Cold Night, Warm Fire
Date of Scene: 22 January 2024
Location: Lake House - Wayne Estate
Synopsis: A cold front and snow storm find Dick and Stephanie talking in front of the fire.
Cast of Characters: Stephanie Brown, Dick Grayson

Stephanie Brown has posed:
It's freezing out. The temperature is down to zero and the wind child takes it down another 15 degrees. The wind beats against the glass walls of the lake house, making one glad they are inside. Snow is falling at a sharp angle from the wind, white blanketing everything in a layer of pristine white.

The door opens, letting in a gust of cold air before Stephanie can slam it closed behind her. She kicks off her boots and lugs in the bundle of firewood in a cloth carrier that she'd braved the cold to get.

The blond carries it over and sets it beside the nice toasty fire that has been kept roaring to offset the cold outside. Once she's set it down, she takes off her coat and gloves, moving back to the rack by the door to hang them. "I got more wood. How's that hot chocolate coming?" she calls.

Dick Grayson has posed:
In the kitchen, Dick has two giant coffeecups set up and ready to go. He's whisking the mix of cocoa powder, milk, water and vanilla he's heating on the stove. After a moment, he picks up the pan and pours the mixture into the waiting mugs. For the final touch, some half and half goes into each mug to bring it down to a drinkable temperature.

Having planned ahead, he picks up the tray the mugs are on and carries it into the living room, putting it down on the coffee table in front of the couch. "Here we go, perfect for warming you inside and out. Thanks for grabbing the wood despite the howling blizzard."

Stephanie Brown has posed:
Stephanie Brown pulls off her sweater and the sweats she'd put on to go outside, wearing a pair of shorts, and a t-shirt with Green Arrow's logo on it. She plops down onto the couch where the blankets are already waiting, and pats the couch beside her. Assuming Dick takes the seat, she pulls the nice warm sherpa fleece blanket over them before picking up her mug.

Stephanie carefully settles in against Dick as she takes the first sip. "I'll find ways you can make it up to me later," she teases, resting her head on Dick's shoulder. "I have to say, having glass walls really is kind of cool when the weather is like this.

The lights are mostly out, just the fireplace providing light now that the kitchen light is off. Allowing them to see the falling snow and the beautiful lake covered in white outside. "Though I wouldn't have said no to a little of that weather we had in Sydney right now either."

Dick Grayson has posed:
Dick smiles and settles in beside her, slipping one arm around her shoulders as she leans against him. "Yeah, the sun and beaches are wonderful, but there's something to be said for this too. The only downside to it is having to keep the exit from the cave free of snow. Not like I want to explain to the guy who does the driveways why I want a path to a rock wall plowed."

Taking sip of the hot chocolate he sighs happily, adding "Either way, as long as we're together anywhere is just about perfect. And I look forward to seeing what you come up with."

Stephanie Brown has posed:
Stephanie Brown snuggles in contentedly against Dick, taking another sip of her hot chocolate and then resting her hand across his body, fingers resting against the front of his shoulder.

She gently nuzzles her cheek against his chest, visibly savoring being held against him and nestling in so close. A happy little sigh is given. "You know how many nights I laid awake in my bed in my apartment next to campus, imagining what it would be like to have you hold me like this?" she asks Dick.

Another contented sigh is given. "Back then I never really thought it would happen. I still keep expecting to wake up and find out these last few years have just been the most amazing dream," she says, pretty blue eyes looking down a little sheepishly at the admission.

Dick Grayson has posed:
Dick gives her a quick kiss and says "Nah, my dreams never stay this good for as long as this has been, I think we're safely awake." He takes another sip of the hot chocolate. "But I think about the only way things could get any better would be if all the criminals retired so we didn't have to spend nights swinging around the city."

He pauses a moment, then gets a slightly confused expression on his face before saying, "I just tried to think what things would be like if that happened, and you know, I have no idea what I'd do with all the time that would free up."

"I literally have no idea how to live like a normal person." he says, shaking his head. "But it would give us more time, so I'm thinking we could figure things out."

Stephanie Brown has posed:
Stephanie Brown also takes a moment where she seems to consider Gotham without criminals. "But, who would I hit then?" then asks in an overly perplexed voice.

After a pause. "Oh, right. Damian," she says, breaking out in a grin. "Well, I bet we could manage it if we ever had the chance," Stephanie tells Dick. "Oh, speaking of normal people. Or, behaving like normal people anyway. I ran into Strix on campus the other day. She's attending Gotham U," Stephanie says.

She pauses to take another sip of the hot chocolate. Between the warm beverage, the warm Dick Grayson, and the warm blanket and fireplace, the chill from going out to get the wood is passing. "So... I was thinking. You know she doesn't handle the cold well." It being one of the few weaknesses the Court of Owl's Talons have. "I have been working up a special snow suit for her. With some Wayne Tech built in, heaters and things. I was thinking maybe we could get a group together and take her sledding out on Suicide Hill," Stephanie says. Mentioning a huge hill on one of Gotham's islands that is a popular sledding location during winter.

Dick Grayson has posed:
Dick laughs, "I'm sure we could find people for you to spar with. Maybe open a dojo or something, I think we have enough actual experience to teach people self-defense. Not that they'd need it if there were no criminals. Damn, there's that idea down the drain." He takes a sip of hot chocolate.

"Well, at the very least we could take off to Europe or wherever without worrying if our patrols were covered. Maybe buy a superyacht and just travel wherever the whim takes us." He shrugs, "Not that it'll ever happen, but it's kind of nice to dream once in a while before the next night of gargoyle perching."

He looks over towards the outside where snow continues to pile up. "At least on nights like this we typically don't have much to watch out for. I don't think the criminals want to be out in this weather any more than we do."

Stephanie Brown has posed:
Stephanie Brown rests her head back on Dick's shoulder, snuggling up closer. Her fingers brush along his muscular shoulder and tease across his throat before she leans up to add a soft kiss to the caress.

"Yes, I suppose it's unlikely enough to be not worth worrying about, isn't it? There's never a shortage in Gotham. Death, taxes, and clowns with bad makeup," she says, letting out a sigh. One that seems meant to cleanse her mind of the thought of Joker and instead just refocus on the moment.

The fire crackles in the fireplace, the base of coals giving off plenty of heat. "So when I graduate, any thoughts about how you'd feel if I got a job at GCPD? There are some other options of course. I don't know if it would be weird having me around the crime scenes and all. Or the razzing you might take from the other cops," she says, a slight grin at the last part.

Dick Grayson has posed:

Dick laughs and reaches up to brush a lock of her hair back into place. "Are you kidding? They'll all be jealous when they see I married the most beautiful woman in Gotham. I'm actually looking forward to it."

He settles in a little more on the couch, relaxing completely. "So don't worry about that. Wherever you want to apply, I'm fine with. It's just a pity you can't put all the Batgirl stuff on your resume, you'd be able to get any position you applied for. You have more practical experience than people who've been working twenty years."

He holds her lightly, relaxing in the closeness and warmth of her, the blanket and the fire. "I'm also thinking we might want to put a pile of firewood in the cave so we don't need to go out in blizzards when we want a fire."

Stephanie Brown has posed:
Stephanie Brown sits there quietly, snuggled up against Dick, and doesn't say anything for several long moments. Until finally she says, "Ok, that's... so both genius and obvious that I'm sitting here kicking myself for not thinking of it."

She leans up to brush a long, slow, soft kiss to Dick's lips. "And that's for the beautiful compliment," Stephanie says amidst beaming at Dick before nestling her head back down to his shoulder.

She gives another quiet, happy sigh as she watches the flames dance in the fireplace. "You know this is the first time I've ever had a fireplace?" she comments.

Dick Grayson has posed:
With a smile, he returns the kiss. With a teasing glint in his eyes, he murmurs, "Remind me to compliment you more often." He looks over towards the fireplace, then back to her. "Honestly, that's not terribly unusual these days. Whole generations of people growing up in apartments and the like, fireplaces are not seen as much anymore. They've become a bit of a luxury item rather than an essential way to heat your home."

Shaking his head, he says ruefully "And no, I have no idea why I went into teacher mode when we've got such a romantic evening going on." He shrugs a little, careful not to dislodge her. "I'll blame Bruce making me deal with the parade of Robins."
