The Lazarus Pits, more commonly referred to as 'Fountains of Youth' are a very rare naturally occuring phenomena that have been the subject of myth since the 5th century, in the works of Herodotus. They have been utilized for centuries by those with the resources and know-how to harness their power to restore vigor to the aged and even the dead.

The first "successful" use of a Lazarus Pit was in the Arabian Peninsula in 1462, by an alchemist and physician who would later be known as Ra's al Ghul. He promised he could resurrect the dead son of Sultan Mehmed II, fallen during the battle at Targoviste. What returned to life was a deranged and howling ghoul who fed on human marrow. Ra's escaped the Ottoman Empire bare steps ahead of the executioner's axe.

Ra's had all mentions of the Pits meticulously removed from written history, in large part due to the fact that the Lazarus Pits are a non-renewable, ultimately finite resource. He then founded the League of Assassins in part to maintain this goal and to see to the defense of the Pits for all time.

The most commonly known Pit was "discovered" in modern day St. Augustine, Florida during the 16th century by the conquistador Juan Ponce de León. This Pit had long been drained of its viability by the time Spanish settlers arrived en masse.

(OOC Note: The Pits are a very closely-guarded secret. Please RP this fact accordingly.)
