A young woman of manners and poise. Clara tends to show up whenever ancient relics are in danger. Sometimes defender, sometimes thief, she is a dedicated operative on the frontlines, protecting the history of humanity with her supernatural powers and specialized training.

Timeline:
2004/05/08 - Clara was born as part of The Conservatory's project Saraswati. This project aims to create a class of supernatural defenders as frontline fighters, devoting their lives to the protection of significant artifacts. Her days were spent in a nursery that is not so different from any other, save for its emphasis on rapid improvement of her intellectual and physical capabilities. She is intentionally subjected to increasing levels of stress.

2008/05/08 - Clara is moved from the nursery to live with a new caretaker, a woman she knows only as the Governess. The Governess accelerates the education and stress regiments, pushing her charge towards the edge of her limits.

2009/08/25 - The aim of the Conservatory is achieved, and Clara has a mental breakdown. In this state, they can expose her to a magical tome that infuses her with supernatural powers. Clara acquires the power of Paper Mastery, able to manipulate the material in a variety of ways. This power also provides a consequence, or it is the PTSD of her breakdown, as Clara experiences vivid nightmares that leave her screaming and trembling. Only the Governess can calm her and make her feel safe after these occur.

2009/09/15 - Clara regains the power of speech and resumes work with the Governess. Her regiment of training accelerates (which now includes the control of her supernatural powers), but all signs of stress under the load vanish. Clara demonstrates an eidetic memory from this point forward. She also develops a savant-like comprehension of mathematics, history, geography, physics, chemistry, and music. Her expression of emotions is diminished, but she retains her ability to relate to others socially. To help her fit into proper culture, Clara is taught how to carry herself as a proper lady.

2015/05/30 - Project Saraswati's results become clear. Of the 21 children who were subjected to the intense education, only Clara and two others survive. While the other two survivors gained the powers of paper mastery, their strength is less, and their minds were permanently damaged. Clara sees them only rarely after they "fell ill". They have the personalities of toddlers and must always be looked after.

2017/12/18 - The Conservatory considers Clara's primary education complete. Her physical education continues to accelerate. Her training in martial arts focuses on the pragmatic, which is to say on how to swiftly disable or remove obstacles on her missions. As hard as they push her supernatural powers, she never shows signs of lasting fatigue. There is considerable interest in forcing her to improve the limits of her powers.

2019/06/06 - Clara is sent on her first mission, during which she enters a revolutionary warzone to retrieve three sacred texts. She is successful and is praised for her efficient operations.

2020-2022 - Clara undertakes many more missions, retrieving scrolls, books, and artwork. Her targets include weak governments judged unfit to protect these artifacts and private collectors viewed as too ignorant to appreciate what they own. There are also just as many times when Clara is sent to foil thefts from private collectors and wealthy museums.

2023/11/08 - The Governess and Clara settle in Gotham. The Conservatory provides her with a luxury apartment. She is said to be the daughter of a wealthy London family. She is staying in Gotham to study American architecture and geology. Further, the Governess says she is to find a suitable husband. The apartment serves as a base of operations for Clara's support of the western branch of the Conservatory.

Personality

Fastidious:
Clara's work involves overcoming security systems, navigating dangerous situations, and protecting priceless artifacts with her life. She pays attention to every detail. This focus on details spills over into her personal life.

Genteel:
Due to her upbringing, Clara demonstrates Victorian etiquette. Her manners are impeccable.

Kind:
Provided she is not on a mission, Clara shows kindness, mercy, and even affection. She is charitable and avoids causing unnecessary harm when doing her work. When she is on a mission, however, a calculus is made and preserving the most treasured history of humanity generally comes first.

Modest:
While she is aware of her capabilities, Clara is modest in her words and actions. She takes pride in her mission, but never boasts or calls attention to her skills or actions.

Patient:
Clara is capable of waiting. Provided what she values is not in immediate danger, the paper master will fall back on her training, watching, waiting, and seizing her opportunity once it arises.

Character Sheet

Powers

Flight:
Using paper wings or a golem, Clara can fly. This flight moves no faster than a natural bird's flight (up to 70 mph). She can dive to provide a brief but considerable boost of speed, as well. She cannot move faster than human terminal velocity (about 120 mph) and lift a max of 300 lbs (plus herself). When carrying others, her speed is reduced to half and she cannot safely dive. She can, in a pinch, craft a kind of parachute to safely slow the fall (no maneuvering) for twice that weight in people or objects.

Golems:
Clara's paper mastery can be used to create animal forms that she can control like puppets. Their total volume/mass and range are limited by her paper mastery power. If doing more than simple actions (tackle a target, move in a direction, lift an object), her full concentration is required.

It takes two seconds of complete concentration to create these golems. Damaging their paper bodies adequatly will destroy them. They are roughly as sturdy as hardwood.

************************************ Limits ************************************

Durability: Vulnerable to fire, sonics, and water.
Quantity: Up to 20 creatures
Perception: Ink messages on a golem can be read and responded to.
Size: Up to rhinoceras size (150 cubic feet)
Speed: Based on the animal's natural speed.
Strength: Can press 500 lbs. max, proportional to size (50 lbs for 1/10 of max size, etc.)

See "+pow Clara/Paper Mastery" for more details of her paper control.

Paper Mastery:
Clara can exercise telekinetic control of paper. This includes paper-like products, such as papyrus. The more weight in paper she attempts to control, the more it drains her physically. She does not need to see paper to know it is there and manipulate it.

Should paper become wet, it leaves her control. Paper she controls can be burned. Further, sonic attacks disrupt her control (while they are active).

************************************ Limits ************************************

Range: 100 meters
Speed: Scales by weight from 2 m/s at max to 100 m/s for a card
Volume: Can create (mostly hollow) shapes of no more than 150 cubic feet
Weight: 2500 lbs

Projectiles:
Combining her telekinetic control of paper with her ability to render it as sharp as a razor, Clara can use paper to create deadly projectiles. These can penetrate clothing, flesh, and light armor (but not steel). These projectiles are limited by her paper mastery's range and maximum speed.

See "+pow Clara/Paper Mastery" for more details of her paper control.

Shields:
Clara can focus her powers to make the paper she controls as sturdy as concrete of similar volume. This allows her to create defensive barriers to protect herself and others. These are subjected to all the limitations in her paper mastery power.

See "+pow Clara/Paper Mastery" for more details of her paper control.

Skills

Academics:
Clara's education has given her a broad exposure to the sciences, history, and mathematics. Combined with the changes her supernatural experiences wrought on her mind, she could, given time, earn graduate degrees in several areas of study.

Clandestine Operations:
Clara possesses a unique set of skills that goes beyond the confines of her formal education. Trained by the enigmatic Conservatory of Antiquity, she has honed the art of infiltration and subversion, capable of navigating the intricate labyrinths of security systems. Clara's nimble fingers glide effortlessly over keyboards, bypassing firewalls, and disarming alarms. Her mind, a tapestry of algorithms and encryption, decodes the intricacies of even the most sophisticated security protocols.

Within the shadowy realm of the Conservatory, Clara is the embodiment of stealth and cunning. Her ability to crack safes and elude detection is not merely a matter of technical prowess but a testament to her commitment to the organization's mission-the preservation of historical artifacts. Whether infiltrating high-security vaults or navigating ancient chambers protected by intricate traps, Clara's finesse is a key asset in ensuring that these priceless relics are protected and kept safe from those who would exploit or destroy them.

Combat:
From her childhood, Clara has been trained in a variety of martial arts. She was also taught fencing and kendo. She is not a world class martial artist, but she is well trained and able to hold her own against street level threats. Upon gaining her powers, her training expanded to master not only mundane weaponry but also the paper her magical powers puts under her control.

Being petite and slender, Clara's training focused on turning these into strengths. She is very hard to strike and avoids situations where her lack of natural strength would become a liability. Generally, she either strikes from a great distance or surprises an opponent with her powers. Her training allows her to quickly ascertain if she is against a superior foe. She is an expert at strategic retreats and covering her tracks.

Lecturer:
Lecturer - When in front of an audience, presenting on a topic she knows well, Clara is dynamic, engaging, and expressive. Her usual shyness only returns when she leaves the stage. She likes to prepare, but this is only required if she is to lecture on a topic she is not familiar with.

Music:
As a proper lady, Clara was taught to sing and play the piano. She is an excellent pianist and prefers to play at least one hour every day. She will also sing as she plays. This activity helps center her mind before bed. She credits this with reducing her problems with nightmares from a daily matter to one that happens only once or twice a week.

Reading:
Clara can read extremely quickly. Most of the time, though, if she is enjoying a text, she will read only at a normal pace, giving her mind the chance to relish each beautiful letter, to enjoy the rapture of each word, and to bask in the glow of every sentence. For her reading is a passion and a talent. She excels at recitation, as well. Her voice is pleasing and skillfully emotive when it is expressing the written word.

Clothing:
Clara's outfits are made with internal pockets that store paper, which ensures she can defend herself when in public. If she is on a mission, the Conservatory will provide her with body armor that does not interfere with her mobility while affording her protection against mundane piercing/slashing weapons and mitigates damage from small caliber bullets.

See "+pow Clara/Paper Mastery" and "+pow Clara/Shields" for more details of her paper control and defenses.

Conservatory:
In the heart of London, shrouded in secrecy and operating from the shadows, lies a mysterious organization dedicated to safeguarding the world's cultural heritage. This clandestine group, known only as "The Conservatory of Antiquity," has taken it upon themselves to protect priceless artifacts and antiquities from being lost to humanity. With a keen sense of history and a commitment to preserving the past, the Conservatory operates discreetly, their headquarters hidden in plain sight amidst the bustling city.

The organization's members are a diverse array of scholars, archaeologists, and experts in various fields, all bound by a common goal - to ensure that the treasures of ancient civilizations are not lost to the ravages of time, war, or greed. The Conservatory of Antiquity utilizes their extensive network of contacts, cutting-edge technology, and a wealth of historical knowledge to track and retrieve artifacts at risk of being lost, stolen, or destroyed. From the enigmatic halls of Egyptian tombs to the forgotten corners of medieval castles, the Conservatory leaves no stone unturned in their quest to protect the cultural riches that connect humanity to its past.

Operating outside the purview of governments and international bodies, the Conservatory maintains an air of mystery and independence. They believe that their autonomy allows them to act swiftly and decisively, unencumbered by bureaucracy. Despite their secretive nature, whispers of their exploits have circulated among those in the know, creating an aura of intrigue around this enigmatic organization that stands as a silent guardian, ensuring that the treasures of antiquity endure for generations to come.

Governess:
Within the stately halls of a secluded estate, a woman of intellect and grace known only as the Governess took on the responsibility of preparing Clara for her duties. Her role extends beyond the conventional bounds of a teacher; she is Clara's guide through the vast realms of knowledge. Tasked with molding Clara into a woman of both erudition and refinement, the Governess imparts not only the rigors of history, mathematics, and the sciences but also the subtleties of music, song, and the intricate dance of Victorian etiquette. Beyond these topics, she also provides for Clara's more specialized education, arranging for sparring partners and tutors.

The Governess is more than just an educator-she is a devoted member of an elusive organization known as the Conservatory. Charged with the safeguarding of priceless antiquities, the Conservatory operates in the shadows, employing individuals of exceptional skill and discretion. The Governess, with her encyclopedic knowledge of history and a passion for preserving the treasures of bygone eras, plays a crucial role in the covert activities of the organization.

Despite the professional guise she wears as an instructor, the Governess harbors a genuine affection for Clara. Beyond the rigidity of lessons and the decorum of Victorian society, there exists a bond that transcends the formalities of their roles. As Clara blossoms under the Governess's tutelage, the latter finds joy not only in the acquisition of knowledge but also in witnessing the growth of a young woman whose curiosity knows no bounds. In this clandestine world of antiquities and secrets, the Governess navigates the delicate balance between duty and heartfelt care for Clara, nurturing not only her intellect but also her spirit.

Wealth:
Clara's everyday needs are provided for by the Conservatory. Further, she has access to the tools she needs (computers, internet, lockpicks, etc.) to do her job. This maintenance allows her to live as a member of the upper classes, able to make appearances and dress according to this station.

Weaknesses

Bibliophile:
The transformation into a paper master and her intense training has led Clara to obsess over reading. She has little experience having fun outside the covers of a book. She will read anything in a pinch but works that do not meet her standards may endure a scathing review written in her online journal.

Double Life:
Clara does not share her real job with others. This serves as something of a barrier between her and potential friends.

Mysterious Masters:
The Conservatory ultimately tells Clara what to do and where to go. She has never met any members of the board. Her orders all come to her from the Governess. In all her time working for the conservatory, she has only met two other paper masters, both of whom were reduced to toddler mentalities in the process of gaining their powers.

Nightmares:
Because of her transformation (or the related mental breakdown), Clara has regular nightmares (generally once or twice a week). These nightmares are vivid and leave her screaming, crying, and trembling in fear. Only the Governess can be relied upon to sooth her after these occur. While the Conservatory has considered having Clara face these fears on her own, this idea was rejected. She is too valuable an asset to risk frivolous experimentation.

Paper:
Clara needs paper to use her powers. That paper must be dry. While Clara's power limits the effect of fire, ultimately her paper is vulnerable to this. She can act to reduce the spread of fire in the paper she controls, but this ultimately forces her to reshape what she's working on, opening her to attacks as she adjusts her strategies.

Shy:
Away from the certainty of her missions or the guiding presence of the Governess, Clara is shy. Her training in small talk and etiquette has only had a slight impact on this problem. Simply put, when Clara is off script, she struggles to relate to people or express her feelings appropriately. This is painful for her as she craves company.
