A mutant born into the shadows of a dark family life and then thrust further into the darkness, Jaxon is a man made of shadows. While very few are privy to the information, he's the thief known as Tenebris. His ill gotten gains are never kept wholly for himself, but given freely to the downtrodden in Bushwick, the place he calls home - for now. But he's a man on the run, a man always looking over his shoulder, a man that simply can't lay down roots.

Timeline

Timeline:
* 1997: Born to Vicki Landry and Sam Blain, both heroin addicts, in New York City. His eyes - bright blue and swirling with shadows, along with the swirling lines of darkness beneath his skin immediately marked him as a mutant.

* 2006: Jaxon fears for his life when one of his parents' dealers come calling for a debt not paid. His powers first manifest at the tender age of nine. He doesn't return home and is soon found on the streets by a 'kind' stranger who's intentions were anything but kind. Three days later and he's sold to Stryker for a pretty penny.

* 2006 - 2017: He spends the years being trained by Stryker. Smart enough to know that Jaxon was valuable and an easy flight risk, Stryker added just enough affection peppered into the grueling training and abuse, to appeal to the forgotten child of parents who never really took care of him. His powers honed, combat skills drilled into him, missions carried out and always striving to do his very best to make Stryker proud, no matter what - Jaxon was the picture of Stockholm Syndrome.

* 2018: Stryker asks too much of Jaxon - the assassination of a mutant right's activist. He refuses and finally breaks free. He settles down in Bushwick, blending in with others like himself, always looking over his shoulder, always afraid the man that raised him will come looking. To this day, he puts his skills to use as a protector of those weaker than him and a thief - robbing from the rich and giving to the downtrodden of Bushwick.

Personality

Distrustful:
People that were supposed to care about him have always let him down. This constant let-down has led to Jaxon having a difficult time trusting anyone that claims to want to help. This mistrust goes a step further when it comes to non-mutants. He keeps other mutants at arm's length emotionally, but he keeps non-mutants a mile away in almost every regard.

Fakes It To Make It:
Deep down, Jaxon is really still just a scared and confused man. He's afraid of being found, he's afraid of losing himself, he's afraid of getting close to people. But outwardly, that's a different story. He always puts on a smile, he's friendly on the surface level, he laughs, he jokes and he's almost disarmingly charming. Never let them smell your fear or sense your weakness.

Hopeful:
Despite everything he's been through, despite his own inability to be open and to trust, Jaxon remains hopeful. He has hope for a better future where mutants are seen as equals and not monsters. He has hope that one day he might stumble across someone that he can truly and completely trust. He has hope for the dawn that follows all the darkness.

Powers

Healing:
While Jaxon can't heal more quickly than an average person, he can heal himself without medical intervention as long as his wounds are bound so he isn't continually losing his own dark energy. To do so, he has to be in a dark room and draw the shadows into himself. He can't heal himself if he's trapped in the light.

Night Vision:
Jaxon is a man that lives in the shadows, almost literally. He's capable of seeing as well in his dark world as he is in the light.

Shadow Constructs:
With a little effort, Jaxon can make solid constructs out of shadows. He can only create small items - a medium sized rock, a large knife - typically nothing larger than a breadbox. The only exception to this rule is shields. He can form a shield from shadows that can protect up to two people from attacks. These shields are enough to stop small caliber bullets. They can be completely defeated by light based attacks. All of the items Jaxon can create are inky black, they look like they're made from shadows. He can't create anything that looks 'real' - unless maybe we're talking about an onyx.

Shadow Form:
While still semi-tangible, Jaxon can take on a shadow form. In this form, he's nothing but inky blackness. Passing a hand through him would feel like passing a hand through water in regards to resistance. Damage taken in this form would be approximately half of what it would be if he was in his solid form.

Shadow Manipulation:
If there are shadows in the room, Jaxon can manipulate them. He can turn them into shapes, he can make them larger or smaller. It's really more of a fun trick and a way to cheat at 'shadow puppets' but throwing a room into near complete darkness by growing a shadow could come in useful.

Shadow Travel:
Jaxon can travel through shadows. This isn't like teleportation, although over short distances it may seem that way. He can, for example, be on one side of a room one moment and on the other in a blink - so long as both sides contain shadows. He cannot travel over great distances in an instant. His range from one shadow to the next is about fifty feet. This doesn't mean he can't make it from point A to Point B that's much further away, it's just not instantaneous. He needs to 'shadow hop', moving from one dark corner to another, and so on, before he reaches his destination.

Skills

Acrobatics:
His training in acrobatics had more to do with defensive combat than anything else. It ensured that, if caught in the light, Jaxon could potentially climb, jump or gracefully roll his way to the nearest shadow.

Bladed Weapons:
Due to his ability to create small bladed weapons, fighting with them was an aspect of Jaxon's training. This doesn't extend to giant swords, only to weapons the size of the shadow constructs he can create.

Hand To Hand:
Jaxon was taught extensively in hand-to-hand combat, but not in the typical fashion. He wasn't taught any sort of formal martial arts. Instead his combat training focused on using his powers to his advantage in a fight, in anticipating an opponent's moves and literally be 'one step' ahead of them.

Multi-Lingual:
French, Russian, Latin and Mandarin - Jaxon's training and education didn't stop with combat and shadow manipulation. He's fluent in these languages.

Opera:
He certainly doesn't look the type, but Jaxon is an accomplished Opera singer. He can hit ranges from tenor to bass-baritone. Of course this means that singing in general is something he can do well.

Security Systems:
Jaxon's training included different ways to disarm security systems. Afterall, it does no good if he's the only one that can get inside.

Stealth:
Beyond his power's, Jaxon is an expert when it comes to sneaking about. He can be as quiet as a mouse, his footsteps light as a gazelle's.

Violin:
Jaxon could be a concert violinist. This, along with Opera, were the two pleasures he was allowed. He had the finest teachers in both and spent nearly all of his free time practicing.

Resources

Apartment:
It's dingy, it's small, it's dark but it's his. Jaxon rents a small apartment in Bushwick on the cheap.

Cash On Hand:
Jaxon lives a very frugal existence, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have money. He has the stuff stashed in different places all over the city. They're his 'getaway' stashes should Stryker's men come knocking and he has to leave down in a hurry. All together, he likely has about twenty-thousand out there - all of it stashed back from his thievery.

Motorcycle:
It's nothing fancy, it's not a Harley or a Ducati, but Jaxon's Kawasaki Z650 gets him from A to B.

Weaknesses

Forever Night:
Unless he wants to be a permanent shadow, Jaxon can't stay too long in his shadow form. Due to his mutant physiology, staying that way for longer than an hour is a risk.

Light Sensitivity:
Jaxon is almost literally made of shadows. Light is his number one weakness. Being under bright lights - from sun to incandescent - too long drains his dark energy. Bright light is blinding to him. If kept away from shade and shadows for too long, he can be rendered unconscious. He is particularly vulnerable to light based attacks.

Mutant Physiology:
Jaxon doesn't have a normal circulatory system, his life essence isn't blood. It's shadows that make his heart beat. He can't heal if kept in the light. He can't see a regular doctor because there's nothing 'regular' about his body.

Obvious Mutation:
Jaxon's eyes, while blue, are constantly swirling with shadows. The effect is that of a blue moon with dark clouds drifting over it. Shadows also shift and swirl in intricate patterns beneath his skin - lines, circles, spirals. These swirling shadows almost look like dancing tribal tattoos.

Power Limitations:
If a room is completely dark or so bright that it's completely void of shadows, Jaxon's powers - other than his Night Vision - are useless. There has to be shadows, that line between dark and light, for him to use anything else.

Title Date Scene Summary
There's A Monster Inside Me May 28th, 2024 Jaxon finds Polaris meditating in the Asteroid's gardens and tells her about his encounter with hyperadaptive Wild Sentinels in Astoria. An off-hand request to investigate the scene of the crime leads him to admit how badly Stryker damaged him, which leads Lorna to assure him that he's safe, now.
Social Studies Workshop: The New Human Is Illegal May 26th, 2024 Presentations from J'onn J'onnz, Jaxon Blain, Mystique, Mary Seward, Scott Summers, and Bishop; and comments from Natasha Romanova and Sally Pride all serve to help educate all present on just a few of the many perspectives on the violent history of Mutantkind, and how - if at all - a path forward might be forged for them-- and, indeed, ALL of humanity:

J'onn discusses the death of the Martian race, consumed by hatred between parallel subspecies; Jaxon gets lots of attention for sharing his dark past with William Stryker and illuminating the ways in which people of all kinds fail one another; Mystique demonstrates why she's one of Mutantkind's oldest, hardest voices by pledging to spend the rest of her long life fighting for it; Mary shows why she's the Queen of Blood, and shares the vampiric perspective on coexistence; Scott Summers puts a lifetime of PowerPoint expertise on display by laying out the cold, hard stats animating the bloody history of Humans and Mutants; Bishop reveals his past in one of our futures to stress the importance of coming together before the nightmares come to fruition; Sally reminded everyone that all people have /some/ things in common, while Natasha's cold cynicism shines through her insistence that tribal isolation and self-interest are the natural state of humanity. Madelyne gets a peek into a relatively quiet moment inside of her new community, Talia reflects on the twisting possibilities she's lived through and the way that war touches all of them, Camille studies passionately then swears to take Stryker's eyes one day, Rogue keeps rowdy Institute students in check, and Micola shares a brief moment with her sister-in-law.

Also, there are snacks.

John Cumberland continues not to exist.

A Tour of Asteroid M May 22nd, 2024 After freeing five mutants from Purifiers, Mystique gives Jaxon a tour of the Asteroid base, and gets him settled into a guest room... he might stay, he likely won't.
Stealing Otters May 21st, 2024 Some gang bangers though to rob The New York Marine Research Institute for otters to breed and sell, there was no way they could expect a man of pure shadow, a sword wielding heroine, and a talking Essipus.
JUST Trouble May 18th, 2024 After a brief but vicious fight, a group of mutants manage to drive off a unit of Purifiers armed to the teeth with bizarre, high-tech weaponry seemingly tailor made to counteract them at every turn! With captives in the hands of both the X-Men and the Brotherhood, and Jaxon Blain trailing this new manifestation of his life's great shame, who will stop them before they claim more lives?
Mutants and Master Molds - Investigation Interruptus May 16th, 2024 The search group from Xavier's files out and tracks down a Sentinel camp. With help from their fellow heroes in the neighborhood, they break in and find the things of nightmares, of Sentinels. Of Master Molds.
Not a Team Player. May 14th, 2024 Jaxon gets to take out some of his anger at Stryker and the Purifiers on some hapless goons with the help of Mystique. Offers are made, at least one accepted - the rest remains to be seen.
