Personality

Architect:
Lei Ling is a proponent of the Shanghai school of architecture and runs her own firm Sacred Tree Design Studio. She specializes in large-scale residential, commercial, and memorial architecture. The Shanghai school can be summarized as:
* Form is expressed through mastery of materials and breaking through their natural limitations. Lines should be smoothly curved, not straight. Planes should not be parallel or perpendicular to each other.
* Beauty is expressed through the interaction of light and the change of perspective with position. Exteriors should be well-lit to highlight forms and also be its own constantly-changing display. Interiors should be lit indirectly and softly, with lighting structures recessed and hidden. Natural light should be piped in wherever possible, but should be constrained so as not to be a flood.
* Function cannot be separated from the structure's environment and the same design language must be carried into functional spaces such as HVAC openings and water closets. The hub-and-spoke model of pedestrian transit should be avoided. Instead, the grand-circle model of transit should be used in order to break sightlines where undesired and make every walk a pleasant journey.

Face:
Face is respect, honor, and dignity; it is something extremely precious and one must be mindful of it at all times. It is summarized as:
* There is a hidden social structure in all situations, a ranking by face. It is crucial to understand the pecking order and interact according to it.
* The higher-ranked have the responsibility to protect and care for the lower-ranked. The lower-ranked have the responsibility to defer to the decisions and directions of the higher-ranked. For example, the highest-ranked should always pay for everyone's meals and the lower-ranked should defer to the payer's decision of where to eat.
* One gains face through others expressing deference. One loses face through making public mistakes or displays of incompetence. Face is not transferable, but some can diffuse through having a relationship with someone with much face.

Only Child:
Pursuant to the One Child Policy, Lei Ling has no siblings and was subject to the full attention and expectations of her parents as well as the nationally hyper-competitive academic environment. Her upbringing can be summarized as:
* There is no such thing as good enough. There is only the winner and then everyone else. One should never be satisfied with performing at less than perfect.
* The dreams of the parents are the dreams of the child, because the child owes their existence to the parents and is the only vehicle for their legacy.
* Success can only be a result of your own efforts and ability. While hired help is a perfectly legitimate resource to utilize, to ask for help is to admit weakness and failure.

Shanghai:
Lei Ling lives in, designs for, and defends Shanghai. She embraces the locally popular perception that Shanghai is the greatest city in the world; if she praises some other city, it's because she's being polite. The key points can be summarized as:
* There is ordered and peaceful living both socially and criminally. There are no "unsafe districts" within the city, and everyone who lives here are happy and prosperous.
* Shanghai has the most quantity of the most modern styles and largest buildings, as well as the best infrastructure for transportation, utilities, and green spaces.
* Shanghai has the best education and commercial institutions in the nation and therefore everyone wants to live here over anywhere else. If somewhere else is recognized as better for something - that's just a matter of time until Shanghai surpasses them.

Powers

Aerokinesis:
Lei Ling can exert kinesis of the air. The power maximums are ~20 psi dynamic and static pressure equivalent across up to ~0.1 cubic kilometers. Fine control resolution is down to ~1 millimeter. The kinesis can be used to remove energy from air as well, stilling winds and nullifying air-conducted sounds. She can maintain maximum output for ~5 minutes before physically tiring.

A common application of air manipulation for Lei Ling is flight via a mobile air envelope. This flight is high subsonic and sustained through static lift. Altitude maximums are limited by thermal constraints, not pressure.

Air Constructs:
Lei Ling is able to solidify air into objects, with shapes dictated by imagination and focus. Solid air objects are able to move and change shape through aerokinesis. They can be controlled out to ~2 km, but provide little sensory feedback on their own - they can't be used as visual or olfactory scouts. Air constructs have correct shapes but are not materially stronger than low-carbon steel.

The most complex application of air constructs is the formulation of avatar copies of herself, which can act as useful clones. Lei Ling is able to manage up to two avatars simultaneously while still moving and acting on her own.

Air Sense:
Lei Ling has tactile and acoustic sensation through air mediums. This ability has a reflexive use range of ~5 meters. This ability has a focused use range of ~30 kilometers. Sensed objects must have an thread-width path via air back to Lei Ling; the path can be contorted. Spatial resolution is ~100 microns. Time resolution is up to 20 kilohertz. This ability is passive sensing and has no overtly detectable signature.

Skills

Architecture:
Lei Ling understands structural architecture and fundamental civil engineering. She can competently speak on:
* Siting, transit, landscaping, and urban planning
* Structural analysis including live and dead load transfers - and weaknesses of buildings
* Building machinery such as HVAC, electrical, water, heating, service access, and security
* Psychoartistic analysis of forms, perspectives, and lighting in compositions
* Comfort design of structures such as acoustics, feng shui, thermal, and sightlines

Polyglot:
Lei Ling speaks the following languages:
* Mandarin Chinese with native fluency
* Shanghainese with native fluency
* English with professional working proficiency
* Japanese with professional working proficiency
* Cantonese with limited proficiency
* Korean with elementary proficiency

Sacred Tree Design Studio:
Lei Ling started and heads Sacred Tree Design Studio, an architectural design firm with offices in Shanghai. It has ~25 employees and mainly takes contracts from private developers for large residential and commercial structures.

Weaknesses

Click to expand.

Alone At the Top:
Lei Ling finds it extremely difficult to ask for help, and typically the thought never crosses her mind. This is because:
* To ask for help is to bother and burden someone else, which is to be avoided as it is impolite.
* To ask for help is an admission of weakness and inability, with commensurate loss of face, which is to be avoided.
* To ask for help hinders one's own internal growth by relying on external crutches, which is to be avoided.

Inefficiency:
Aero has two settings: minimal and maximal. She does not know to scale her efforts to match the challenge and typically overdoes everything. As a result, she has poor endurance when in combat and can easily produce significant collateral impacts.
