Ben is a classic grump, a cranky old man, only he was one long before he got old. He tends to be gruff and not particularly optimistic. He's quick to find the flaws in something and more than happy to tell you everything's going to go wrong. He hopes for the best, of course, he's just learned not to expect it.

Ben's a forlorn individual. He is extremely lonely, despite having several extremely close friends. He spends a great deal of time isolated if left to his own devices and has sunk to extreme emotional lows at times. He doesn't seem to be interested in treatment or medication and, as such, he is prone to spiralling.

Ben is an old-fashioned guy raised in an old-fashioned place. He's a bit out of sync with the times and often lives up to the idea of being a cranky old man. He's not particularly good with more modern technology (not to mention a lot of it being miniaturized to a point he can't use it anyway). He likes old movies, old music, old fashion in the literal sense.

Ben's confidence has taken an incredible hit since he became the Thing. He's extremely sensitive to criticism, insult and social pressure. He isn't comfortable in his own skin. Being reminded of that pain only makes it come to the surface, causing him to sometimes lash out or withdraw.

While he's struggled with his own self a great deal, Ben is an extremely solid and dependable individual. When he's needed, he shows up. He's not one to shirk or walk away unless he feels like it's his only choice (and sometimes it has been). He's extremely reliable and loyal by nature, especially to the close-knit group he considers his family.

Ben Grimm possesses incredible superhuman strenght, putting him in the top tier of superhuman powerhouses. His strength would enable him to lift a train engine, rip off a vault door or throw a superhuman blow capable of shattering a city street. He can leap up to about ten stories into the air and has sufficient strength to bend a steel girder. His strength usually hovers around the 9o ton mark, but can exceed that significantly under extreme circumstances.

The Thing:
Due to exposure to cosmic rays, Ben Grimm's body has been transformed into The Thing. His body appears to be made of an organic stone compound that's proved to be incredibly durable, resisting damage from bullets or multi-story falls. Hyperdense and tough, Ben can withstand incredible physical punishment with no significant harm, including high intensity explosives, superhuman energy blasts. His body can withstand the vacuum of space, although he would still need assistance to breathe. His body has incredible stamina, enabling him to remain physically active for hours at a time. Thus far, his body doesn't seem to show any signs of aging, remaining at full physical capacity even entering his sixties.

Ben's fighting style is classic brawling, going back to his days in the streets. He knows how to throw a bunch and a headbutt. He's good in close quarters and he's better than people usually give him credit.

Ben has solid instincts. He can read people well and usually knows a bad apple when he finds it (he realized Victor von Doom was bad news long before Reed). He's hard to fool and often makes the right move even without really realizing why. When something's about to go wrong, Ben often gets a creeping suspicion of things being awry.

Ben is a world class pilot of the most advanced flying machines known to man. He's flown military grade jets, space shuttles, rockets and all kinds of mechanical concoctions created by Reed. He's a capable fighter pilot and has battled extraterrestrials in dogfights with skill and success.

Smarter Than He Looks:
People underestimate Ben all the time, assuming he's just the dumb muscle in the background. Everybody looks dumb next to Reed, but Ben Grimm is a qualified astronaut with extensive training and a college education. He's smart, capable and can think on his feet. People who think they're going to outwit him often find themselves flummoxed.

The Thing is a famous superhero. A lot of young people will have grown up with him as a fixture of their lives, one of the great defenders of good. He can get into most any restaurant, any function. He's recognized all over the world. This can be a great boon - so long as he's willing to let people stare and take pictures and generally put a spotlight on him that he desperately does not like.

Fantastic Four:
Ben is a member of the Fantastic Four and has been for most of the last thirty years. He is founder of that grip and has full access to its resources, facilities, personnel and technology. He has access to a significant trust fund set up for his expenses as part of the group's foundation, meaning he never wants for money.

The Thing is a monster, a physical grotesque, obviously inhuman and horrifying. While his fame may have endeared him to many and given him a popular public persona, those who encounter him in person often still find themselves shocked by how strange it is to encounter him in the 'flesh'. He doesn't blend in, even with his sad attempts at disguises. He's instantly recognizable in any crowd.

Ben is extremely protective of the other members of the Fantastic Four. Anybody who harms them, harms him, and he will do anything to protect them, even sacrifice his life.

Ben hates being the Thing. For all the good he's done, he despises the body in which he has been trapped for more than half of his life. He suffers from severe depression and self-loathing. It impairs him in a wide variety of ways and sometimes alienates him as much as the revulsion of others to his looks.

Thing's a big guy, 6'8" and over half a ton in weight. While he's coordinated enough, he's not overall very agile or quick by nature. He's very much the big heavy. Fast, dextrous opponents can often dodge his attacks and frustrate him. Also, he just doesn't fit in some places.
