side. Though naturally gregarious, he is also reticent to let anyone get too close. He's afraid of getting hurt, but he has learned how to keep people at arm's length while allaying the suspicions with good humor and jesting.

Gregarious:
Terry talks to everyone and anyone, and is quick to make acquaintances wherever he goes. He has a natural charm and curiosity that makes him genuinely interested in other people's stories, and he has a good memory.

Look At a King:
Terry's very much driven by the spirit of the Cheshire cat to be something of an iconoclast. He isn't one for blind obedience to authority and 'Because I said so' arguments. His irreverence doesn't quite reach nihilistic proportions, as he is capable of respect, only that he is more likely to respect a person's actual words and deeds over a title or an office behind which one can hide.

Proud:
A cat's pride is his most precious posession. As a certain author once said "what is the point of killing your enemies if they can't live with the knowledge that you've won?" Terry is very much a creature of pride and can be tempted by the need to always be Top Cat.

Strong-Willed:
The downside of being extremely strong-willed is also the tendency of wanting to have one's own way, with little in the way of compromise. Often thinking his counsel is best, Vorpal has issues with the collaboration of equals: he's all for it, as long as he's the more equal partner. Herding cats isn't easy, after all, and he is aware that he must work with others. Often, he does try... but it's hard for a cheshire to change his stripes, and there are times when he finds himself falling back on this oldest of feline habits, especially if he feels he is being disrespected or dismissed,

Trickster:
Mischief is the operative word, and Terry considers the art of the prank to be the highest expression of the art of war, whether it be adding that extra 'pizzazz' to his dealings against criminals, or by playing pranks on or firing one-liners at his fellow heroes. He usually does have a good sense of when a joke is carried too far... but sometimes the allure of the payoff is just too great.

Character Sheet

Powers

Acute Hearing:
When in Cheshire form, Vorpal's senses are heightened to resemble those of a cat: he possesses the hearing of a cat, capable of perceiving sounds up to 64 kHz (1.6 octaves above the range of a human.) As with all felines, his eyes possess a tapetum lucidum, the reflective layer behind the retina which improves his ability to see in the dark, giving him a minimum light detection threshold up to seven times lower than that of humans (while, of course, being unable to see in absolute darkness,) and his sense of smell is about fourteen times as strong as a human's

Catlike Grace:
When in Cheshire form, Vorpal's unique composition allows him to perform gymnastic feats easily- his reflexes, dexterity, balance and flexibility are above those of a human being. It allows him to run over narrow surfaces such as ledges or even cables and wires without losing his balance, and to perform acrobatic jumps onto and from them. Vorpal's agility is actually above that of peak human potential due to his altered nature.

Chaos In the Court:
Due to the unique nature of his transformation, when in his Cheshire form Vorpal's mind is a rather interesting experience- those who venture into his mind will find that there is a strong taste of Wonderland therein, not unlike being under the effect of psychotropic drugs. The unsettlingly strange nature of his psyche makes him very resilient against psychic manipulation and mind-reading. Prolonged telepathic contact might even leave the telepath with a mild 'contact high' on the psychic level.

Claws That Catch:
Vorpal's claws are standard predator fare for a feline--they are best used when striking flesh and tearing clothing, but they are not durable enough to penetrate armor--they are more apt for climbing, however. They are at their most useful on porous and rough surfaces and completely useless against slick metal, marble, or similar surfaces. If they were to strike something that is far too hard for them, the claws will break or be damaged. Eventually, they will grow back again in the fullness of time.

Illusions:
Vorpal can create false sensory impressions. This ranges from visual images to phantom sounds and smells. The focus required for the illusion is directly proportional to how complex and large the required illusion is. Illusions have no substance and cannot have any real-world effect- anyone who touches one will simply walk through them. Illusions cannot provide nutrition or warmth-- thus, an illusory double of Vorpal created in combat will not register in the infra-red spectrum, although it is slightly harder to pinpoint the real Vorpal in the psychic realm due to his illusion being infused with his willpower. Active illusions will be disrupted if Vorpal's concentration slips. Vorpal can use his power of illusion to turn himself invisible, but it will not fool standard methods of detection such as infra-red, touch and scent unless he were to mask his scent.

The illusions are not psychic in nature but visual, so disbelieving them will not dispel them. Any dispel spell from a magic school has a chance of dispelling them.

Vorpal cannot create visual illusions if his eyes are closed for any period of time faster than blinking. The oly exception to this rule is his ability to turn himself invisible. Vorpal likewise cannot create auditory or olfactory illusions if he finds those senses are disabled or otherwise overwhelmed at the time (such as, for example, under a sonic attack, or being overwhelmed by an ammonia bomb.)

Rabbit Holes:
Vorpal is capable of creating 'rabbit holes' in the fabric of reality-- two connected portals that may be placed anywhere within his line of sight while in combat. Anything entering into one portal will immediately emerge from the other, maintaining the same direction and momentum relative to the portal (until gravity asserts itself, in the case of a change of direction due to portal placement).

The portal may not be closed while a living being is crossing it. Inanimate objects, on the other hand, do not have this protection and can be 'sliced' by the portals- though indestructible and magical objects such as Mjolnir are exempt from this as well.

Vorpal can perform long-distance trips with the rabbit holes, but this is more complex and needs focus, and thus cannot be done while in the middle of combat. He doesn't necessarily need to have visited his destination, as long as he can have access to an image of it such as a photograph or a live camera feed. Maps and similar may be used, but it is impossible to accurately pinpoint one particular location and the portal will open to a location somewhere in the general vicinity of the intended destination.

Substitutiary Locomotion:
Drawing upon the raw chaos magic that courses within him, Vorpal can imbue chosen objects with a life of their own and direct them. Vorpal needs to be able to touch the item in question in order to instill it with life. If the casting is successful, things that are brought to life can move on their own or under his command, but they are -not- under his direct control. They can 'sense' his thoughts in a very primitive way, but however they carry out their commands is entirely dependent on each item, as each imbuement dons the item with a temporary 'personality'(but usually one more or less aligned with the kind of history or ownership the item has had in the past)

Items are only animated for the duration of the scene- furthermore, the enchantment is dispelled the moment an item suffers significant damage. Magical items cannot be brought to life in this fashion, and unique items such as the Lasso of Truth or Mjolnir will also remain unresponsive.

Transformation:
Terry is, most of the time, just a normal human teenager. All of his powers are locked away from him until he willingly transforms into his Cheshire cat form and becomes Vorpal. In order to transform, he has discovered, he needs a reflective surface into which he can gaze. Anything reflective enough to be able to see his eyes works. And, while the transformation can be done silently, he finds that uttering the famous line 'We're All Mad Here' ensures the transformation will be a success.

In order to transform back, he needs to repeat the process, although the verbal component is not necessary to turn back into Terry.

Skills

Detective Work:
Terry possesses the basic knowledge level of detection and investigation. Although he does not have a lot of practical experience, he knows how to drum up sources, ask the right questions and do some digging around, as well as the basics on identity protection, surveillance, and gathering evidence.

Parkour:
Terry is quite an advanced parkourist, able to quickly negotiate obstacles and finding alternate routes across unconventional territory, skills honed over years of practice and augented by his enhanced reflexes and agility.

Stealth:
When it comes to stealth, few creatures are as stealthy as a cat. Vorpal can move quietly, is flexible enough to hide in tight spaces, and can dart across deftly with a minimum amount of noise.

Resources

Connections:
Terry does have some valuable resources that he can tap through his mother's agency- contacts, information and the network of collaborators. He can't ask too many questions without making his mother suspicious, but if Terry were ever in a real bind, he can count on his mother and her colleagues to help.

Weaknesses

Only Human:
Terry is absolutely powerless when he is in his human form and has no access whatsoever to any of his special abilities. While many of the Cheshire-specific weaknesses also do not apply to him while he's in human shape, he is still pretty much a defenseless human.

Order In the Court:
As a creature of chaos, Vorpal is extremely susceptible to the effects of order and holy magic. Dispelling rituals from white or holy magic can also affect him negatively, not because he is inherently demonic, but rather because his metaphysical nature dislikes the rigid and established order found in those schools. Contact with magic of this quality can interfere with his powers (with the exception of those tied to his feline form,) making them fizzle for up to twenty minutes after the first exposure depending on how strong the magic was. Healing spells work on Vorpal, but they do so at a cost: healing magic (since it essentially reconstitutes his body) causes Vorpal a great deal of distress, leaving him dazed and slow. For several minutes after such a spell has been cast on him, his dexterity is greatly impaired and he may behave as if drunk or stoned. It is very possible for a very powerful healing spell or blessing to revert him into his human form, if sufficiently weakened.

Reeks of Chaos:
Not all chaos creatures are evil- but most mystics are familiar with the evil ones because they're the ones that get the most attention. Although not inherently evil, Vorpal's aura practically exudes mystic energies attuned to the world of Chaos, which will put most mystics on the defensive. Thanks to the works of entities like the Lords of Chaos and their allies, most mystics believe that Chaos should never be trusted- this can be a hindrance to Vorpal when dealing with heroic mystics and heroic groups that have mysics in their ranks

Secret Identity:
There's no two ways about this, Terry has to hide his secret identity to protect his only remaining family from harm. All it would take is one careless transformation and someone with a phone, and his cover could be blown.

Sense and Sensibility:
When in Cheshire form, Vorpal's heightened sense of hearing leaves him particularly vulnerable to sonic attacks, which can stun him severely depending on their intensity. Light attacks can reduce net visual acuity: in response to light attacks, his slit-like irises close narrowly over the eye, reducing the amount of light on the sensitive retina, but decreasing his perception significantly. Extremely nauseating or disgusting smells, or ones that are extremely acrid or irritating can have a detrimental effect on his general awareness as well.
