There are few objects in the realms of Yggdrasil-- or the universe itself-- more potent than the Witchblade. It is currently bound to the soul of Sara Pezzini, who has become an avatar for both the life-giving goddess Gaea and the fundamental mortal need for Destruction. She and the Witchblade exist in a tidal lock with Jackie Estacado, the current bearer of The Darkness.

It conceals itself as a bracelet or gauntlet set with blue and red gems. When the wielder invokes it can take the form of any weapon the user desires. When wielded, the Witchblade provides enormous strength and power on par with the New Gods. The wielder needs neither eat, sleep, nor breathe; they can lift twenty tons of weight and survive impacts and weapons that would fell most mortals. The razor-sharp armor the Witchblade summons can resist all but the mightiest of blows. The weapon itself senses magic and communicates on an empathic level with the wielder. When used with the correct intent and focus it obliterate mystical forces and entities. At will the wielder can fling mystical fires that scourges the darkness and burns away life.

The Witchblade's power is weakest when borne against mortals, a weapon only marginally more dangerous than a well-made blade. It is when the Witchblade confronts the most puissant of entities that the full power comes to bear. In the hands of a mortal with the requisite strength of character the full powers of the weapon manifest, making even a lowly human a threat to some of the most ancient Powers in the universe.

A number of women have wielded the Witchblade over the centuries. For some the true power of the weapon never manifested beyond a singularly sturdy and effective weapon and their association was temporary. The Witchblade only seeks out a wielder when the Darkness is active, and there have been times in history when the wielder was too weak or too removed from society to do great harm with it. The wielder of the Witchblade can meditate and commune with the echoes of the women who once wielded the weapon, seeking their counsel and their skills.

The first among them was Una. Others include [[Red Sonja, the half-demon Zara of Mercia, Joan of Arc, Amali of Arabia, Salifah Zayid of Bana-Mighdall, and Hua Mulan.
