Following the start of the Common Era (CE), the harmony of many mortal civilizations began to shift. The rise of Judiasm, Islam, and Christianity in the Middle East shifted human worship away from the New Gods and towards monotheistic worship of a Creator. In Asia, Neo-Confucianism and Buddhism were supplanting older mystical traditions steeped in worship of the Heavenly Court of the East and the Kami. Human population levels were increasing at a rapid pace, and continuing to do so exponentially every decade.

Competition for harmony and therefore, souls, became more aggressive between the various demesnes of the New Gods. A state of detente lead to a 'cold war', and the primarchs sent their avatars and children into the world to attempt to make as many converts as possible.

Near 1000 CE, the worlds of Yggdrasil were poised to go to all-out war. Thousands of mortals perished and the Gods did battle all over the World Tree, seeking to conquer new realms or deny them to the other factions. The battles raged across the world between the major powers. Gaea attempted to intervene, but was unsuccessful in negotiating peace.

The wily Morgana Le Fay took advantage of the conflict to unleash her own deep plans. As Gaea threatened to unleash Atum, the God-Killer, Morgana took advantage of various cosmological alignments to bring forth a darker evil still: Chthon, the ancient and malevolent brother of Gaea. At the 11th hour, Morgana was on the brink of success, and her first intention was to unleash the ancient malfeasance on Outerworld. Merlyn and his allies, the Knights of The Round Table, rushed to prevent Morgana from summoning the monster. Their success narrowly prevented Chthon from overtaking Gaea as the primary custodian of the Demiurge. Realizing how perilously close they had come to the annihilation of the World Tree, the Patriarchs convened an assembly and agreed that the warring for the souls of humanity was to cease. The time of the New Gods was waning as humanity's future waxed bright once more.
