Balancer-for-hire. This is a man who understands that the game is rigged against the vast majority of humanity. Sure, he knows he cannot fix every ill, and he cannot correct the world's problems. What he can do, though, is balance the scales and set things right when the weak are taken advantage of by the strong. Odds against you? Nowhere to turn? Looking for justice? Call Desmond.

Timeline:
* Oct, 1604: Desmond mac Morna is born to musician and fugitive Morna MacSweeney and his lover Etain in the coastal village of Sidhemara.

* Apr, 1605: Morna drunkenly declares repeatedly that he would give up anything to play before the English king and 'show that useless git what Irish talent looks like.' Etain tells him, "thrice bargained, and done." Three days later, Desmond apparently dies in his crib. In actuality the baby was taken to Tir na Nog by Etain who was a creature of the Fae.

* Early 1600s: Etain bargains Desmond away for power, and the boy grows up in the dark and violent Unseelie Court as a Squire to a ruthless faerie warlord named Aoife the Ravenspeaker. As he comes of age he is sent on missions of mayhem, sabotage and murder.

* 1658: On a mission in Ulster he falls in love with a young woman named Sorcha. Over the next few decades he visits Sorcha intermittently, and secretly begins dealing with other Fae to expand his magical knowledge. Both are outside the bounds approved by Aiofe. Desmond comes to realize he ages more slowly than Sorcha.

* 1692: Desmond returns to Ulster and finds Sorcha has died from being kicked by a horse. She was over 60, while Desmond appeared to be no more than 20.

* 1723: After burying his grief in his work for decades, Desmond discovers Aiofe had been aware of his dalliance with Sorcha. Not only had Aoife had Sorcha killed, but had also killed Desmond's child that Sorcha had given birth to during a period of his absence.

* 1725: Desmond begins to learn portal magic on his own, though can only travel to the place he met Sorcha, or from any location back to Tir na Nog.

* 1733: Aiofe learns of Desmond's attempts to learn new magics and imprisons him in a block of quartz for 250 years as punishment. Desmond is conscious but unable to act.

* 1985: Aiofe releases Desmond, who learns not get caught ever again. Over the next 35 years he is more circumspect in how he gains power.

* May 2020: Sent to murder mortal musician Caitlin Morrisey who had unknowingly crossed Aiofe in a bargain, Desmond finds Caitlin's voice, face and even attitude are so like Sorcha that he believes her to be Sorcha reborn.

* Aug 2020: Desmond strikes a deal with Aiofe for 10 years of freedom and then for him to assume Caitlin's debt and suffer what fate Aiofe had in mind for her. Caitlin's death is faked in a plane crash while she and her band are taken to perform for Aiofe in Tir na Nog during the 10 year period of the debt's suspension.

* Jan 2021: Desmond acquires a PI license from New York State and spends his remaining time pursuing injustice while he awaits Caitlin's debt being collected.

Timeline_1:
* May, 1593: Morna MacSweeney, a Gallowglas of Scottish ancestry and sworn to the O'Donnells in North Donegal is called to the service of the O'Neills in what would later be known as the Nine Years' War (AKA Tyrone's Rebellion), an Irish rebellion against the English. Morna is just 16 as the war begins.

* Jan, 1595: The Fae have almost entirely left the Emerald Isle as war spreads across Ireland.

* Mar, 1603: Tyrone's Rebellion ends in bitter defeat for the Irish. Morna MacSweeny leaves service in the outskirts of Belfast. He has, to that point, engaged in warfare for his entire adulthood. He is widely regarded as a mighty warrior and hero of the Irish Rebellion, having slew many men and survived over a dozen battles.

* May, 1603: Morna MacSweeny meets a local farmgirl outside of Ulster, Etain. She is an orphan, her entire family killed, she says, when the English burned her village during the war.

* Jul, 1603: Morna and Etain become lovers. Things become complicated for Morna when Etain claims, soon after, that she was raped by mercenaries who served the English during the war. Morna flies into a red rage and kills the men in an Ulster tavern, an event Morna calls a 'fair fight' and the local constabulary calls 'the brutal murder of five men.'

* Aug, 1603: Morna and Etain flee Ulster. Etain claims to have distant relations in a small village that lies between Ballyshannon and Bundrowes on Donegal Bay, on the Northwestern coast of Ireland.

* Sep, 1603: Morna and Etain arrive in the coastal village of Sidhemara. The village is ancient, dotted with fairy mounds, and remote enough that it follows the old Gael ways.

* Oct, 1604: Morna and Etain welcome their first child into the world. Fearing detection by English law and now fully embracing the old ways, Morna and Etain name him Desmond mac Morna.

* Feb, 1605: Morna mac Fionn, local musician and storyteller in Sidhemara, husband of the fair and lovely Etain, begins gaining a reputation as one of the finest poets, musicians, and storytellers on the Western coast of Ireland. His skill in these arts comes from seemingly nowhere, but he gains great local fame, very rapidly.

* Apr, 1605: Morna mac Fionn drunkenly declares to his wife that he would give up anything to play to the English king, and 'show that useless git what Irish talent looks like.' The conversation grows serious, and after asking him three times if he truly means it, she answers, "thrice bargained, and done."

* Apr, 1605: Three days later, Desmond mac Morna - not even a year old - apparently dies in his crib during the night. The truth is more sinister.

* Jun, 1605: Morna mac Fionn is confronted by his wife, who reveals that she is a creature of the Fae -- a leanan sidhe, and that their bargain was now concluded. She explains that their deal has been completed, and that she would return to Tir na Nog. Morna would get his audience with James I and would show him what Irish talent looked like.

* Oct, 1605: Morna mac Fionn, AKA Morna MacSweeney, is arrested on charges of rebellion, sedition, and murder. He is brought before King James I himself during his trial. King James, having heard of Morna's talent as a musician, says that he will grant mercy if Morna plays for him.

* Oct, 1605: Morna MacSweeney, Irish Rebel, learns what 'mercy' means to James I. He is tortured to death and beheaded, but buried intact with a harp in the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon.

* Oct, 1605: Desmond mac Morna marks the passage of his first natal day amongst the less-than-tender attentions of the Unseelie Court. His mother, Etain, bargains away her mortal son to another leanan sidhe in exchange for a great deal of personal power during the celebration of his first year of life.

* Nov, 1605: Desmond mac Morna, age 1, is named Squire of the Unseelie Court. His benefactor and mistress is a ruthless and terrible faerie warlord of nearly incalculable personal and political power - Aoife the Ravenspeaker.

Timeline_2:
* 1609: On the occasion of his fifth birthday, Aoife the Ravenspeaker presents Desmond with his first teachers - a teacher of magic, of war, and of human social graces. Aoife explains to Desmond that he will become her mortal Champion, enforcing her will in the mortal world.

* 1615: Now 11 years old, Desmond is unfortunately involved in his first glimpse of death. The world of the Unseelie Court is dark and violent. Aoife reasons that he needs to be toughened up. She forces him to watch the execution of a small band of fae that dared cross Mab, the Unseelie Queen. She is disappointed by his disgust.

* 1635: By now, Desmond has been sent on several missions to enforce Aoife's will in the mortal world. These missions are generally of two varieties: go somewhere and create mayhem, either through sabotage and vandalism, or murder people, all in the performance of debt collection duties. The murdering is hard for Desmond. He hates it. Generally, though, the people he is killing have crossed a wicked faerie they made some sort of deal with. So he deals with it.

* 1658: Desmond is sent to Ulster, a place he read about when reading a Fae history of his father. He goes to the ruins of the tavern where his father met his mother. There, he meets a young woman named Sorcha, on the very spot his father met his mother. The chance encounter changes Desmond's life. Sorcha had entered a Christian nunnery as a novice, but was cast out because she was unsuited to that life. Though wild and free, Sorcha had a strong moral center. Her and Desmond formed a strong friendship in those three nights he was in the mortal world.

* 1659: Desmond begins engaging in bargains with several faeries not aligned with Aoife the Ravenspeaker, in an effort to gain magical knowledge outside of what Aoife prescribed for him. Specifically, he begins learning how to create portal gateways from various points in Tir na Nog to Ulster. He begins sneaking out to see Sorcha.

* 1665: Desmond begins to realize he does not experience time the same as most people do. Sorcha continues wondering why he disappears for months or years at a time. To Desmond, it seems like only a night or several nights have passed since he last saw her. He also begins to realize that while he looks as if he were roughly 18, Sorcha seems to look a little older with each visit.

* 1692: Desmond returns to Ulster, and learns that Sorcha had been accidentally killed, apparently by a mundane accident - a horse kicked her as it was being shoed and her neck was broken. Sorcha was over 60 at the time of her death. Desmond appeared to be no more than 20.

* 1723: Desmond throws himself into his work. Aoife has sent him on many successful missions over the years. However, he learns that Aoife had long known about his dalliance with Sorcha, and that he and Sorcha had begot a son that Aoife had had murdered when he was born. Desmond had been kept away from the woman on purpose for several subjective years, so that he would not form an 'unhealthy attachment' in Aoife's words. He also learned, to his horror, that Sorcha's death had been no accident. Aoife had had her murdered.

* 1725: Desmond begins trying to learn portal magic on his own, in more than a passing manner. However, the need to keep it secret from Aoife greatly slows his progress. The only two portals that he can reliably create is one to the spot he first met Sorcha on, from Aoife's demesne in Tir na Nog, and to Tir na Nog from wherever he happens to be.

* 1733: Aoife learns of Desmond's attempts to learn travel and Way magic, and decides to imprison him in a quartz block for 250 years as punishment. Desmond is conscious for the entire time, but unable to act.

* 1985: Aoife frees Desmond and hopes that he 'learned a valuable lesson.' Indeed, he did. Desmond learned to never get caught, ever again. Over the next 35 years, he is extremely circumspect in how he gains power. He is unable to advance his knowledge of Way magic.

Timeline_3:
* May 2020: Desmond has finally learned how to be subtle and how to deceive an immortal faerie warlord. This is no small feat. He is sent to murder a mortal who had crossed Aoife in some fashion. The woman in question was a mortal musician who had once bartered with Aoife for talent. The terms of that deal had not been honored, and whatever had been promised annoyed Aoife enough that Desmond was sent to collect the debt. Permanently. Unfortunately for Aoife, Fate intervened. That vocalist, Caitlin Morrisey - yes, THAT Caitlan Morrisey - happened to be a dead ringer for Sorcha. Same voice. Same face. Same attitude. Desmond believed that it was Sorcha reborn. After talking with her, he further began to realize that Caitlin didn't really even understand that she had made a bargain with a faerie warlord. She didn't believe in faeries, didn't believe in pacts of power, and thought the entire thing had been a joke.

* Jun 2020: This turn of events made Desmond finally understand that he couldn't simply live as what amounted to a Faerie hitman. Not anymore. While he had to act within the confines of the mantle that gave him his powers, that didn't mean that he had to create every deal to his own advantage. Desmond began to understand that even within the realm of Fae magic, there was room for morality and doing the right thing.

* Aug 2020: Desmond strikes a deal with Aoife. He would assume Caitlin's debt, in exchange for 10 years of freedom from Aiofe's demesne in Tir na Nog, in the mortal world. At the end of that period, Desmond himself would be subject to the collection of Caitlin's debt, as the debt was suspended, not paid. He would still be required to operate with the rules and restrictions that govern his mantle of power. Desmond was free to pursue his own deals - even if they meant charging a dollar a day for fighting monsters. Desmond began to understand, through Caitlin, that injustice is everywhere. His eyes had been opened.

* Sep 2020: Famed pop singer Caitlin Morrisey disappears when her airplane mysteriously vanishes while flying over the Pacific Ocean. The world assumes she is dead. In reality, her, her entourage, her band, and the flight crew has been brought to Aiofe's palace in Tir na Nog, where they will perform during the period of the debt's suspension for Aiofe personally.

* Jan 2021: Desmon mac Morna arranges, through several bargains with various wild Fae and even Aiofe the Ravenspeaker herself, to be issued a New York State private investigator license, and to have certain pieces of equipment made available to him. Using this cover, he intends to spend his remaining time before Caitlin's debt is collected out of his hide pursuing injustice. Specifically, he intends to help those who end up victimized on the bad side of poor deals with the supernatural.

Personality

Careful:
Desmond mac Morna began his life being traded like a commodity from one faerie to another, and then turned into a tool to act as a faerie warlord's personal hatchetman. He grew up in a culture where any deal you agree to must be honored, no matter how bizarre, how unfair, how silly, or how malicious the deal is intended to be. As a result, Desmond tends to be /extremely/ careful about the exact way he says things. This has made him a stickler for proper grammar and for understanding the rules. In the same vein, he tends to be careful about how he approaches any situation, rarely simply throwing himself into it.

Deliberate:
Desmond's natural inclination is to act intuitively with what 'feels right.' And in combat, that is generally where his actions end up taking him. But after so many years of dealing with beings that use that natural inclination of humanity against him, he has trained himself to not immediately act, even when he believes he understands something intuitively. He is a careful thinker, and he tries to work through every possible avenue of thought before taking action, when possible. This can lead him to seeming to be indecisive. He's not, not really -- once he makes a decision, he normally sticks with it -- but getting to that point can take time.

Inquisitive:
Natural caution is important to survival when you live in the world of the Fae, but natural curiosity is the only way you will learn to overcome your environment. Desmond has a strongly inquisitive nature. He cannot resist poking into things that pique his interest, even when he knows for certain it's a terrible idea. He considers it to be a terrible character flaw, but it is liek an itch he cannot scratch when a mystery is presented. It gets him in trouble. Often.

Moral:
Desmond has spent over 400 years dealing with treacherous and wicked fairies, and still both has a soul and isn't a morally repugnant human being. That, in and of itself, is noteworthy. The only way he has been able to make it this far is to truly consider his own motivations for doing anything, and trying to make decisions based on what he perceives to be the right thing. This has the side effect of making him seem to come to decisions slowly, but once they are made, he is implacable.

Observant:
Desmond has been the subject of malicious practical jokes, scorn, attempts at corruption, treachery, and murder attempts, among other things. This has turned him into an extremely observant person. He has an eye for detail, and is good at sniffing out attempts to conceal and misdirect. In fact, this is sometimes a major problem for the man. He generally /assumes/ there is misdirection or deceit involved in most situations, even when there are not.

Paranoid:
Desmond, unfortunately, was not raised in a loving, supportive environment. Everyone around him was, in every interaction, always seeking advantage. This has left him assuming that /every/ interaction is one where the other party, even if they do not outright mean him harm, id definitely looking to get the upper hand.

Powers

High Pain Tolerance:
Desmond's mantle shields him from the worst effects of pain. While this is a two-edged sword, he cannot really be debilitated by pain. He is aware that 'something' happened, but is able to keep fighting and acting through agonizing pain that would disable most anyone. However, is this ability is lost for any reason, all that pain suddenly comes crashing in....

Quick:
Desmond is a physically gifted man, and even if he had not been granted magical power would inevitably have ended up a professional athlete. However, he has been granted a mantle of Fae power by Aiofe, his faerie benefactor. The Mantle of Aiofe's Champion is physically represented by an pendant he wears at his neck, made from faemetal and emerald.

The Mantle grants him extreme strength. However, Desmond is still limited by his mortal body. He's fast. 110 mph fastballs present no particular challenge to him. However, he operates on the level of people. He can react to things as quickly as any other normal human, but he is only at the far end of the 'normal human' bell curve.

Quick Healer:
Desmond does not regenerate. Losing a limb, for example, would be extremely bad. However, the mantle of Aiofe's Champion grants him the ability to heal extremely quickly, and from injuries that most people never would. A broken bone takes only a week or two to mend. Bad nerve damage generally heals over the course of a few months. Scars and burns disappear over the course of a year or two. Surgical repairs to his body heal extremely quickly post-op. The severed limb from the previous example could probably be successfully re-attached if it recovered and not too badly mangled.

Robust:
Desmond is a physically gifted man, and even if he had not been granted magical power would inevitably have ended up a professional athlete. However, he has been granted a mantle of Fae power by Aiofe, his faerie benefactor. The Mantle of Aiofe's Champion is physically represented by an pendant he wears at his neck, made from faemetal and emerald.

The Mantle grants him superb stamina. However, Desmond is still limited by his mortal body. He can take an incredible beating, can perform for many hours, and is physically very tough, but his limits are still those of a normal human man, albeit he is at the VERY far end of that bell curve.

Strong:
Desmond is a physically gifted man, and even if he had not been granted magical power would inevitably have ended up a professional athlete. However, he has been granted a mantle of Fae power by Aiofe, his faerie benefactor. The Mantle of Aiofe's Champion is physically represented by an pendant he wears at his neck, made from faemetal and emerald.

The Mantle grants him extreme strength. However, Desmond is still limited by his mortal body. By way of comparison, he can bench press roughly 1400 pounds. This would make him a world record holder, but only by a few pounds.

Summon Benefactor:
The Mantle of Aiofe's Champion allows its bearer (Desmond, in this case) to summon Aiofe the Ravenspeaker to a prepared circle in the mortal world. This gives Desmond no power over this extremely powerful being. It only allows him to get her to show up. Like all faeries, he can attempt to bargain with her, or he can use the summoning to pass along information or objects Aiofe has requested (or commanded) Desmond to obtain. If the summoning circle were damaged, it is possible Aiofe could escape into the mortal realm, until the next sunrise.

Way Portals:
Desmond mac Morna spent many years trying to acquire the knowledge of how to open Ways from the mortal world to Tir na Nog in an effort to find shortcuts from one part of the mortal realm of existence to another. He knows it is possible, but his ability is barely above that of a novice. He is only capable of opening two portals: from the mortal world to a (mostly) safe spot in Aiofe the Ravenspeaker's demesne in Tir na Nog, and from that same safe spot to the ruins of a 17th century tavern on the outskirts of Ulster, Northern Ireland, an area that is currently under government protection as a 'site of historical significance.'

It should be noted that Desmond cannot reliably open these portals every time. He fails often, and his failure rate is higher under stress (like, you know, combat.) Failures can cause backlash, accidentally open portals to extremely nasty places, summon creatures that shouldn't be on the mortal plane, etc.

Skills

Brawling:
Desmond is unlikely to beat a high-end UFC fighter. However, he HAS trained as a hand fighter, is extremely competent. As a consequence, he is better than 99.999% of humanity at doing injury to people with his bare hands. However, when compared to possible opponents on a superhero scale, he is of intermediate ability at best.

Horseman:
Desmond was raised in an age where if you wanted to get around, you rode a horse, a wagon, or you walked. Given his upbringing, he was taught how to ride at a young age. He's no Olympic equestrian, but he can ride and fight from horseback competently.

Interrogation:
Spending 400 years engaged in verbal sparring, deal-making, and riddle games with a wicked Faerie court has the effect of honing one's wit and verbal skills. Desmond is extremely adept at drawing people into verbal traps where they unwittingly reveal things during the course of conversation.

Magical Knowledge:
Desmond has spent the last 400 years under tutelage of Aiofe the Ravenspeaker's tutors. He has a strong grounding in the fundamentals and theory of how Fae magic operates. While his practical skills are primarily channeled towards building his physical ability via various rites, he has a strong general understanding of faerie magic, Otherworld, and faerie lore in general.

Melee Weapons:
Desmond mac Morna benefitted from instruction by some of the finest combatants and killers in the Unseelie Court. From a very young age, he was raised learned how to handle melee weapons. He is a skilled general melee fighter, and is probably one of the finest swordsmen in the world. By mortal human standards, that is. There is nothing supernatural about his training. He is physically gifted and has trained for a very long time under the tutelage of beings who have trained for millenia, but there is nothing magical about it.

Musician:
It's really more of a hobby than anything else, but Desmond is a decently skilled flautist, harp player, and vocalist. He's not close to professional quality, but he is at least a competent amateur. He /loves/ music, however limited his actual talent and skill, however. He is, in fact, fascinated by it.

Observation:
Desmond has a highly trained sense for observing and noticing detail. He's not on the level of Sherlock Holmes or anything, but he has heavily invested time and effort in noticing details and keeping them mentally organized, to the point that little escapes his notice. At least, when he knows to look for it.

Stealth:
Desmond has been trained nearly since birth to act as a mortal enforcer for a Faerie warlord. But of those job duties entail sneaking past people to do things. As a consequence, Desmond has benefitted from formal training under the guidance of faerie subject matter experts on the topics of moving silently, remaining unseen, camouflage, and generally remaining below the level of perception of most people. He is highly skilled in this area, by any standard.

Thrown Weapons:
Firearms were just becoming a thing when Desmond was learning to fight. He prefers to close with and deal with enemies at melee ranges. Sometimes, that's just not an option. Desmond has trained with all manner of thrown weapon as a result. Spears, javelins, and similar weapons are very familiar to him. Just as often, he will hurl manhole covers, random trashcans, or whatever is handy. He does have specific training with thrown knives.

He is only 'passably good' with thrown weapons. It definitely is not his speciality, and any ranged specialist will definitely be better than him at this sort of task. He is, however, very good at throwing Moonsilver. He can pull off a few 'trick shots' with the weapon when it is in its knife form, but like most of his abilities, he can do nothing outside of what would be accepted as the human norms, albeit, a strong, fast, talented human.

Resources

Live-In Office Space:
Desmond, when he decided to take on Caitlin Morrisey's debts, understood that he would be operating on his own without any of the material support that he enjoyed when working on the behalf of his Fae benefactor. Before he left Tir na Nog for his ten year pass, he struck a deal with a wild Fae and bargained for a ten year lease on a small rooftop office and loft in East Harlem. Desmond wasn't exactly familiar with New York City when he made the deal, and, unfortunately, it's in an extremely high crime part of East Harlem.

Still, he has an office area to meet with clients in, and behind that, a small loft apartment that even includes a kitchenette. And he doesn't have to worry about the rent going up! Who says selling your soul is a bad idea?

Magic Spidersilk Suit:
In its natural form, the suit appears to be an expensive, fashionable suit cut in a conservative, European fashion, complete with a raw silk overcoat. The suit, however, is enchanted with Fae magic to keep him warm on the coldest night and cool on the hottest day. It provides no armoring or other protection to Desmond, but the nature of the enchantment is such that the suit will repair itself from any sort of damage over time, so long as some part of it remains. The largest remaining portion will regrow back into a suit, while all the other pieces fall to dust and disappear from the mortal realm. This process takes 28 days.

Moonsilver:
As a gift on the occasion of his 20th birthday, Aoife the Ravenspeaker presented Desmond mac Morna with Moonsilver, an enchanted blade. Moonsilver is crafted of a silvery, iridescent metal that is some alloy primarily made of orichalchum, rather than iron. Its edge is monomolecular in sharpness, never loses its edge, and borders on unbreakable. Of most interest is that the weapon can change in size, from that of a short, well-balanced knife to a large, claymore-sized weapon over six feet long with a snap of Desmond's fingers. It returns to his hand from any location within his line of sight when Desmond gives the command: 'Airgead gealach dom!'

Weaknesses

Doomed:
When push came to shove, Desmond was unwilling to let a normal mortal woman, Caitlin Morrisey, be killed or worse by Aoife the Ravenspeaker. The problem, of course, is that Caitlin Morrisey did actually make a deal with a powerful Faerie warlord, and she did in fact renege on the agreement. She didn't intend to. She didn't understand what she was getting into. She thought it was a joke when she entered the bargain. None of that matters to the Fae. When Desmond was sent to collect the woman to pay her debt, Desmond was moved by her complete naivete in the matter.

Desmond couldn't stomach what was going to happen to Caitlin. Despite the fact that they were not close, were not intimate with one another, or even particularly good friends, Desmond agreed to take on Caitlin's debt in exchange for 10 years unmolested by Aoife or her agents on the mortal plane of existence. Caitlin was taken to Aiofe's demesne, where she performs for Aoife in the meantime.

When the ten years is up (in September, 2030,) Desmond will be required to take Caitlin's place, and suffer whatever fate Caitlin was destined to suffer in her place. Desmond never told her what the deal was, preferring to not weigh down her conscience.

Desmond searches for a way to escape his dooomed fate, but deep down, he is fatalistic about it. He understands that it is extremely unlikely that there's any way out for him.

Fatalistic:
It's not that Desmond is cheerless. Really, he's actually fun-loving and easy-going. It's just that he knows he is living life on a limited clock, and that his fate is almost certainly a dark and terrible one. This has led to Desmond assuming the worst about any situation, any person, or, well, anything. He assumes the worst. About everything. The bleak outlook can lead him to make decisions as if there were no hope for the future, and those decisions are sometimes absolutely the wrong ones.

Iron:
Faeriebane. Cold Iron. Fe. Steel. Whatever you call it, anything with a high iron content in it is roughly equivalent to nerve gas laced plutonium as far as Desmond is concerned. While under the protection of the Mantle of Aoife's Champion, any weapon with a high iron content that connects will cause grievous wounds to Desmond. Those wounds, notably, cannot heal quickly. Indeed, he needs external help for them to heal /at all./ Additionally, if even a small amount of iron pierces his body (or more than an ounce or so is ingested for some reason,) the Mantle of Aoife's Champion becomes inert and non-functional. He feels every nuance of pain, just like a normal person. His speed, strength, and stamina return to human norms. He can no longer heal quickly. Finally, he is incapable of opening a Way portal or summoning his benefactor when in this state.

My Word Is My Bond:
Desmond's power derives from Fae magic. His benefactor, the source of his power, is even more bound by the concepts of debts, contracts, and following the letter of the law than the majority of the Fae.

Because of the pull of the mantle of power that is bound up with him intrinsically, Desmond is incapable of telling an outright lie. He can exaggerate, he can leave out facts, he can embellish, and he can commit lies of omission. But he cannot say something to a living person that is provably untrue. This extends to the concept of any debt he agrees is his or any contract he agrees to without duress -- because it would be a lie to have agreed to either and to have not meant it, he is bound to keep to his word, or else he risks losing access to the source of his power.

He can use loopholes all day long, however. Faeries are slippery, and not to be bargained with lightly.

Obsessive:
Having gotten a taste of the power he's tasted with regards to travelling through Way portals, using Otherworld as a means of, effectively, teleporting across the world, Desmond is drawn to any knowledge he believes will help him learn that skill better than he does. This is not some hobby for him; he will risk himself, the success of his mission, and perhaps other people if he believes he stands to gain knowledge about this topic.

Slow To Act:
Desmond is a deliberative thinker. Coming to a decision is generally a process for him -- one that involves internal flow charts and lots of pontificating on potential outcomes. As a consequence, he can be slow to act. Once combat actually begins, he will ract more normally, but he can be very, VERY slow to start down any particular path, and getting him to commit to a specific course of action or goal can be....difficult.

Unaware of Injury:
The Champion's Mantle grants Desmond some significant and incredible powers. One of those is the ability to ignore pain, for the most part. This, however, is also a weakness. While Desmond is generally aware that 'something' happened, unless he takes the time to actually do a thorough examination or someone points it out, he is generally completely unaware of the extent of his injuries. He may fight on until he bleeds out, or continue swimming in a frozen lake until he dies of hypothermia, for example. Pain is useful in that it tells people to stop doing things. Desmond does not benefit from that information.
