It was chilly and windy in Metropolis, typical of winter along the coast, but the sun was out. It appeared to herald a new beginning for Garfield Logan, otherwise known as Beast Boy. The one he loved was back in his life again, and after some confusion led to a brief spat between the two that never should have happened, resolution was found and steps had even been taken to find an apartment for the two to live in.

Things were looking up. Gar, however, wasn't as he wandered past a pier along the beach, the area deserted. Had he been, he might have spotted an odd sight: a green hawk circling overhead, as if looking for a meal like a lizard or a mouse.

Or another green shapeshifter.

It happened suddenly, just as Gar was pulling out his phone. A flash of motion out of the corner of an eye, talons cutting across the side of his face to leave deep cuts that immediately bled. Dropping the phone, he spun away as a hand darted to his cheek, coming up red as the gashes sent a surge of pain through his head, causing his eyes to go wide. Another few centimeters and it could have taken his sight.

"What the hell?!" he blurted, turning to face his attacker, who had by now circled back around and was diving straight at him. Just as Gar prepared to shift, the hawk beat him to it, landing on him as a bear with a sickening thud, driving him into the sand. It softened the impact to some extent but it still knocked the breath out of him, proven by the gasp that followed.

Next, the bear swiped a large paw across Gar's chest, tearing through his clothing and drawing more blood, along with a sharp cry. "Stop! Whoever you are..!" He got his arms up, but they were quickly shredded by more clawing and biting, before the bear morphed into a tiger.

In moments, the big cat's jaws clamped around Gar's left arm and dug in viciously. He began to see stars mixed with indescribable pain as the arm was mauled, then snapped off just above the elbow, then eaten in just a few bites. More blood stained the area as Gar screamed and frantically tried to scamper back to create some space, to call for help, to signal the Titans that he was being attacked and it was bad. Very bad.

Then he froze, for he was staring up at the face of someone very, very familiar to him. It was his own. "How..?" he asked weakly, stumbling over the question as shock already began to set in, cradling what was left of his ruined arm with his good one. His upper body was already soaked red, clothes in tatters.

"Hello, you. Or should I say..me," Garfield Logan said darkly, looking down at himself. "I'd tell you what's going on, but I'm afraid you won't be around long enough for it to matter. All that's important is I'm you, now and forever, and I'm going to help take over this world. Now do me a favor...and die."

At that point, Gar's doppelganger changed into a large ape, grabbing him with both hands, throwing him into the sea where he started to sink. No effort was made to cover up any signs of attack, except to kick some sand around where the heaviest concentrations of blood were. It could have been anything by the time anyone might see it.

Turning back into normal, new Gar bent over to pick up old Gar's phone, unlocking it with the press of a thumb. It took a few seconds for him to familiarize himself with some of what was in there, including scrolling through recent pictures, finding the social media accounts. A malevolent smile took shape and he said, "Oh, this is going to be good."

Pocketing the phone, he whistled pleasantly as he left the area, en route to the Tower the Titans called home. He would have to be careful at first, try not to give anything away before he knew more, but it wouldn't really matter in the end. There would be others. This version of Earth was already doomed. It was only a matter of time.

Old Gar sank deeper in the saltwater, drifting away from the beach with the current. His body was in bad shape, his thoughts already fading, water filling his lungs. He would drown, or bleed out, or maybe a shark would find him thanks to the blood trail and finish off what his evil copy had started. How that was even possible, he couldn't comprehend right now. But there was so much he wouldn't get to do, so much he wouldn't get to say.

Then he remembered something. It took the last bit of focus he could muster, everything about him threatening to shut down, but somehow it happened.

A green starfish settled onto the ocean floor. It was missing most of a limb. For now.
