Cast of Characters: | Olivia Gaudin, Bruce Banner
|
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
Friday night is always an exciting show, but lately the cast of Wicked has really come together. After a bit of an inconsistent start, Olivia has finally truly gotten into her role as Elphaba, also know as the Wicked Witch.
The performance done, it is time for the cast to celebrate backstage. This is a joyous part of the evening, but also one where they get to meet people! For most fans, the best shot is to linger in the lobby and hope for Olivia to do one of her little surprise appearance or to stalk the exit door. For some, though, backstage is no barrier at all. Olivia herself has a standing invite for a list of super heroes so long that security no longer takes her seriously. Basically all of them.
As for Olivia herself, she is in her dressing room. The door is propped open and she is just making a few last checks of her costume. It would not do to lose her wig in front of someone.
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner came by himself and likely went through ordinary channels to get a ticket rather than use his Avengers status to get ahead. He, frankly, would generally rather not be recognized, even if he knows it's inevitable. He wears sunglasses and keeps cap shoved down on his head until he takes his seat.
He enjoys the show - he's actually never seen it, he's rarely had the opportunity, but he's always been a fan of the Wizard of Oz. He can't help but feel a little connection to the misunderstood green monster, even if he doesn't always get along with his own dark side.
After the show, he gets to go backstage, escorted carefully by security and lead back to the green room. He's not the only one, of course, but he makes a point to seek out the blonde lead, offering a hand, "I'm afraid I didn't think to bring flowers, I hope you'll forgive me." he says
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
The green room is a bit of an odd place for Olivia in her makeup. She always feels like she's camouflaged. When she arrives, there is the usual reaction. Lots of friendly faces, a touch more security than she wishes was necesssary, and yes, admittedly, Olivia has a bit of nerves. Ever since the incident with a crazy anti-mutant group shooting up the place, she has been jittery! She also keeps her head more carefully covered for personal reasons.
Those jitters go away, though, when she finds herself face to face with Bruce. She visibly lifts onto her toes for just a moment. It takes all her self control not to react more.
"Mr. Banner, it is a pleasure. I'm Olivia," she offers, her hand held out. "And please, the flowers are less important than meeting someone as distinguished as you are." She resists the urge to start reciting all she has read about him. He knows what Ph.Ds he has.
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner smiles, "Dr. Banner," he corrects lightly. "I didn't got to superhero graduate school for nothing," he says lightly.
He's dressed simply enough, in a tie and jacket, with a green pocket square. "It's nice to meet you, Olivia. A wonderful performance, from everyone involved. I'm intrigued by the idea of revisiting familiar stories and tropes. Seeing things through different points of view can be a gift," he says.
"I don't get to the theater much, but I'm glad I did tonight."
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
Olivia, caught like this! All that knowledge ruined in a moment of excitement. For all of a couple heartbeats she is mortified at her mistake. But she did not get this far by falling down. It was the picking herself up part that mattered.
"My apologies, Dr. Banner! How about I make up for it by letting you buy me dinner?" She has a cheeky grin that shows how very clever she thinks that was. But it was worth a shot.
"I love how the show takes a woman out of the confines of her villainy and shows that she was more than a scary witch after all." She pauses to pick her words, "It did take some getting used to the role, though. The first few times I was waiting off stage and listening to people happily sing about my death got into my head more than a little."
She waves politely to a few familiar faces, but her attention snaps back to Dr. Banner immediately. "Would you like a tour? Or a drink?"
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner blinks in surprise. He's a bachelor, yes, but he's used to standing next to Steve Rogers and Tony Stark and Thor. He's not exactly the team heartthrob. Not to mention being a wee bit older.
But he's not an idiot.
"I would be...I would be very happy to offer you dinner. There are a few late night places, even, we could get into after the theater. If you were interested, of course."
"Drinking is unwise for me. I occasionally use canniboids, mostly for purposes as a relaxer, but alcohol can lead to volatility. I can't afford volatility."
He says it softly, but he also always wants to remind people of what he is. There is always a monster lurking within Bruce Banner. "A tour would be nice. I've never been backstage at a theater before. I wasn't exactly drama club material in high school."
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
Olivia can understand being next to more attractive people. It's Broadway. She is pretty, but the competition tends to outpace her.
"I am certainly interested," she replies. "Oh, and yes, of course. That makes perfect sense. I could see how drinking would be a serious problem." She has a lot of questions, but some are too personal and others, well... the night is young.
"A tour it is, then, Dr. Banner! And backstage here is quite special. We'll start with the murals."
And the murals are a rather spectacular and unique part of the backstage. "Sorry, it does take a bit of walking to see it all, but it is pretty wonderful." This tour goes to the two main internal staircases backstage. "The murals were actually created by Eddie Pendergraft, a very long term performer as Boq." The scenes he captured are not only from Wicked, but also from The Wizard of Oz.
"It is a really special thing I am part of. My father took me to the musical when I was still pretty small. I fell in love so quickly. To think that I get to contribute to the show myself is a dream come true."
She pauses to look at Bruce. "I am curious. Did you always know what you wanted to do with your life? I won't pretend I understand all the research you have done, but even someone as ignorant of the sciences as this theatre girl is, it is obvious you have had an enormous impact."
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner walks alongside, his hands in the pockets of his trousers. At some point, the jacket comes off, draped lightly over his shoulder. He's not a small man - people assume he's shorter than he is, likely just because everyone else on the team is so damn tall.
"Took you to this musical when you were very small? My, you are young," he says. He might feel a little guilty at flirting with a woman so much his junior but, again, he's not foolish enough to let such concerns stand in the way of the charming girl leading him around.
"I always knew it was science. I loved science, from the moment I found it. It was the only thing I had in common with my father," he says softly. "Physics grasped me as a teenager, sitting in class. So orderly, mathematical, logical. Cause and effect, measured and defined. The secret language of the universe," he says.
"I wish I got to do it more. My work as an Avenger is important. But it was never what I wanted."
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
Olivia listens closely. The fangirl bit is wearing off. Conversation and humanity build real connection. Squeeing like a fool over someone does not.
"Does it really help make sense of it all?" she asks. "I mean all of this," at which point she gestures vaguely to the world at large. "I would truly appreciate that kind of understanding. There have been some very confusing things happening in my life as of late."
The tour is getting to things that are more functional than all that fascinating. Olivia has to stop and give up her wig, for one. This leaves her green and blonde. Her hat is taken in for a cleaning, too. She fusses with her hair a bit, taking pains to not reveal the blowhole that she has unfortunately developed as of late. It might work. Everyone else pretends not to notice in a way that might draw attention more than cover up the oddity.
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner cocks his head, "I can't help but imagine Hulk as a blonde now. I wonder, if I bleached my hair, would his remain blonde, or would the regenerative process purge the chemical burn? I could attempt to make something more intensive to counteract - but then I'd be fighting my own regeneration, more or less inventing ways that would be easier to hurt me. Not exactly in my best interest. But maybe in the best interest of the world. In case I ever lost control," he says.
He makes a weak smile, "What a casanova I am. I apologize. You show me this beautiful space for art and I just trauma dump on you. That's what my therapist calls it. It's apparently a defense mechanism in which I show you all the ugly parts of me so you know that I'm not worth your time."
Bruce notices something, if not entirely what. A slight anomaly. But he doesn't linger on it. Everyone has their idiosyncracies. He's certainly not in a fit state to judge anyone. "Do you like Italian? The place I know is kind of a hole in the wall pizza place, but they have really good pasta, too. I found it when I was doing some early lab work while I was in grad school. I spent a couple of semesters here in the city. Actual Italian food, not fast junk."
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
Olivia actually grins as Bruce goes through all of that. She does not say it, but she thinks it was super cute. It's fun watching someone else totally nerd out about something!
"So all of that was just to scare me away, huh? I must be so much stronger than I thought, cause it really was nothing at all." A playful grin, "I got dragged into that Ben Grimm musical. If I can survive showing up to an opening with no director in sight and all in shambles, I think I can manage this. It is very rare for someone like me to realize they are the only adult in a room."
She leads the way on to her dressing room. Other than the mannequins wear her outfits are hung, it is relatively understated. There are flowers here and there, pictures of a young girl (her niece) all over the place, and the rest of her family, too. She does have pictures of heroes hung up in one small section of the wall. Bruce can see himself with his team over there. Not as the Hulk, but just as he is now.
"Italian does sound wonderful. And if it is a bit more lowkey that is great, too." She smiles apologetically. "I will need a moment, though, to de-greenify myself. I am not allowed to go out like this unless on official business."
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner smiles, "Take your time. I've always been a night owl. When I first began to transform, it was diurnal. I hated it. I used to stay up late, talk shows in the background, doing calculations. Maybe the radio on later. Or online - I was part of the first online generation. I spent way too much time in weird newsgroups, drinking too much coffee."
He sounds wistful for it. When he only had the life of the mind. He moves closer to the wall and peers at the picture of himself, curiously. "I have a terrible memory. When was this from?" he asks.
"The place is mostly candle lit. They even have a guy playing the piano. Well, they did. I'll be very put out if they've gone digital. Some things are better analog. The human touch. I didn't used to appreciate it much."
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
"It sounds like you had a lot of fun, exploring a world free of the limits that we tend to just take for granted. I was originally more of a morning person, but that is impossible in this kind of job, so I adapted. Now I tend to stay up late and get up late. I am rarely needed anywhere before the afternoon." Thank goodness.
"Oh, and that was New York. I think shortly after Loki. When you first joined. I was really excited about it. I imagine it was a difficult time, though. And a very difficult situation."
She does work at getting the paint off. It is rather intrusive, really. She comments as she works, "It has to be so hard." Her voice gets softer, "I can understand only a little myself, of what it is like to be admired for being something other than yourself."
After a considerable effort, she is mostly fit for public appearance. Three are nooks (especially her ears) where bits of green are just darn near impossible to get rid of. She also is back in her normal clothes (for that part she has to request a bit of privacy, of course). Tonight that is a form fitting black cocktail dress. It is nice, but understated. She wants to avoid attention, too.
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner offers his arm and will lead her out, following the directions of the tour to go back to whence they came and out the backdoor of the theater. "It's not the far, if you don't mind walking," he says. "I was never much for sports, so walking is generally my favored form of exercise. I do a bit of swimming, but frankly I don't enjoy gymnasiums even to use the pool. The atmosphere is just too reminiscent of certain forms of adolescent torture, unique to locker rooms and athletic spaces. I like scenery and fresh air. The air is fresher now, I think. Reed and Tony keep putting in the work, making the city a better place to live. Quietly."
The neighborhood perhaps gets a little less ideal, but Bruce remains steadfast. Whatever fear may have once lurked in his heart, he'd mostly lost. It's a strange sort of courage, he's found. Most muggers in the city would likely recognize him from the news. He wasn't exactly a secret figure, not anymore. He'd lost that anonymity - but it was a worthwhile deterrent.
Nobody wanted to fight the Hulk.
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
Olivia takes hold of his arm with a bright smile. The way out is so familiar now, but there are still those little things that are always exciting. Passing signatures from former cast. Idina's and Kristen's names on the walls. The legends of her youth, and now she is part of their legacy. Those shoes are a lot for a girl to fill.
"As you might guess, being in public can be a problem. I used to be more outgoing, but recent events have made me wary. Still, I truly doubt I am going to be bothered tonight."
Bruce's comments about the air draw her attention to it. "It is good. Cool, but crisp and fresh. It gives me the impression that nobody has ever had it in their lungs before."
She is always more than a bit of a romantic.
- Bruce Banner has posed:
"I wonder sometimes if it could have atmospheric consequences to literally simply create more fresh air - we're getting closer and closer to raw matter creation, the kind of thing you see in Star Trek. Would put an end to hunger, want, even allow us to clean and replace the atmosphere in a permanent kind of way," he smiles.
"That's the science I fell in love with. But too many keep bending it to bad use and that's when...that's when the Avengers are needed," he says.
"You don't have anything to worry with when you're with me," he says simply. Paparazzi, too, kept their distance from Bruce. He'd hulked up on them once and that had been enough to teach the lesson.
The entrance to the pizzeria is actually below ground, down concrete steps damp with the beginnings of a spitting rain. He offers his hand to steady her step, especially if she happens to be in heels. "Nobody will bother us here," he says. At the door, a young woman offers to take their coats and leads them to a quiet corner booth. The place is lit with candles, including a candelabra atop the modest piano, along with the soft neon gleam of an old fashioned jukebox in another corner. "Red or white wine?"
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
Olivia is curious, and the mention of Star Trek makes her grin. "My brother loves Star Trek, though I fear it leads to debates. My father believes Dr. Who is the pinnacle of science fiction and many a holiday has been filled with a debate that the rest of us simply smile through. However, just being able to make things out of thin air? It sounds amazing. I cannot help but wonder, though, what would humans want if they wanted for nothing?"
Olivia's philosophical question is left to linger for just a moment. She does not want to give Bruce the wrong impression! "I sound so sophisticated there, don't I?" She laughs at herself. "I have read too many stories, I suppose, and I do love reading as much as I can about heroes, which naturally brings, well, villains. And you are right. I am not worried. I feel perfectly safe." Even the anti-mutant crowd isn't stupid enough to barge into this.
"I love that the entrance is below street level," Olivia admits softly. She is in heels, and she gratefully accepts his help.
"It looks so cozy here!" And beautiful. The candles just melt away any stresses she might have been carrying aound. "Oh, red wine, please. I prefer them dry."
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner smiles, "I like the whimsy of Doctor Who, but I'm more of a Trekkie myself. More hard science, less fantasy, although even Trek strains credulity at times. I think it shows a blueprint of the kind of society I'd like to see us become, in time. We're already on the verge of becoming part of the greater galactic society, thanks to the new spaceport."
"Red it is. We'll be a moment in ordering," he says. "The pizza's hard to resist, but the pasta here is incredible. The alfredo is so buttery, it's like velvet," he says.
"I know, it makes the place feel like a secret. I used to have a lot of secrets. Sometimes I wonder if I have any left," he says. The Hulk was his shame, in a way, but the power of that shame had helped to save the world.
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
When Olivia gets settled in, she focuses her attention on the menu. Granted, this is all the kind of delicious food that would get her a lecture, but it also is going to be the best thing she's had in months.
"You are making those dreams real, Dr. Banner. What do you wish for humanity? With all that we are just starting to dive headlong into, it seems the future has never been more open."
Olivia does not overthink the options. "Fetuccini alfredo, then. You have sold me on it. And losing privacy is kind of the price of being someone who makes a huge difference in the world. But in a way, don't you think it can be liberating, too? Secrets are such a burden, sharing them can be a relief." She laughs a little, "Even if I tend not to share mine too quickly. Being what I am is strangely consequential, though I cannot explain why. I am not very strong, I cannot fly, there shall be no mind reading. Other than a few quirks, I am rather, well, boringly normal." She wrinkles her nose and laughs, "With a blowhole, admittedly. But I doubt Captain Rogers or Mr. Stark will be recruiting me anytime soon."
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner leans back in his chair for a moment. He undoes his tie, folding it up and carefully tucking it in a pocket, undoing the top few buttons on his simple white shirt. He still buys off the rack, just standard clothes, usually a few of the same suit. The old Einstein method, don't waste time thinking about clothes you could be using on science. Even caring what he looked like had once seemed an annoyance, but he'd learned that women liked it when you smelled good and had seen a comb in a year. Betty had taught him that.
Better not to think about Betty.
"Peace, mostly. The hardest commodity to find. I thought we'd find it in the wider universe, but war seems to be part of life there, too, sadly."
"I'll have the lasagna," he says to the waitress when they're attended, "And give us a small margherita pie, as well. Seriously, we have to have the pizza, too, it'll be worth the carbs, I promise."
"You're a mutant, then? Or something else?" he says. "As should be obvious, no judgment from me. Genetic deviation is part of nature. It's to be welcomed and expected."
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
Olivia takes that as her cue to relax, as well. She will let her hair fall and relax, the locks tumbling down. She shakes them out and grins at Bruce. "It seems to me that we have to roll back the instincts and biology that got us here. I did not get past the highschool sciences, but one thing that always stuck out to me is how often competition is involved. Even amongst our own kinds, we compete. Cooperation has never quite freed itself from that spirit."
The performer laughs at the mention of carbs. "I am sure it will be. I fret too much over what I eat. I know tomorrow I will burn it all off anyway. Between the shows, training, and dancing for fun -when I can- I am pretty active."
To the question, she nods, and in nodding, that blow hole is more obvious. Though she still does not quite let anyone else see. "That seems to be the case, yes. It all started after a few accidents. I actually had concussions within a week or two of each other and then the headaches started." She sighs softly, "And the hearing issues, and now, well. I guess maybe I'm dolphin girl or something, cause I can see with my eyes closed and I do not even need to sleep like I used to. At first I thought that was amazing, but I get bored around 3AM. I can't think of anything useful to do."
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner nods, "I recognize that. But there is something in the idea of transcending our baser instincts. Greed and fear and hate and...well. But the truth is, humans thrived and came to dominate this planet's ecosystem by cooperating. At the very least with each other. Building agriculture, building civilization, building learning and sharing knowledge and trade. War creates innovation but peace creates abundance," he says.
He cocks his head, "Really? Dolphin? How interesting. Some say they're smarter than humans. I wouldn't argue the point. They seem to have things figured it out. Maybe harmony is the right word," he says. "You're certainly much prettier than any dolphin I've ever seen."
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
Olivia nods thoughtfully. "That is all true. I do not dispute any of that. I would like to see what it would be like. To have a world where nobody ever has to worry about trying to sleep when they are hungry, or wake when they are exhausted. I often wonder how many geniuses we have lost along the way. But if you can do what you suggest, we can celebrate all those little voices that finally get their chance to sing."
She grins at the mention of dolphins being smarter. But he throws her off with the very sweet compliment. See, the funny thing is, Olivia, though many will say she is quite attractive, views Bruce as utterly, laughably, and cosmically out of her league. She sings and dances. He changes the path of the human race. But then... that.. was that flirting? She is blushing.
"Thank you. I suppose I am rather cute for a cetacean. You aren't so bad yourself, you know." She can flirt back, then.
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner still finds it hard to believe, but he's somehow always found beautiful women around him. His ex-wife, Marlo...he didn't know what they saw in him, honestly. But he wasn't about to question it.
"I'm glad you think so," he says softly. The food arrives shortly thereafter, presaged by a basket full of breadsticks and rich, spicy marinara sauce. Each of them is served a steaming plate of food, and the pizza is placed on a metal display towards the outside of the table with a spade to allow Bruce to dish out slices as he sees fit.
"The basil is really strong in the pizza sauce here, I love it," he says, putting a slice on a dish for her first and then one for himself. He takes a sip of his wine and smiles.
"I am glad that you were not lost along the way. And I somehow made my way here, too," he says, raising his glass. "So, do you intend to stay in musical theatre? Or do you have aspirations in Los Angeles?"
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
Olivia tends to talk a lot. Sometimes to a fault, honestly. In this moment, though, she is quiet. She can hear everything nearby. It is hard to focus still, and generally she can only hear whatever she locks onto. In conversations like this, it is heartbeats. They tell a lot about a person. Unfortunately, she also can hear her own heartbeat. Its quickening as she realizes that this conversation has potential stakes she did not anticipate.
This all means that other than a gentle, "Thank you" when he serves her a slice, she is simply paying close attention. When the question comes, though, she needs only a moment more to think about it.
"I have wanted to be Elphaba since I was a little girl. It seemed impossible. Even when I landed my first roles. But before I knew it, I was getting my chance. First just as a kind of emergency replacement-what we call working swing-and then I booked Wicked and got to come in for real. I just found out this past week that soon Rachel-who is Glinda the Good-is going to slip off to Hollywood. I am the voice that they will rely on to keep us going when she leaves. It feels good. Some new voice will be my partner on stage now, and she will look to me to help her find her feet. Other than this work on Broadway, I cannot imagine doing anything else. I found my spot. I have a lot to learn, of course. But this is where my heart belongs."
She will take a moment to try that pizza. And she will let out a shameless groan of delight. "Oh my goodness! You are so right..."
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner smiles, "Sounds like you know what you want and that you're where you want to be. That's a valuable thing. Plenty of people, even very powerful people, wish they had that," he says.
He eats carefully and heartily, trying to be neat. Left to his own devices, he might dig in more intensely or, at least, use the napkin less. He's on his best behavior, so to speak.
"Music was always elusive to me. I like the math of it, but I can't carry a tune to save my life. But I always liked music. Although I was more of a punk rock-alternative kind of guy. Surprise surprise, I had some repressed anger."
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
The thought of Bruce listening to punk rock gets Olivia to giggle. "That is so hard to imagine! I mean, not the anger part. I always guessed you were more of a jazz or classical type." She focuses herself and does not give in to devouring the pizza. She wants to, though.
Instead, she lifts her glass and says, "Here is to a lovely evening, free of outside pressures and expectations, and open to giving in and positively tearing into this amazing food."
She watches Bruce intently in the toast, trying to pry her attention from his pulse. It seems like cheating to her, even if it is not precisely like mind reading. "You know, we can work on that music a bit. After we finish. Oh, do you like dancing? By which I mean do you enjoy it. Some seem to think being good matters when it is feeling good that counts."
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner grins, "I do like classical. Jazz is a little chaotic for my taste. I appreciate the experimentation, but the lack of structure can be...hard on me," he says.
His pulse remains steady, maybe rushing a bit occasionally as he glances upwards, but nothing too dangerous. He's learned to keep himself steady and stable. As much as he can. "Dancing? Well, uh...I think I might enjoy it, but I wouldn't for a second pretend to be good at it. I'm usually more of the wallflower type. An enthusiastic admirer, but I have the coordination of a newborn deer," he says.
"But I'd be willing to try feeling good with you, if you're in the mood to dance. Sure."
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
The lack of danger is good. Olivia does not necessarily remember that particular signifigance in the moment. She should, honestly, as one who reads a considerable amount on the subject of heroes, but she is not think so much about that right now. She only sees the man.
"I like the sound of that. I feel good with you already!" She is getting into the pasta now. There is no worry about openly enjoying it. She giggles after the first few bites. "How did I not know about this place? Is this a secret only known to scientists? Are these ingredients made out of thin air?"
Still, dancing is on her mind. She cannot cmopletely lose herself. This is the kind of pasta that would otherwise tempt her to eating herself in to a deliciously pleasant food coma.
"Hmm, do you think we are allowed to dance here? If not, I know just the place. It is equally private."
- Bruce Banner has posed:
Bruce Banner smiles, "Hey, I stumbled on it myself. Maybe it's just that it's been relying on me to spread the word and I'm dreadful at it," he says.
He excuses himself for a second and goes over to the counter, leaning over and talking for a moment to the older Italian woman back there. He gestures back at his booth and the old woman ruffles his hair for a moment as he moves over to stand by the booth, offering his hand. The waitresses move a few unused tables off to the side, making a little bit of room "The owner's mother said it's okay ,so it's okay." he grins. He selected an old, slow Sinatra tune off the jukebox...
- Olivia Gaudin has posed:
Olivia has a thing for Sinatra. She knows the tune from the start. "The Last Dance," she says gently, "Very good selection." She sets her hand in his and rises smoothly. There is no hesitation. Not exactly. There is a moment where part of her is very deliberately opening the door to see just where this dance is going.
She moves close, and lets Bruce take the lead. As she was struggling to express earlier, it is not the skill that matters. It is not the what of a dance that really counts. It is the how of it. She has a kind of intuition about her when it comes to motion and music, but more than those things she is reading her partner's direction.
Along the way, she will say, "Thank you. For all of this. I asked but figured you would politely decline. I am really enjoying tonight. I do not know how your world is from day to day, but if you want to meet again, the answer is yes."
In some things, the lady can lead, too.
