Date of Scene: 30 December 2022
Location: Fred's Diner
Synopsis: Pietro and Tommy meet up to share a speedster-sized lunch ahead of the former's wedding ceremony. Nobody wants a growling stomach to interrupt the vows.
Cast of Characters: Tommy Shepherd, Pietro Maximoff

Tommy Shepherd has posed:
Weddings are not Tommy's forte. Neither of his parents remarried after they got divorced (well, as far as he knows) and he's too young for any of his friends group to be getting hitched just yet, but what Tommy does know, is... speed. Something he and Pietro share intimate knowledge of, that's for sure. And maybe that's all they have in common besides their signature looks, but it's familiar enough that he's willing to go out on a limb here.

Specifically, the limb of the tree that's all about the speed of their metabolism. So Tommy texts a "hey, you hungry?" and a Map link, and then he waits.

Because, either way, he's going to eat something. If Pietro wants to accompany, that's his choice.

Tommy's at one of the back booths tucked into the corner, which means he has line of sight on the exits. It's half juvie-paranoia and half-anxious-waiting, even though he's only just sat down. He's still in his big puffy coat, though his baseball cap has already been turned around, which is sort of the same idea as setting one's Crocs into sports mode. Not that Tommy owns any Crocs. Anyway. He thumbs through notifications on his phone without actually looking at them, meaning he swipes away several texts from his twin. Whoops.

Pietro Maximoff has posed:
It's not a long wait, by standard people's perceptions. For Pietro and Tommy, seconds stretch like an eternity at times. The response to Tommy's text arrives a moment before Pietro does - a simple "OMW." Food was almost always on Pietro's mind - metabolism being what it is, and all.

Entering the diner, Pietro finds Tommy almost immediately - something about perception and being able to do a scan of the room in less than a breath's time. "Hey there, Tommy." The elder speedster comments, even as he's seated across from the younger. "Thank you for the invitation. How have you been?"

Tommy is likely the only person in the restaraunt to watch Pietro as if he were in real time - seeing him collect up the menu, make a selection, then set it down again.

Tommy Shepherd has posed:
This place is no Mootant Town Milkshakes, but Tommy still has more than a passing familiarity with the menu. So he doesn't have to reference it himself, either before Pietro arrives or once he's sat down; all he says is, "The meatloaf sandwich slaps, if you're into non-specific meat blocks in possibly a tomato-based sauce."

Tommy is. He's super into it.

And in the same way that he experiences Pietro's quick selection in real time, Pietro too gets to see Tommy's idiosyncracies in real-time, things that happen at super-speed and thus mostly missed by everyone else: the way he scans his surroundings habitually, the tightening of his eyes in response to loud noises -- a car horn outside, some uproarious laughter from someone several booths down, the clank of pots and pans from the back as the dish washer starts to load up the sink.

He fidgets more than most people think, too. Mostly with his phone. Because he's a 20 year old so of course he does.

"I'm good. Worried about--well. Thanks for the invite to the wedding, I just don't want to screw it up for you. Promise to be on my best behavior." He's nervous enough about it that his talking speed starts to edge towards the superhuman before he reigns himself in, and Tommy's aware enough of it that he rubs the back of his neck. "Sorry. You're the one who should be freaking out, not me. I mean. Are you freaking out? If not, that's cool. Can't imagine not freaking out, though."

Pietro Maximoff has posed:
"I'll try your suggestion." Among other things, of course. He usually will try to order two meals just to keep those calories from vanishing like a whisper in the wind. "Usually I am at Mootant Town, truth be told. This might be one of my first times actually eating here."

Those habits and tells are noted, and mirrored to some extent. If Tommy is nervous about something coming, it's best to keep an eye out as well! And so, Pietro does scan the diner as well - checking exits, odd behaviours. He's not startled by the sounds of the city, thankfully. "Something we should be worried about?" He asks after a breath.

A wry grin as he regards the younger man. "Worried about what, Tommy?" He wonders, placing a napkin on his lap to avoid any spills... that likely have no chance of occuring. Manners are habit to him, at least. "I don't presume you are going to cause trouble, of course." Pietro tries to offer over to assure his conversation partner. "I am... nervous, yes. It is a big step in anyone's life, let alone someone with our perceptions. I am committing to spending my time with her - time that stretches on forever." A glance around. "I just hope I am good enough for her, and that I treat her as she deserves." The man shakes his head. "Honestly, I think that is a concern for anyone..."

Tommy Shepherd has posed:
Tommy nods. "It's the best thing they make here," he says, and he's tried it all. Which, for a diner, is pretty impressive. It's not a tiny menu.

He cracks a smile at the mention of the milkshake bar nearby, even as his eyes are drawn to the inward swing of the door as a couple arrive and are greeted by one of the waitresses. His attention is back on Pietro soon after. "Yeah, same. I worked there for a little bit, and do some side gigs for Coz every once in a while. It's a good place. Real community center sort of thing, like you see in old movies and shi--stuff."

The next question is posed mid-scan, so Tommy breaks off halfway through looking around to glance back at Pietro. "Uh, nope. You know, besides the standard stuff you should be worried about at a wedding. Clothing malfunctions, mother-in-laws who arrive in all white, bad song choices for the reception dance party," he answers as he drums his fingers on the table-top. "Okay, I've never been to a wedding, so I don't actually know."

That's all from pop culture, then. Or maybe just a few weird corners of the internet where they tell wedding-related horror stories. Tommy goes down a lot of rabbit holes on account of all the spare time he has in-between doing things at superspeed.

"That's... a lot," is all he says at the end, and it all comes out on a big sigh, having held his breath through Pietro's explanation. "Uh, good luck?" The waitress comes by to drop off waters (apparently Tommy had ordered that much ahead of time) so he dutifully holds his glass up in a quick toast to accompany said good luck wishing.

Pietro Maximoff has posed:
Pietro gives a rare genuine smile. "I recall meeting Micola there for food a few times. Good memories." The glass is raised in response to the toast. "To good luck." A sip of the water is taken, before he looks to the waitress. "May I please have the meatloaf plate, as well as a bacon cheesburger, a Coke and a chocolate milkshake?" His order completed, he looks to Tommy. Once both have ordered, the waitress departs, shaking her head at the size of the orders.

"Lorna is a fan of the milkshakes there, as I recall." A slight smirk at that. "As for those worries - the clothing was designed by Janet. If something goes amiss with that, I am sure she will have planned it or have an immediate solution. My soon to be mother-in-law is all too happy to dress in our chosen colors, so that's not an issue." His own hands move to lace his own fingers and rest on the table. "And at a party, most songs will do. Just a matter of people enjoying themselves - which is what we want."

"Thank you for the luck..." A nod. "I suspect Wanda will be in attendance tonight, as well. There seem to be quite a few notables who are coming to celebrate."

Tommy Shepherd has posed:
The meatloaf part is the only similarity in their orders. Tommy veers off into breakfast (rejoice in the wonders of all-day breakfast) for a full Lumberjack Slam-style plate, plus pancakes, and orange juice. With a side of chili cheese fries. It's truly a smorgasbord, and one the waitress definitely isn't thrilled about having to carry out to them when it's all done.

"Must run in the family," Tommy jokes, only to wince slightly because... well. Awkward topic. He fiddles with his phone a while longer before nodding. "Yeahhh, probably like half the Avengers or something, right? Guess we'll all be super safe, at least." There's a grin on his face as he knocks on the table, which probably isn't even made of real wood, but it gets the idea across anyway.

He doesn't react to mention of Wanda at all, and for someone as flinchy as he is, that's a tell in and of itself.

Pietro Maximoff has posed:
A chuckle from Pietro. "Indeed." He comments, guessing Tommy was referring to the food intake. "Well, at least among the quicker of our family. I don't recall seeing Lorna or Wanda taking in as much as we tend to." A smirk. "Likely due to the difference in caloric needs."

"Indeed. Avengers, Brotherhood, other Mutants, the Genoshan guard..." He counts off on his fingers. "I would not want to be the fool who attempts to disrupt the wedding, or cause trouble for any of our guests." That last was clearly pointed at Tommy's ongoing situation. "We'll all be safe, and enjoy a lovely celebration and ring in the New Year."

Tommy Shepherd has posed:
To some degree, that seems to put Tommy at ease. While at the same time his anxiety grows for an entirely different reason, because that's a whole lot of people he could potentially commit some sort of wedding faux pas in front of. Hoighty toighty socialite is not something Tommy is anywhere near capable of pretending to be. So he guzzles down his water in a few gulps, and smiles apologetically at the waitress who is forced to come over to top it up.

"Yeah. Sounds like it'll be a real good time." Pause. "So long as I don't spill anything on the tux I rented."

If Tommy's looking a little green for a while, don't worry. By the time the food gets here, he'll be over it. No speedster in their right mind would let food go to waste like that.
