Planet Xandar is the seat of government of the Xandarian Republic. This is a relatively small galactic empire that occupies a few adjacent star systems in the Andromeda Galaxy. Most denizens of the Andromeda Galaxy know Xandar to be a plant-spanning ecumenopolis and a near-eudaimonic society on a lush and beautiful garden planet.

Xandar is an M-class planet that can comfortably sustain most forms of common, carbon-based life. Society and government are regulated by the Xandarian Worldmind, an AI gestalt built on the brains of millions of Xandarians stretching back into the depths of history. The most well-known aspect of Xandar culture is the Nova Corps, an inter-galactic law enforcement organization that promotes de-escalation, deals with rogue states and war crimes, and focuses on preventing harm to civilians during times of war.

Recent History

The Republic of Xandar has existed in its current form for around 400,000 years. Ongoing pressure from The Brood, combined with their proximity to the Kree Empire, has encouraged Xandar to focus efforts on building up their dozen-odd settled worlds into technologically advanced paradise. The peace treaty with the Kree Empire was based upon a mutual fear of the Brood, but after the annihilation of that species, tensions between the two civilizations are mounting again.

In 2003, the luphomoid known as Zorr led a massive attack force against Xandar. Xandar itself was destroyed and the Nova Corps eliminated almost to a man. The government of the Xandarian Republic was shattered. Only a few cities survived, thanks to the intervention of The Watcher.

The last survivor was Rhomann Dey, the former Nova Prime. He sacrificed his life to transport the Xandarian Worldmind to Uatu's safe haven, and used the last of his power to seek out a new wielder of the Nova Force: Richard Rider.

Richard became the new Nova Prime and was empowered by the Nova Force. His adventures in space led to him finally discovering the Xandarian Worldmind in the year 2005. Richard agreed to meld with the Worldmind, joining the gestalt consciousness of millions of Xandarian minds stored in the AI's matrix. With the aid of the Worldmind, Richard was able to reach through time and move Xandar out of the way just before Zorr obliterated it. This restored Xandar back to the universe will all the citizenry alive and well. Uatu returned the cities he had taken custody of and Xandar once again became a bright spot of order and hope in the galaxy.
