Mary, Harry and Joe
Date of Scene: 30 October 2021
Location: The Coffee Bean
Synopsis: When Harry met Mary and was absolutely NOT hitting on her.
Cast of Characters: Mary Bromfield, Harry Jordan

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary Marvel. The World's Mightiest Woman.

And Employee of the Month at the Coffee Bean. But only when she has to deal with REAL problems. Like the poisonous coffee Nazis and carnivorous Soccer-Mom Karens. And that is the job Mary Bromfield has to tackle.

Right now, it's a slow later afternoon. Most of the students are at home, and there are only a few tables occupied by students who need the Wi-Fi.

She smiles as someone walks in, the bell jingling. "Welcome to the Coffee Bean, how may I help you?"

Harry Jordan has posed:
Harry Jordan: herordan :hero in the the big city!

Not.

Wannabe hero, in need of some tutoring. This is not apparent. He entered through the door, not a monitor or phone. That usually gets him yelled at. It does save on cab fare. He spent his Saturday touring various and sundry superhero sites. He returns the smile, genuinely and says, "Thank you. I need an apartment... probably in Staten Island... I don't think you can help me with that but I would love a cup of that sea salt and caramel coffee, large, one sugar, a splash of almond milk." He sticks a hand out and says, "I'm Harry," marking him as an out of towner even more plainly than his Metropolitan accent and Metropolis Meteors sweatshirt.

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary smiles warmly. Boy, if she had a nickel for every time customers asked for stuff like winning lottery tickets...

"Large coffee, sugar, almond milk. $3.34, please, and if you have one of our rewards cards, I can punch that for you."

Harry Jordan has posed:
Harry Jordan lets his hand hang for a moment and then reaches in his jacket pocket for the money, handing the barista a five. People in New York were not nearly as friendly as those in Metropolis. Way better than Gothamites though. He nods to her and grabs a seat on a couch. At least she can call him bu name for his order.

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary places the order, and hands it off to Stacy to make the coffee. She was looking almost DANGEROUSLY bored.

She leaned forweard, over the counter. No other customers, for the moment.
"So...are you new in town, or relatively new? You don't sound like a New Yorker." She pauses, then adds, "We get a lot of supertypes in here. Yesterday it was some woman in magical armor. But the night before, it was someone doing a CandyGram delivery. It's not like you don't see supertypes all the time in New York...have you seen any yet?"

Harry Jordan has posed:
Harry Jordan gets up and walks over to the counter, sensing the bored mood. He sits on a stool across from her.

"I lived a couple places but mainly around Metropolis I guess. I haven't seen any super types yet. Maybe I should come back here. No I intend on starting school here in Happy Harbor. Seems like a nice place. Though, I lost a year of school due to... family issues. I might just get my GED and pick up with college next year." He realizes he's talking too much.

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary nods. "I hear you. I'm getting all the basic courses out of the way first, but the nursing program at ESU isn't what I hoped it would be. I was actually thinking of seeing how well I would do at Metropolis U. They have an accredited program..."

She stops as Stacy gives her the cup, and she beckons to Harry. "Ready to go. Hope we did it the way you like it..."

Harry Jordan has posed:
Harry Jordan takes the cup, thanks Stacy and says, "I think I'll drink it here for a bit. You're the friendliest person I met here so far. I mean if that's okay?" He samples the coffee and sighs. "This is really good. I tried Bean of Doom and... cats all over the flipping place. Not for me. But please go on...?" ge eyes catch the Employee of the month award. "Mary!" He smiles again.

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary chuckles. "Do something well, and people come back. And we seem to have a bit of a lull at the moment, so I don't mind. And yes, my name is Mary. Stacy made your drink, so if you want to throw something in the tip jar, I'll make sure she gets it." Mary hands Harry his change with a pleasant smile. "Many latte returns." She winked.

Harry Jordan has posed:
Harry Jordan throws his change from the five in the jar. "You have to encourage people to do their best. I hope that's sufficient. So anyway... you were looking into nursing?" He leans forward a little in turn sipping the coffee and eyeing the cookies. He glances at the door but no supers appear. Then back to Mary.

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary nods. "I think I wanted to be a nurse since I was 12. I don't think I could be a full doctor, but a nurse...? Yes. I could do that."
She smiles wistfully. "It sounds nice. Having a job where you help people all day."

Harry Jordan has posed:
Harry Jordan nods and says, "Nurses are great! I bet you'd make a good one. May I ask you a question? Stacy too if she wants? Is it hard to get dates, working her? Because usually to test the waters -see how you click a guy will say, 'Want to go for a cup of coffee?' Sorry, these ideas just come to me... " He quickly takes another drink to shut up.

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary chuckles. "Harry, I'll give you a little advice. It's kinda poor manners to ask someone out while they are working, especially if you don't know them that well. Gives the impression that their tip will depend on whether they say yes or no."
Then she holds up a finger. "However...if you are a good customer and you bring in a date, we will hype you up like there's no tomorrow. Great speedy service, you look good in front of your date...and hopefully we get a good tip when you do."

Harry Jordan has posed:
Harry Jordan sets the coffee down and looks very serious. "Firstly, I gave you the dang tip already. Secondly, I am just making small talk. I hardly know you. Just because you're the employee of the month doesn't make me enchanted to date you. Besides, the woman in the armor might come in and SWEEP me away." He makes a sweeping gesture that ends with him pointing at the cookies. "Let me have one of those please, the giant oatmeal raisin."

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary nods, walking over to the case and taking a food-handler's glove to pick up the cookie, placing it on a paper plate. "That'll be $2...and I'm a little bit jaded, so please don't take offense. Get my fair share of people who confuse manners for flirting."

Harry Jordan has posed:
Harry Jordan accepts the cookie and pays for it, throwing another dollar in it for good measure. "Anyway, I might've been talking about Stacy. She makes a fine cup of coffee. And no offense taken." He waves to Stacy, grinning now.

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary snickers. "Stacy, I think he's sweet on you."
Stacy peered over the espresso machine. "He's got...potential. Kinda cute."
Mary smiles to Harry. "See? Potential."
Stacy smiles, but in a sly way as she sizes Harry up...and Harry gets the sense he's being sized up for caloric content.

Harry Jordan has posed:
"I really was just making small talk," Harry thinks. How did he get into this?

You opened your mouth --dummy. He ponders a quick change and teleport out. He could say there's a fire... no lying is wrong and that is showing off. He picks up the cookie and says, "I should get back to looking for a place. It was nice meeting you, Mary... Stacy." He gets up to leave.

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Stacy waves. "Don't be a stranger, Harry."

After Harry leaves, Mary looks to Stacy. "I thought you were over guys ever since you caught Matt in flagrante dilecto."

"He...he WAS cute."

Mary shook her head sadly. "Sheesh..."
