A survivor of the age of the frontier, Jake's spirit-ridden...possessed by a spirit out to devour what she sees as the darkness in the world, one wicked soul at a time. He's been with his ethereal companion long enough to be more an equal partner than a hapless human steed.

Timeline

Timeline:
* December 1, 1837 Jacob Walker is born just outside Savannah, Georgia.

* Fall 1855: Jake heads up to Boston to attend Harvard University, living with a distant branch of the family. He meets his future wife, Helen, through his kin's circle of friends.

* May 1859: Graduates Harvard, enters Harvard's law school.

* April 1861: Finishes his law degree. Civil War begins.

* June 1861: To the fury of his family in the South, Jake takes up a commission in the Union Army. Is disowned.

* April 1862: Marries Helen.

* Summer 1862 to mid-summer 1865: Various battles and skirmishes, until wounded in the Atlanta campaign. By the time he's sufficiently recovered, the war is over. Returns to Boston.

* Early Spring 1868: Moves west to Helena, Montana, opens an office specializing in land claims law. Runs afoul of one of the local gold mining conglomerates when he takes on cases attempting to enforce treaties with the local tribes.

* October 1869: Mining company hires thugs to kill him and his wife, attempting to make it look as if it'd been done by outlaws. Helen is killed, Jake fatally wounded. His prayers are answered by the appearance of a spirit willing to make a bargain. Jake accepts, and the Wolf heals him enough to let him kill their attackers.

Timeline2:
* January 1870: Jake sells house and land, closes down his practice, and takes up wandering, learning how to deal with his new passenger and her insistence on prices paid in blood.

* 1870 - 1910: Wanders the West, working as cowboy, guide, gun for hire (and even for one brief spell, teacher), as his body's refusal to age makes it impossible to linger in any one place too long.

* 1914 - 1918: War comes. Jake travels to England as a volunteer, sees service on the Western front.

* 1920s: Works as an enforcer for bootleggers and mob syndicates, mostly in the northeast.

* 1930s: Wanders the rail routes, the Wolf preying on those who seek to take advantage of the floods of migrants looking for work.

* 1939 - 1945: War in Europe. Again, he volunteers before the US is involved in the war, ending up working with various irregular forces in France.

* Late 1940s to early 1960s: Jake heads south to first Mexico, and then down into South America, maintaining their habit of never lingering long in one place.

* Late 1960s to mid 1970s: Serves in Vietnam, multiple tours.

* 1970s to end of 1990s: Wanderings, mostly in the US, sometimes down to south America again.

* 2001: War in Afghanistan. Jake joins a PMC, serves in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

* 2005: In Iraq, while escorting a supply convoy in a sandstorm, the convoy is attacked by an ifrit. It proves capable of wounding the Wolf while she's manifested, burning her and Jake badly. He's shipped back to the US for treatment, body slowly healing. The Wolf remains crippled and in pain.

* 2005 to the present: Once he's healed enough physically to move on, he sets out to find a sorcerer or shaman who can heal his possessing spirit. Enough of her pain bleeds over to affect him, at least most of the time.

Personality

Loyal:
He's seen so many die, lost so many that he cares about, that Jake is dog-loyal to those he does still have.

Patient:
He may not have all the time in the world, but more than most. Jake's one of those who can let things unfold at their own necessary pace, rather than yield to the temptation to intervene directly.

Reserved:
Jake's gotten so very used to playing his cards close to the vest that unbending to confide in someone goes against his nature. He may not like lying or deceiving, but he'll let silence lead others to draw their own wrong conclusions.

Character Sheet

Powers

Astral Travel:
With the aid of meditation and simple ritual, he can project his spirit to the astral planes. While he's there, he and the Wolf are separate entities. She'll stay by him and protect him, but they're no longer one being. While his spirit is on those planes, his body is effectively comatose. He won't react to physical stimuli and can't defend himself.

Scent of Sin:
The worse the deed, the easier it is for him to track down the perpetrator. The average criminal he'd need to literally cross the path of, albeit within a few days of the given crime. A real monster he could lock on to up to a week afterwards. It takes a recent misdeed to trigger the Wolf's hunting instincts; a serial killer who gave up his bloody pursuits decades ago wouldn't be likely to tweak her instinct.

Spirit Fire:
Not as powerful or as quick as a Rider's Hellfire; Jake can't immolate someone in moments and it does require direct physical contact. However, he can use it on spirits and ghosts as well as people, and it's wonderful for incinerating a body that he's killed by more mundane means. He can burn through ordinary substances in a minute or two, melt ordinary metals and alloys in the same time period. A body, for instance, could be broken down to ash in about five minutes. Magical items may be much more resistant or even immune to this ability.

The Wolf:
Jake's possessing spirit isn't on the same level of power as the vengeance spirits of the canonical Riders. Less a demon than a corrupted animal spirit, something trying to alleviate its own pain by devouring the darkness in the world. It doesn't grant anything like the same degree of resistance to damage or instant healing that Blaze or Reyes's does. Jake can come back from even dismemberment, but we're talking a slow reassembly over days and weeks, not a span of minutes.

The Wolf bolsters Jake's strength and speed, but not all that far beyond human. When the Wolf is in control, Jacob can achieve feats of strength and endurance just beyond human capacity. He can lift over half a ton and shrug off handgun bullets. If he's on the trail of a villain he can go without sleep or rest for most of two weeks.

Skills

Cowboy:
One of the recurring jobs he's worked through out the years is dealing with livestock. He can ride, rope, and herd with the best of them...though he's deliberate in avoiding the rodeo circuit. No attempts at winning fame for his skills. Horses are a particular expertise, everything from catching wild mustangs to more formal training like dressage.

Gunman:
Jake's a survival from an age when most men of his class were expected to have some facility with guns for both hunting and duelling. He's kept abreast with developments in that technology ever since, and is competent with handguns and long arms.

Gunsmith:
Jake's actually very skilled at maintaining, repairing, and restoring firearms from his own original era up to the present day. He's even relatively well known as someone who can solve knotty problems with antique firearms, enough so that he can occasionally do that as a side job.

Occult Knowledge:
While neither scholar nor sorcerer, he's spent the past century-plus on the fringes of the occult world. Even apart from periods of relatively serious and dedicated study, he's just been picking it up for years.

Survival:
Just because the Wolf will keep him alive in nearly any situation doesn't mean that Jake doesn't have to keep himself fed, clothed, and sheltered in situations from desert or high mountain wilderness to the urban jungle. He hasn't let that skill fade.

Tracking:
Like survival, this is another skill Jake had to acquire from life on the frontier. It's stood him in good stead, even though it's mostly men he tracks these days.

Resources

Contacts:
He's got a whole spectrum of contacts, from legitimate sources like the military extending through mercenaries to the thoroughly unsavory, like enforcers for certain criminal cartels. No few of them owe him favors for making bodies disappear.

Fake Ids:
No matter how hard he tries, inevitably there's a moment where it goes wrong, really wrong. Wrong enough that he needs to evade law enforcement for more than a little while, or to simply burn the current identity and pick up a new one. He's got a number of them prepared against those days. Against those times when he has to sink one identity and pick up a new one, he has not only new identities ready and backstopped, but caches of money, valuables, and weapons, here and there amongst the places he's travelled in his long life.

Weaknesses

Addiction:
A spirit's pain isn't to be muted entirely by merely chemical solutions, but that doesn't mean that Jake hasn't tried his damnedest to use those methods. After all, while you may not be able to go down to the corner store and buy laudanum any more, someone on file with the VA as a wounded veteran can usually find a way to winkle painkillers out of the system....and Jack Daniels hasn't changed much over the decades.

Anachronism:
While he may have time-travelled the hard way, as the phrase goes, he's a survivor from a much older and very different America. Sometimes the differences between then and now trip him up.

Magic:
Magic has always been a weakness. Magicians and sorcerers and demons can often sense the Wolf's presence, and more than one of them has sought to steal or bind her for their own advantage.

Wounded Spirit:
The Wolf was wounded by a fire spirit when he was in Iraq, and it's left her in pain ever since. It's been harder to keep control over her impulses. She's not as strong or as focused as she once and even in her dormant spells, it bleeds over into Jake's consciousness. Enough so that he's taken on a whole assortment of bad habits to try and suppress it.

When his control is slipping, for whatever reason, he's more likely to yield to the Wolf's impulse to violence. His thoughts become less clear and directed, more animal-like. Emotions overall become more volatile - not just anger, but fear, making him more likely to lash out.
