- Daimon Hellstrom has posed:
Off of Daimon Hellstrom's bedroom is a locked door that Qira has, thus far, not been shown. In fact, she probably won't remember the door being there in all the time she's been in the room. Usually, it's kept hidden.
Daimon has a hand on his adopted niece's shoulder. "Tonight," he says, "we're going to go over your new responsibilities." He flashes her a crooked smile. "Part of being an Initiate into this school of magic is... well, doing the bitch work. It's more than just about teaching humility."
Daimon unlocks the door, but doesn't open it just yet. "It's about teaching the importance of the little details. When you're responsible for them, it's easier to internalize them and memorize them and whatever else. You excited yet, kiddo?"
- Qira Quest has posed:
Qira knows and understands that this is part and parcel of learning anything. You have to do the scutwork, learn the basics, before you can advance. It was no different in the League. You had chores, often ones most would consider demeaning, so you could be broken down and built back up. She's been expecting this since being handed the primer some weeks ago.
Glancing up at Daimon from under the thick fringe of bangs, she pays close attention to his demeanor as well as his words. While she anticipated having the equivalent of magical chores, she wasn't certain what those would entail. Stil, she nods to him and offers a faint, quick smile.
"I understand, uncle. I will attend my chores diligently and with great care. I expect anything less could be dangerous to more than just my life." Still, there's a brief bloom of curiosity over exactly WHAT those chores will be. Blinking at his question, she gives a small chuckle, "I'm not certain 'excited' is the correct term. But I am ready and... intrigued."
- Daimon Hellstrom has posed:
Daimon pushes open the door. "I've never really given this room a name. I just think of it as 'the room.' But it's where I do my most important magic, my most intense meditation."
Inside, the room is painted crimson on the walls and ceiling. The floor is covered in black rugs. The room is totally dark until Daimon waves a hand, causing candles to light. The candles are the room's only illumination, and it's sparse, at that.
Facing one wall is an altar, covered in a black drapery that bears a large red inverted pentagram on it. At either end of the altar are gold candelabras, with black candles. In the center is an ancient-looking book, bound in leather, with no hint as to what it might be. On the wall behind the altar hangs a cloth banner that depicts Baphomet, or some Baphomet-esque demon. At the other end of the room is an oak chest, currently closed.
"You'll be tending to the upkeep of the room. The little details matter. The altar, for example, always faces East. The candles are always black unless I say otherwise. The drapery should hang evenly on the table so that the pentagram is centered. That sort of thing." Daimon then steps over to the oak chest, to unlatch it.
- Qira Quest has posed:
Nodding, Qira steps into the room when motioned to do so, looking around in the darkness without issue, then adjusting her eyes when the candles are lit. Taking in everything in the room, the altar, the candelabra, the candles, the drapings, the tome, the banner, the chest. She's already making a mental map of the room, pulling the dimensions of the room by pacing it off and doing the calculations.
Turning back towards Daimon, she gives a nod, taking mental notes to attach to the map of the room. Altar faces east. Black candles, asterisk, unless otherwise noted. Altar cloth hung evenly with penatagram centered. "Do you need the book conditioned? Does the altar cloth or banner require washing or just general brushing and upkeep?"
While Daimon is unlatching the chest, Qira uses her hand and fingers to take measurements of the altar and cloth, calculating out where the cloth will need to be situated to keep the pentagram centered. Adding that note to her mental map of the room, she turns back towards Daimon and looks curiously towards the chest.
- Daimon Hellstrom has posed:
"General brushing and upkeep, unless we spill something on it," Daimon says. "The book... that's the family bible, so to speak." He looks over at Qira with one of those little smiles that are almost a challenge in their own right. "Just keep it from gathering too much dust. You shouldn't handle it directly too much yet. You're trained with all kinds of weapons -- so in weapons terms, that book is a suitcase nuke."
Inside the chest are various things bundled in black cloth. "These live in here until they're needed for rituals. They should be at least checked daily, but they need to be wrapped up in black cloth. Oh, by the way, when it's ritual time, meditation time, barefoot only. I'm sure that's a problem for you." Daimon grins.
He unwraps the items bound in cloth. A big quartz tetrahedron. A large silver bowl. Several large silver chalices. A silver censor, like a priest would use. A wickedly sharp knife with a wooden handle. "All of these are important ritual artifacts. You're going to end up using all of them at some point."
- Qira Quest has posed:
"Understood." Qira gives a small nod to the expectations for the altar cloth. She quirks a faint smile at the mention of a 'family bible' and nods, "As you say, uncle. I will be sparse and creful in my handling of the book until you say otherwise. I understand the risks in handling a magic tome without knowing how. I will be careful." She's seen the results of it, from over-ambitious idiots that thought they knew what they were doing.
Stepping in closer, she leans forward to examine the contents of the chest. "I presume that if used, it will be my task to see them cleaned and dried and returned to their wrappings? Shall I polish the silver every six months?" The mention of being barefoot has her chuckling softly, glancing down at her bare feet before looking back to him with a faint grin.
The knife is examined carefully, "Where are the cleaning products kept for this room? I presume the carpet will occasionally require vacuuming or possibly steam cleaning?" Qira looks back to Daimon with a lifted brow, since there doesn't seem to be a broom closet attached to the room.
- Daimon Hellstrom has posed:
"Yes, please do polish them. The stuff is in the closet down the hall," Daimon says. It's a boring answer, but it's a true one. "We don't keep anything in this room other than what's in here. Anything we might bring in for a ritual leaves with us afterward -- but we shouldn't need to bring anything in, ninety-nine times out of a hundred."
Daimon begins re-wrapping each of the items. He's doing so with great care, but a deftness that shows he's done this Christ knows how many times before. "After the cleaning, start doing your reading and meditation in here. You'll find that it might become more intense. That's a good thing. It means you're getting attuned to the room's power, feeling it flow through you, all that kind of stuff." Daimon reaches out to gently ruffle Qira's hair. "Having fun being a Hellstrom yet?"
- Qira Quest has posed:
Looking up at Daimon when he ruffles her hair, she smiles faintly, "Yes, actually. I do not balk at chores, or hard work, uncle. I think you will find I enjoy having a routine to follow." She reaches out to help him wrap the items back in their cloth, hands moving with careful precision to re-warp them in the manner they had been prior.
Mention of doing her meditation and reading in here earns a small nod, and a glance to him, "Does that mean you will provide me with a key to this room, or will I need to fetch you to open it?" Obviously, it would be easier with the former, but the latter may be necessary. She quirks a faint smile, "Unless you wish to simply summon me whenever you wish me to clean the room."
- Daimon Hellstrom has posed:
"You'll have a key," Daimon says. He closes the oak chest when everything is finished. "Check in on the room daily, do your nightly meditation in here, and just... soak it all in. Learn to appreciate the little details, the way everything in this room should be /just/ right. It might seem picky, or particular... but that's magic, Qira."
