A Cold Case Renewed
Date of Scene: 06 May 2024
Location: Mutant Town Community Center
Synopsis: The NYPD does a small 'press conference' on a cold case that has been reopened and effects the Mutant community of Bushwick.
Cast of Characters: Micola Maximoff, Emma Frost, Doreen Green, Illyana Rasputina, Thor

Micola Maximoff has posed:
The NYPD had reopened an almost 20 year old cold case given a few recent situations. They had decided that holding a conference and community outreach to their fellows in Bushwick was a very good place to start.

They had invited the community out and had a ton of information to give out and there was going to be things that were discussed that might be sensitive.

Detective Andreas Stanton is standing up towards the front in the little community room that they had taken over for this meeting. There are a lot more people than they expected! "If everyone can settle in we'll get started. I wanted to thank everyone for coming out this evening." the older man states as he looks over those in attendance.

Emma Frost has posed:
Emma's here more for little more than morbid curiousity. Given the open invitation and some level of owing at least a few favors, this is hopefully part of covering her due. So she arrives, in a rather laid back outfit for once, looking rather thoughtful. Ah well, at least it's not a Murder Mystery Dinner. She's been to a few too many of those for someone fundraising that thinks they're a creative genius.

She follows in after some of the others, resisting the temptation to read the Detective's mind.

Doreen Green has posed:
Doreen Green is technically, legally distinct from a mutant (we won't go into details of that kerfluffle) but she is still mutant adjacent, friend to several and ally of the cause. That and she's seen enough true crime documentories to know they tend to not reopen cold cases unless there's some distinct chance of new information. Between the two and the open invite more than enough to get a curious Squirrel Girl amongst the crowd gathered, with the everpresent Tippy-Toe sitting on one shoulder.

Illyana Rasputina has posed:
Now what use is a PoliSci degree holder in a cold case as old as she is, minus a few years? When the degree holder is a sorceress of Illyana's evil talents, then possibly something useful. The pale blonde in her t-shirt and black leather pants doesn't look like anyone professional. That's down to Emma.

Even laid back. She upnods to Emma, as one does. Doreen gets that look if acknowledgement, though the squirrels are... plentiful. Interesting.
"We can." She stalks to a chair and just about pours herself into it, cause the pants don't let her so much else.

Thor has posed:
This is ... the wrong place. Thor is entirely not in the correct room. Not at all.

There is another room where Thor was /supposed/ to be, for a different meeting about assisting with some sort of helicopter rescue, but directions were given (and confused) by Thor, and now he's come into this particular community room instead. Thor is unaware of the issue.

And so that is how Thor comes in through the back, up a row a few seats, and sits down (carefully, poor little chair), with a big smile and a manilla folder resting on one large thigh. And, of course, gets stared at. (Probably mainly by the people behind him that can no longer see).

Thor is 'undercover' in terms of being in ordinary clothes, and a great hat he borrowed from Steve. It is weathered and gray. ...And zero people are fooled. Thor takes any confused looks as that it's relatively successful, at least for now. He gives the person next to him a natural smile and thumbs up -- Doreen. And then a second thumbs-up for her squirrel, treated with respect, as if it were a raven.

Thor's here to meet about that helicopter thing, ready to go.

Micola Maximoff has posed:
Detective Andreas is looking over those in attendance, some are familiar faces, others are not. Then there is Thor's big self in the back trying to be 'under cover'. It is an odd mix to see all of these people come together. Plus there is a very blue haired woman sitting at the end of the table he's talking behind.

"To not make this a long and arduous meeting. About twenty years ago we had a string of murders that happened. More than half of them were people that later were found out to be Mutant in origins. We are still trying to see if we can determine if the other victims that were find were as well. The cases eventually went cold and we were never able to find who the killer was." he frowns.

"We have reason to believe that there is either a copy cat of this persons crimes that is starting up or that the original perpetrator has returned." he tells the room.

It definitely gets some murmurs and shocked looks!

"We've gathered names, dates and pictures of the victims that were known to frequent the area prior to their death. We are asking that the community help us in trying to take some of these photos and information and ask their fellows if they remember anything." he states.

Emma Frost has posed:
Emma Frost would nod thoughtfully, "Post morterm genetic testing? You'd have to profile all the ones in a general area over a time period." There were a lot of murders in New YOrk twenty years ago. Spreading out to locate all the ones that might fit the pattern in cold storage might not be possible - much less with enough forensics detail to make a connection.

Shew ould glance over to Illyana over and then nod at the 'copycat' descriptor and hmm. "It could be either. I'd presume that given the somewhat.. Lower key reputation of the killer that if it was a copycat they would be going out of their way to advertise it. Some sort of manifesto, a narrative.. A proclamation. A reason for continuing the work. So where is that inflection of the narrative?"

Doreen Green has posed:
Doreen Green smiles back and gives Thor a thumbs up. "Nice hat." He's not fooling anyone, but she's being supportive and playing along. Even if it is a reminder of why she doesn't bother with secret identities. Seriously, the four foot fluffy tail would be even harder to conceal than Thor's Asgardian buffness.

Then the Detective speaks up to get down to business and she settles in. While listening she pulls out her smartphone, complete with acorn pattern bearing case, and opens a text app to take notes.

She also frowns a little. Only discovered to be Mutants long after the fact? It almost sounds like a conspiration to conceal what the victims were.... Curiouser and curiouser.

She tap-tap-taps at the text app, while Tippy-Toe looks over her shoulder.

Illyana Rasputina has posed:
Currently masquerading as a mostly normal human instead of the younger Lord of Hell, Illyana crosses one leg over the other at the knee. Her sensibly shiny heel swings an arc with regularity enough to serve as a metronome, if anyone cares to count 4 beats on the bar, a la something in the cadence of the Florence + the Machine.

Her arm jams into the uncomfortable back of the chair, twisting her around to consider the detective and his audience of Bushwick residents that aren't living in a bottle this time around. Why yes, she does look like one of those pesky heroes who broke the enchantment. Her crooked smirk rises a little spotting the great floppy hat and then sweeps a look away from Thor to the others behind and around him.

"What makes you think 'copycat,' mm?" she asks, pitching that smoky voice heavy with a Russian accent across the disturbed conversation. Emma's asked the smart questions, so she threads her fingers around her knee and pulls back. Something's said softer to the blonde, her eyes rolled for icy drama. Why not?

Thor has posed:
Thor is ready for the briefing (well, /a/ briefing), though he doesn't open his folder yet, simply rests his hands across it, and looks attentive. Even as the meeting is talking about murders, Thor takes in everything being said. And really, he doesn't mind anyway. This is still a heroic ask, that murders are happening, and he frowns.

"How many?" Thor asks, then. "How many new victims?" he clarifies. If anyone was confused about that being Thor, his big voice would seal the deal on it being Thor, anyway.

Still, he DOES want to know the victim count: The scale of it will be drastically different if it is two, or hundreds. He also has a question about how the helicopters are involved, but he'll hold that for now. It's possible the detective just is getting to that, and Thor doesn't want to jump to the end of a story. That's not how the best sagas are told, after all.

Micola Maximoff has posed:
"That's why I have a consultant that can talk to ghosts if it comes down to it." Detective Andreas states with a straight face.

"Yeah but with this time period it is hard to glean anything." Micola states with a frown. Then the blue haired woman goes back to being quiet and putting notes together.

"We've found four new cases with the same markings as the victims from the past. I don't want to spread publicly what they are as that might give others ideas to frame another. But these markings are different. Done by opposite hands and things of that nature." he explains.

Myself and my partner are going to be around for the next few days speaking with those that were around twenty years ago or those that might have connections to the new cases and see if we might get a few steps closer to putting together a profile for this killer." he adds. "So if anyone would like to talk we are at your disposal. Or if you'd like to take flyers and help to pass them out that is also appreciated." the detective states.

Emma Frost has posed:
Emma Frost would take her attention over to Illyana, and then speak casually, "I don't think that's as much of an issue if need be." The joy of having the Sorceress Supreme present and available. Turning to the detective speaking. "That rather does make my initial thought sound quite contrary now." She would quip over then and go to consider over. "And.. Take fliers?"

She would just look over at the detective. "I'm sure there are far better ways to handle things and to get responses. Social media will reach a much wider audience and allow easier contact. Otherwise you risk only getting those that have seen it on milk cartons going to the nearest phone booth." The sarcasm, it hurts.

Doreen Green has posed:
Doreen Green taps a finger tip against her chin thoughtfully. So this could be a successor, or an imitator, if they're not exactly the same.

Not reassuring either way.

"We'll have to tell the rest of the Nuts and Boots Army to keep their eyes open for anything," she murmurs mainly to Tippy-Toe on her shoulder. Squirrels are like pidgeons -- they're everywhere in the city. Never know when they might see or hear something.

Illyana Rasputina has posed:
"Does your army," and yes, Illyana asks this in all seriousness, "know where this took place? More helpful to have a location, detective."

She doesn't help herself to a flier unless someone hands them out, perfectly comfortable on that unsuitable chair, torquing a little further to listen to the conversation at large. She can't very well do that facing forward, ignoring the other speakers.

"Two locations would give an idea what happened. I am sure that goes against protocol but we do things differently in Bushwick." She might as well have said Mother Russia. "It can help, da?"

Thor has posed:
Thor isn't stupid, he's just confused. He's picked up that he might be in a meeting he didn't expect to be in. He's opened his folder and it definitely seems entirely unrelated in information. Still, people being murdered by someone that was not caught in the past? Also worthy of notice! Thor isn't running off to the other meeting - at least not yet.

Thor stands, to head up to the front to take some flyers, stacking them under his folder. Thor is good at carrying heavy things. Flyers, check. He'll take them to the Avengers base, at the very least!

Micola Maximoff has posed:
"There are those that don't have social media or internet connections, ma'am." Detective Andreas states with a very apologetic look to Emma. Like it is /his/ fault that they don't have it.

"We will be taking to social media as well. I just want to make sure that all of our bases are covered when it comes to the forms of media." he reassures everyone.

"We have a few locations listed in our information that is public and we'll share those with whoever would like it. We here at the precinct know that stuff is done differently and we want to respect that as much as we can while still doing our jobs." he states. "For now we're going to let people take this information with them and for whoever wants me to write down or send locations I can. There are three numbers on the information, first is mine, second is my partner Kevin McNulty and the third is for our consultant that would be Mrs. Maximoff." he points to the blue haired woman. "Have a good night all and hopefully we can work together to bring this individual in." he closes out the meeting on that.

When Thor comes to take some flyers there is a look up to him from Micola and she just smiles at him, "Did you borrow that hat from Cap?" she asks him in a whisper.

Emma Frost has posed:
Emma Frost would glance over at the Detective, "Oh, yes, I'm aware. But putting up fliers is going to be far less time efficient and will get far less response rates. There have been a few studies done on it. You're better off putting the face on milk cartons." Emma would ntoe idly and in light mausement.

"But do forgive me. I'm sure that every possible way must be taken to gather information."

Doreen Green has posed:
"Tippy, grab some fliers for us would you?" The pink-bowed squirrel salutes and hopes down from Doreen's shoulder. She scurries under various chairs and legs to get to the front and climbs up onto the table. Chitters something at the officers, grabs a few brochures in her mouth, and climbs down to scurry back to Doreen. With the info on hand they can ask around next time they're on patrol.

Illyana Rasputina has posed:
Illyana shrugs her shoulder and sits up somewhat straighter, making note of McNulty, Micola, and whatever passes for some random old guy in the crowd. A flick of her wrist idly dispels her bangs from her face, pushing the longer trailing pieces behind her ears. The rest of that fringe isn't going anywhere, enviably thick and long.

"Fetch a paper?" Is that a request or a suggestion to Emma? Who knows.

Thor has posed:
"Yes; it turns out both of us have large heads," Thor answers Micola evenly. He then leans in to stage-whisper to her, with hope: "....Which room is number seven?"

Because yes, he will help here, but also, well. He's supposed to escort a helicopter, and they might be wondering where he is!
