Kim Hayes dropped out of high school to pursue her dream of playing bass in a shoegaze rock band that never really made it before imploding after one indie release. Nowadays, she works in an independent record store somewhere in New York City. She has a history of hedonism, a present of drug abuse and a traumatic childhood home life that she uses it all to forget about. As far as she's concerned, though, she'd be coping fine if it weren't for the Symbiote she happened to encounter one night when she was putting the garbage out.

Personality

Haze (Symbiote):
The Haze Symbiote has the same desires as most of its kind - to feed on adrenaline from its host, to consume phenethylamine, and to feed on the emotional darkness that Kim goes out of her way to suppress. It is frequently frustrated by Kim's lethargy and refusal to indulge in its desires, but tends to be placated and suppressed by Kim's drug habits, compromising on phenethylamine through consumption of candy bars. While noise causes Haze some pain like most Symbiotes, it has developed a sort of masochistic enjoyment of steady levels of the sensation through Kim's love of music.

When it's allowed to truly let loose, though, Haze becomes a wild, almost drunken and violent thing of horror that gets its kicks from inflicting chaos and fear on its victims - though its host's nature would keep it from crossing into true sadism or cold-blooded murder.

Kimberly:
Kim's urge to escape the feelings created by her childhood problems and teenage experimentation has combined with an addictive personality, leading Kim to a dependency on self-medication through drugs (including marijuana and ketamine) and immersion in music and other media. This is made worse by the Haze symbiote, which wants her to indulge in her dark thoughts and turn her internal turmoil into other peoples' external turmoil - a voice she placates through further self-medication.

Whether depressed or stoned to avoid her depression, Kim is lethargic both in personality and lifestyle. She tends to favor deodorant over the effort of a shower, never cooks, and rarely has time to make it down to the laundromat. Fortunately, the pace of working in a record store suits her, giving her more time to listen to music and only occasionally having to deal with customers.

Kim doesn't wish harm on anyone, and has a kind heart deep down. Without the influence of drugs, she is sensitive, hates conflict, and loves living things, even rescuing wasps that fly into her apartment and letting spiders and other pests live (though sloth may also have a hand there). She's pretty friendly, too - when she's cognisant of others' presence.

Powers

Environmental Protection:
The Symbiote protects Kim from asphyxiation or exposure to harmful agents in the air by filtering breathable oxygen when underwater or in the presence of harmful gases. It could probably even keep her alive in space, but she hasn't tried it yet; she isn't that kind of space cadet.

Healing Factor:
At the level of bonding that Kim and Haze share, the Symbiote allows her to regenerate minor injuries within several minutes, while more extreme injuries that would normally be permanent can be healed over the course of weeks.

Mental Redoubt:
Like other Symbiote hosts, Haze is two minds in one, and the conflicting nature of a space monster cohabiting with the traumatized psyche of a drug-addled pacifist means that penetrating her defenses is difficult and navigating once inside likely even harder.

Protean:
The Haze Symbiote, as with most of its kind, presents as a shifting mass of biomass that can grow and reform into various shapes and sizes, forming weapons of biomass, tendrils for grasping and reach, or even growing to engulf other things entirely. It can change shape and colour to blend into its surroundings, though it is more noticeable when moving.

Super Strength:
The Haze Symbiote boosts Kim's strength to superhuman levels. However, due to her personal lack of athleticism and refusal to feed it as well as it would prefer, she's currently only capable of lifting about five tons, putting her on the weak side of Symbiote hosts.

Toughness:
While Kim is not particularly tough in her own right, the Haze Symbiote's durable biomass protects Kim from harm, capable of completely stopping most small arms fire and providing enough resilience to withstand superhuman levels of harm. It also makes her all but impervious to pain due to assimilation of narcotic chemicals.

Toxicity:
Somewhat unique among Symbiotes, Haze secretes a chemical cocktail assimilated and developed from various intoxicating substances consumed by Kim over time. This creates a disturbing haze around the Symbiote when on display, and prolonged exposure to the chemical through inhalation (or relatively short-term exposure to the concentrated levels present in Symbiote's biomass or breath) can cause the average organic life form to experience a narcotic effect that induces lethargy and altered states of perception.

Skills

Combat:
Kim has essentially no training in combat. Haze has a certain amount of animal instinct for battle, but has a lot of room to grow in regard to actual technique or experience.

Gamer:
Kim spends a lot of time gaming and is actually something of a prodigy at video games - though the reflexes that she's developed serve as little more than gaming muscle memory due to the near-perpetual state of lethargy she finds herself in.

Musician:
Kim has the skill to be a professional bassist, and she's a decent singer besides, but her musical ambitions have largely been quashed, with Kim preferring to enjoy others' music instead. She has a decent breadth of knowledge of musical acts and depth of knowledge about her favourites.

Resources

Apartment:
Kim shares an apartment in New York City with her roommate October, former lead vocalist of their shoegaze band 'Clockwork Meow Meow,' and any number of vermin at any given time. Her job provides just enough income to pay her half of the rent, her food, and - through favors and experienced negotiation - her drug habit.

Volkswagen:
When Clockwork Meow Meow disbanded, Kim ended up stuck with the van - a depressingly rusted-out classic Volkswagen that somehow still runs. It manages not to be worth stealing in spite of its classic status, between the inescapable smell of marijuana and the thoroughly rusted exterior.

Weaknesses

Addiction:
Kim has a psychological dependency on various narcotic substances to cope with her negative thoughts and to keep the influence of Haze at bay. Without access to narcotics, she would be forced to confront her inner turmoil - or turn to Haze for her dopamine fix. And Haze wouldn't enable her for free...

Emotional Sensitivity:
Without her suppressive self-medication, Kim is emotionally sensitive and susceptible to low moods, feelings of worthlessness, fear and anxiety.

Fire and Heat:
The Haze Symbiote, like others of its kind, is extremely susceptible to fire and intense heat, even moreso than most organic things are. It has a natural fear of this danger, and Kim, being flammable herself, is disinclined to challenge that fear.

October:
Kim's best friend and secret blonde crush, October Everhart is every bit as grunge as Kim. October may have the same recreational tendencies, but isn't dependent in the same way as Kim is. Kim would trust October with anything - except, maybe, the truth about their third roommate.

Sound:
Powerful sonic vibrations are always dangerous to Symbiotes, but the Haze Symbiote has developed a greater tolerance than typical for its species due to its bond with a bona fide audiophile and bassist. It has actually developed something of a masochistic enjoyment of loud noise - but masochism won't stop the Symbiote from actually being harmed; extreme noise will still damage the Haze Symbiote and eventually force it to break down, leaving its host vulnerable.

Split Mind:
When not in a truce of mutual stupor, Haze and Kim are at odds with each other - the former intent on driving the latter to adrenaline-inducing action, the latter preferring to leave such action to the domain of video games. Haze is always looking for a good opportunity to coax Kim into letting it out - and most likely to succeed when self-preservation (or maybe even the preservation of others) is tested.
