Thanos was a 'Divergent' Homo Immortalis, an evolutionary wildcard and an unexpected product of Celestial breeding programs. He was born on Saturn's moon of Titan and dwelt in their colony of Titanos for thousands of years. Thanos was exiled from his home for high crimes and atrocities. He returned at the head of an army and virtually annihilated his existing relatives. Only a hundred Eternals survived before Thanos' army was routed.

Of the bounty of the universe, Thanos sought only two things: absolute dominion over all life and the affections of Death. He engaged in warfare and cunning political schemes that spanned millennia. If a particularly potent item he desired was held too closely by some foreign agent or species, Thanos would simply bide his time until they inevitably died or collapsed under their own weight. In time he amassed a mighty army of sycophantic followers and potent subordinates.

Thanos' attempts to subvert the Demiurge were compromised frequently by Earth's allies. It was he who contacted the Celestials and implored them to visit Earth and witness the awesome power of the Demiurge.

The arrival of the Celestials led to a schism among the Eternals. Some wanted to aid their masters; others to abstain in neutrality. Others wanted to defend humanity and the sentience of the Demiurge. Thanos recruited many Divergents to his cause and spread carnage in every realm possible. When the Demiurge's counterstroke destroyed the invasion force, Thanos' access to the Power Cosmic was burned out of him. Whatever auras or powers he had before, he could never channel the cosmic life force again.

Thanos turned to military conquest. He frequently clashed with the Skrulls, Kree, Oa, and other spacefaring civilizations. He contributed to the rise of the Citadel and the collapse of the Tamaranean Empire.
