John seems a vagabond. His appearance usually is a bit road worn and probably never grew out of being a street urchin. Even though he may seem worse for wear, something about him is just...intriguing.

Personality
Any Means To An End:
John Constantine is a conniving rat bastard, a conman to his core, when it suits his needs. When the need outweighs the crime, he will always side with the need. It's not that he doesn't know that he's hurting people, it's just that he weighs the benefits of doing so against the costs of not doing so. Any means to the right end, aye? The life he's led has certainly hardened him and minor infractions, did he hurt someone's wittle feelings? Sacrifice your cat to save the neighborhood, sleep with your lonely wife - or husband - and bring them comfort? Those, he never bats an eye or loses sleep over. But that isn't to say that he has no empathy and no remorse for his dastardly deeds. In fact, he carries that remorse around with him like a big old neon sign some days, for the bigger things, the conniving schemes and plans that left more pain in their wake than he's one hundred percent certain was worth the end result. He feels those moments and doubts himself right properly because of them.
Moody:
John is a deeply depressed individual in the clinical and figurative sense of the words. The highs of magic and the lows of failure often clash in his brain. When there's a fresh case or a new fight he's wildly energetic, fast on his feet, and quick-witted. When things slow down his energy turns inwards and his attitudes slip into a profound narcissistic funk where he questions his utility and place in the universe.
Roguish:
John is the definition of an anti-hero serving the idealized concept of 'a greater good'. The ends justify the means in all things. Fair fights are for suckers and John doesn't make excuses or offer forgiveness for people's stupidities or shortcomings. He lies, cheats, swindles, and steals without much compunction or remorse. Good luck getting him to refrain from smoking, too.
Character Sheet
Powers
Ageless:
Demons don't age, and John's more demonic than most men. He heals faster and is more physically durable than most mortals. Diseases burn out in his blood and mystical flames don't burn as hot on his flesh.
Astral Projection:
Constantine can project a fully realized avatar of his conscious self into the Astral Plane. This does leave his body comatose and potentially vulnerable to attack. If his connection to his body is severed, John will be forced to find alternate means to unite his spirit with his corporeal self.
Corrupted:
John's soul is a toxic and corrupted thing. He's not just been exposed to many malignant and dangerous forces; he's made decisions that pollute his very sense of being. The upshot to this is that his mind and soul are a toxic hellscape that repels possession and invasion of his person or psyche. Saying John's mind is 'in the gutter' is a gross understatement unless you're referring to an outhouse drain in Chernobyl.
Divination:
John is not a prophet or a seer. He does know many of the rituals that allow for divination, ranging from anthropomancy to consulting oneiromancers. Beyond rituals, he also knows how to consult prophets and seers, and how to ask the right questions or make the proper sacrifices they require.
Energy Projection:
Slinging around the raw power of nature is very much not John's signature style, but there's nothing saying this particular hedge wizard can't do it. Heat and cold, lightning and force, sound and fury-- John can fight with the elements like a mystical gunslinger if the occassion calls. His personal preference is for fire and flame for its purifying elements. Those darker portions of his soul allow John to infuse his magics with the heat and brimstone of hellfire itself when occasion calls.
Illusionist:
One of John's signature talents is the use of illusions and magics of a deceptive nature. He can manifest true illusions that are virtually indistinguishable from reality, or enact subtle stratagems that merely influence the mind of a single individual. Those individuals who are very perceptive or who can sense magical energies are much more likely to sense the presence of an illusion or see through it entirely.
Magic:
John Constantine's got two reputations when it comes to magic. One is as a petty hedge-wizard without a great deal of internal power or focus. The other is as a dangerously competent and expert magus with a diverse and well-established skillset. As with all things with John, the truth is somewhere in the middle. He doesn't have the raw natural talent that comes to some magi, who can rearranged reality to suit their whims with nothing more than force of will or a few words spoken in reverse. When it comes to ritual magic, John's knowledge is remarkable. Between the magic knicknacks up his sleeve and a talent for knowing the shortcuts to magical power, John can easily keep up with young and potent magi and old Powers alike.
Spirit Ward:
There are rules to all things, and most supernatural creatures are beholden to their own set of them. John knows the proper incantations to bind, seal, bar, or banish many creatures and spirits. Exorcisms are his particular expertise. He knows the ways that are a ritual for very specific types of demons and situations.
Summoner:
There are rituals and procedures for calling, contacting, and binding almost every creature in existence. There are few of those rituals John doesn't know, and the ones he hasn't seen he can either learn, suss out, or fake his way through.
Synchronicity:
The signature talent of the family of magi known as 'The Laughing Magicians'. This rare talent is known almost exclusively to the antecedents of the Constantine family. Synchronicity reverberates back and forth through time and space. John can ride these waves but cannot control them. It appeals to his subconscious in the form of hunches and dreams. A left turn instead of a right that leads him to find an old friend. Missing a flight only to discover it had crashed upon takeoff. For John, even a sudden urge to pull into a pub for a drink can produce a chance meeting that may change the world. Synchronicity even balances out the scales when curses of ill fortune target John, turning malicious intent back on the target three-fold.
Skills
Con Artist:
There are few hustlers and chiselers alive or dead that are better than John Constantine. It doesn't matter if it's sleight of hand or bluffing his immortal soul against the roll of the bones. He's charismatic and smooth-talking. His skill with half-truths and evasiveness are formidable and often confound someone's truth-sense so thoroughly that when he does tell a lie, it sails right past them.
All of this applies to skill at dice and cards. He might lose a few hands here and there, but John's THE master of the long con. In his words: 'The house always wins'.
Dirty Fighting:
Despite being of average mortal strength, John is a scrappy brawler, willing to use any means necessary to win a fight. He employs dirty tactics like eye gouges, groin kicks, and biting to gain the upper hand, often catching his opponents off guard with his unpredictable and ruthless style that reflects his willingness to do whatever it takes to survive, even if it means fighting dirty.
Escapology:
Getting tied up is an occupational hazard when your job is nosing into other people's business. Constantine can wriggle out of most restraints with surprising little effort and pick handcuff locks with a paper clip. Even without his magic he knows how to open deadbolts and even crack common mechanical safes. When it comes to magical bindings his skill is no less effective or tenacious. No one can keep Constantine in a cage forever.
Multilingual:
John has a limited understanding of several dead languages used in ritual magic making, notably Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, and Egyptian. His fluency mostly revolves around their classical use in mystical ritual work. Of modern languages he knows a smattering of Afrikaans, some useful phrases in Farsi, and a little conversational Cantonese, and a general sort of base conversationalism in French and German. Constantine is perfectly conversant in Lower Enochian, the corrupt and bastardized tongue commonly spoken by demons in Hell.
Musician:
John's years as a rockstar magus coincided being a literal rock star. He was the frontman for 'Mucous Membrane', a band in Britain's underground punk scene. They never made it out of basement gigs and dive bars, but John does remain a capable singer and he can play a little electric guitar besides.
Occult:
There are thousands of different systems of magic in this world and beyond. Traditions of mysticism and shaman ritual; the petty weavings of hedge wizards and the mighty workings of long-dead magi of Atlantis. There are taxonomical differences between the demons of the Seventh Circle and of the Fifth. Ways to entreaty a boggun or make a deal with the fae. There are masters of far realms who stand above even the gods and ancient old things that slumber in the Void between creation. John is a living repository of knowledge for all these things, and what he doesn't know, he can fast find out.
Resources
Daughter:
Meggan and John Constantine have one child together, a daughter named Ceci. Ceci shares a number of gifts from her parents' formidable heritage. She has precocious intelligence well beyond her young age. She can float and fly up to an adult's jogging speed. Acute sensitivity to magic and some capacity to crudely direct synchronicity are her birthright as a Laughing Magician, though she still needs extensive practice to safely cast spells. Her parents are ferociously protective and lovingly exasperated with her by turns. When not at home in the House of Mystery, she usually spends her time with other sorcerers in Kamar-Taj.
Demon Blood:
John's blood has become infected with hellfire, the stuff of the lower realms. It's partially a side effect of the failed machinations of the demon Nergal, one of his oldest foes. John also isn't above putting boots to succubi and other creatures of the lower realms. His blood is a mild acid and extremely toxic for most entities that feed on such things, including vampires. It also protects him from a great deal of the toxic feedback that can come with dabbling with corrupted magical energies, such as those found in Hell or other ruinous dimensions.
House of Mystery:
John is the current caretaker of the House of Mystery. This ancient abode of the First Murderer exists somewhat perpendicular to spacetime. It's a repository of many formidable magical objects and relics, and there are prisons and warded cells in the basement that hold back puissant and dangerous entities. Many entities would destroy whole worlds to get their hands on the House of Mystery, but the real value of the House is this: it cannot be destroyed, it cannot be found, and it cannot be invaded by force. The House is a semi-living thing, perhaps even conscious in a way that defies human understandings of 'aware'. It parks itelf where John needs to be, often without telling him that's where he ought to go. It is quite loyal to John (for the moment).
Liv's Map:
A map left with John after Liv Aberdine - daughter of Jasper Winters - used her gift of scrying on it. Liv left the map in John's care after she decided she wanted no part of the supernatural world John lived in. When something supernatural is about to happen somewhere, a small dot of blood wells up at the location on the map. The map only covers the United States and it gives no information about what's going to happen, it only provides the location of an impending event.
Weaknesses
Chain Smoker:
John smokes like a freight train. He no longer has cancer, but there are still lesions in his lungs. Prolonged running or exertion can trigger a coughing fit and he can't over-exert himself physically.
Damned:
John's soul is marked for Hell. It's in fact marked three times over, by the three current ruling lords of that infernal place. This is a mark that can be seen by many creatures who have the sense for such things, or mortals with the Sight. It's a little embarassing-- almost a brand on the soul. But as long as the triumvirate disagrees on who deserves it, John's soul can't be remanded past Hell's gates.
Family:
Deep bonds of love and magic entangle John with his wife, Meggan, and daughter, Ceci. Laughing Magicians court trouble and their enemies could easily use their family against them.
Hard Knocks:
John barely cleared his upper sixth forms in school, and that was the end of his formal education. He was already dabbling with magic on his own time and couldn't be bothered to attend regular school, with frequent suspensions and arrests for being a minor in delinquency. One he finished school he never looked back.
Infamous:
The Constantine reputation precedes John's by a fair amount. They're known as storm crows, harbingers of destruction and chaos. John lives up to that reputation quite well. Only the ignorant or the desperate seek him out. The cost of John's aid can make the cure feel worse than the symptom.
Survivor's Guilt:
Banishing Astra to hell hit John hard, descending him into a stupor that he was checked into an asylum for years. The visions of his actions still haunt him, but it also drives him to do better.
Synchronicity:
There's a cost for all things. Even luck can't come from nowhere. When John rides the waves of synchronicity it's not uncommon for others to get pulled into the undertow. More than a few of his friends over the years have suffered tragedy and loss while being drawn into his wake.
