The Omrut Beacon was an Oan scientific colony ship that landed on Earth 50,000 years ago. The area around Earth was of significant interest to the Oans due to the complex spatial topography and densely interwoven magical forces woven into the fabric of reality. The superstructure of magical ley lines created a complex interconnected web of synapses that had a rudimentary intelligence. Oans struck a deal with the Elder Gods living in the magesphere to help coax the nascent Demiurge to life so they could produce a magically-potent civilization to counter the rising Kryptonian Hegemony.

The Oans conducted a great deal of research on many different topics. They created a biological catalyst designed to trigger a metagenetic crisis in the dominant life form on the planet as a failsafe if the Asgard Protocol failed. They were in possession of the Space Stone, one of the mythic Infinity Stones, and were studying it to see if it could be integrated into the power network of the repository of their pooled force of Willpower.

In the process of taming the Demiurge the Oans created a stable matrix to help focus the energies of that entity. The Cosmic Cube function much akin to the Power Rings that the Oans themselves used; allowing the user to focus their willpower to fundamentally alter reality itself. A failsafe was created that limited the use of the device to once per lifeform for non-Oans.

Kryptonian battlemasters discovered the location of the Omrut Beacon and attacked the colony. Even with the limitless energies at their disposal the Oans were unable to stop the assault and the Kryptonians slaughtered the researchers. Only a last-ditch effort destroyed them with a massive onslaught of radiation that killed off life for a hundred miles around the ship, forming what would be later known as the Siberian Exclusion Zone.
