The Trials

The Amazonian Tournament of Champions (known in the Themysciran language as o Agones, roughly The Trials or The Games) is a legendary event that takes place on the island of Themyscira every 95 years. It is a competition where the most skilled Amazon warriors from different tribes come together to prove their mettle and battle it out for the ultimate prize: the title of the greatest warrior on the island.

The winner of the tournament is heralded as the current champion and is considered to be the most skilled and powerful warrior on Themyscira. The title is highly coveted and comes with a great deal of prestige and respect from fellow Amazons.

Antiope, the fierce and legendary warrior, was the original multi-tournament winner of the Amazonian Tournament of Champions. However, shortly before Nubia's disappearance from Themyscira into the Doom Gate, she claimed the title of the greatest warrior on the island. Nubia's victory made her a hero among the Amazons, but her disappearance left a void in the tournament's history.

In the most recent event in 2013, Diana (also known as Wonder Woman), recently returned to Themyscira after being away since the year 1918, emerged as the victor, earning the title of the greatest warrior on the island. Diana's victory cemented her status as a legendary Amazon warrior and earned her the respect of her fellow Amazons.

The tournament is open to any Amazon to compete in, though usually only a few dozen of the Amazons who have been most successful in smaller festival games or have proven themselves in battle in some way will compete in any given tournament. Queen Hippolyta herself is a notable exception: a lot of Amazons suspect that if she competed she'd win, but she can't be both queen and champion and has thus never entered. As the overseer of the event, she is responsible for ensuring that the combatants are fighting fairly and showcasing their skills to the best of their ability.
