- Strix has posed:
It's a bit nippy outside, but thankfully not too cold. It's enough to slow Mary down a little bit, which is why she can be found here in the coffeeshop. Get some of that sweet sweet hot coffee into you. Or, for Mary, sweet sweet Mexican hot chocolate. And a pastry. Maybe two. Okay. Three pastries.
She can be found in one of the tables that faces a window, dressed warmly in fuzzy boots, jeans, and one of those poofy fur lined jackets. It may be a bit much for the weather for other people, but Mary feels the chill more than what most other people do.
On the table is her Waynetech tablet to one side, and a pad of paper with a pencil in front of her and some sheets of homework. She's got a book open, the diary of Anne Frank, and is occasionally taking notes while she reads.

The door opens to admit Stephanie, a blond coed wearing a leather jacket and blue jeans, with brown boots. A bookbag is slung over one shoulder. She pulls off some gloves and stows them in the bookbag, Stephanie taking a moment to look about the room as she does.
Her eyes go quickly from table to table, though pause a moment when she sees Strix. It's been quite awhile since Stephanie helped the other Bats with her departure from the Court of Owls.
She heads over to the counter to get a hot latte and a chocolate croissant, and then makes her way over to Strix's table. "Hey Mary," she says warming, giving a little wave. "Ok if I join you?"
- Strix has posed:
Mary looks up at the sound of a familiar voice, and grins when she sees that it's Steph. She gives her a little wave, and when asked if she minds being joined, she shakes her head and gestures at one of the chairs, inviting Steph to sit.
<<Hi!>> she signs. <<How are you? I haven't seen you in a long time.>> She keeps her signing simple and slow, to make sure that Steph can keep up. She slides the plate that's piled with pastries towards her. <<Want one?>>
- Stephanie Brown has posed:
Stephanie Brown settles into the seat, pulling her jacket off and sliding it over the back of her chair. Beneath she's wearing a white sweater with blue and silver decoration that gives it a slightly wintery feel.
Settled in the seat, she watches Mary's hands, and then visibly stops to think as if remembering the signs which she is still far from mastering. "I'm good," Stephanie replies, speaking more slowly as her attention is more on her signing the words as she speaks them. "Stopped for food," she says.
The offered pastry gets a smile from Stephanie and she nods. She slides over her chocolate croissant too. "Can have half if you want," Stephanie says, managing to sign 'half' and that she's offering it.
- Strix has posed:
<<A trade, then,>> Mary signs, with a grin. <<Half of this for half of that.>> She indicates one of her apple turnovers as part of the trade.
<<Have you read this?>> she asks, holding up the book. <<I'm learning...>> she scowls as she can't really figure out how to keep the conversation simple enough, so she pulls out her phone. "I'm learning about Anne Frank and World War 2," the tinny voice of the text-to-speech app she uses to communicate with those who haven't learned ASL pipes up. She also makes sure to sign what she said, too, to help.
"I was only 7 when Pearl Harbor happened, and only sort of knew what was going on," her text-to-speech says. "Hitler was bad, and was trying to take over the world. The basics. I never learned of the Holocaust until this course."
- Stephanie Brown has posed:
Stephanie Brown nods to the exchange of pastries, taking a knife and cutting both of them, then taking half of the apple one to nibble on as they talk. "Oh yes, that's a pretty famous book. Read that when I was younger for a class," Stephanie says with a quick nod of her head. "Really sad but also eye-opening, isn't it? They did such horrible things back then."
Stephanie notices a male student at a nearby table staring over at Mary after having caught her phone saying she was 7 during Pearl Harbor. Stephanie stares back until he notices. "What? She aged well," Stephanie says with a roll of her eyes as if that was obvious, and drawing a chuckle from the guy who turns back to his book he was reading.
She turns back to Strix. Struggling to sign on the topic, but doing what words she can. "Yeah, it was really a dark time for humanity," she says, shaking her head.
- Strix has posed:
Mary catches the guy staring at her, and she sticks her tongue out at him and gives him a grin, as she takes the half of the chocolate croissant handed to her. She takes a bite out of it and closes her eyes, signing, <<Yummy!>> with one hand.
<<I'm learning a lot,>> she signs. <<So much has happened since I joined the Court. I was kept frozen most of the time. They only woke me up to kill people or to learn new technology.>> Her eyes light up as she adds, <<I can vote now, too!>>
- Stephanie Brown has posed:
Stephanie Brown lets out a sigh. Signing the words at the same time, she says, "It's good to be able to. And you should. The choices are often unpleasant though. Except for Harvey Dent. He's a good one," she says with a smile for Gotham's straight-arrow District Attorney.
The half of apple pastry is gradually consumed. "So what classes are you taking?" she asks, setting down the final bite to sign the words, and then pick the food back up to finish it off. "I'm studying to become a forensic scientist. Someone who evaluates crime scenes," she says.
- Strix has posed:
<<I will!>> Mary signs enthusiastically. <<I will have to think about everything very carefully,>> she says, turning serious. <<Make smart choices.>>
She tilts her head curiously at Stephanie's choice of profession. <<Don't you do that already?>> she asks after looking around to make sure that people aren't listening in. Or watching in, as the case may be. <<So you want to do that during the day, too?>>
- Stephanie Brown has posed:
"Have to get paid for something!" Stephanie says with a grin and a soft laugh. She pauses a moment. "I mean, I probably don't with how things are with Dick. But I can still do a lot to help people that way. There's access to things that can go hand in hand with other methods," she says. "Dick is a homicide detective after all."
She starts on her own half of her chocolate croissant. "These are so good when they are warmed up and the chocolate is nice and mooshy," she says, not knowing how to sign mooshy. A sip of her warm beverage is taken and Stephanie glances outside at the snow on the ground. "Have you ever been sledding? Or does being out in this bother you too much?"
- Strix has posed:
Mary nods and grins. <<Can't sleep all day, right?>> Her mood turns pensive for a moment. <<I don't know what I want to do. I'm grateful to Tim for providing me a home but...>> She shrugs. <<First things first. Get my GED.>>
She looks thoughtful when Stephanie says "Mooshy." <<Maybe...>> She then combines the sign for 'warm' and 'soft' together. She grins, <<I think that works.>>
<<When I was a kid, I did,>> she signs. <<It was a lot of fun! But I think I'd be too sleepy to enjoy it if it was too cold outside. Maybe if I get some of those warm packs and put them inside my jacket...>> she muses.
Then her phone goes off, tinkling at her with its alarm. She looks at it and her eyes go wide. <<Oh! I have to get to class!>> She quickly drains the rest of her hot cocoa and grabs a couple of napkins to wrap up her other pastries to go. <<It was good seeing you again!>>
- Stephanie Brown has posed:
Stephanie Brown looks thoughtful at the mention of warm packs to try try to keep Strix warm enough. "Enjoy class!" she says, and signs, giving a quick wave and a friendly smile to her. "I need to head back to the chemistry building myself in a little bit," Stephanie says, picking up the pace on drinking her latte since it isn't in a to go cup. "Look forward to talking later," she says, before rising and getting back into her jacket and gloves to head out as well.
