Profile
Leonardo is the leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Serious, spiritual, focused, and disciplined, he is often the rock and the string that allows his brothers to be kites and fly as they will. The most strategic and tactical of the band of brothers, he has just returned from Japan from intensive training with the Ancient One, and is returning home to join his brothers once more.
Timeline
Timeline:
- 2004: Leonardo is born a perfectly normal turtle.
- 2005: Leonardo and his 3 brothers come into contact with mutagenic ooze created by T.G.R.I. This changes them into mutant turtles. Splinter is also mutated into existence, and adopts the 4 turtles, naming them after renaissance artists.
- 2010: Splinter trains Leonardo and his brothers in the arts of ninjutsu.
- 2014: Splinter decides the turtles are ready for weapons, and Leonardo receives his first pair of ninjaken.
- 2015: Leo breaks his first pair of ninjaken, and Splinter makes him learn blacksmithing to forge new ones.
- 2018: Splinter finally allows the turtles to explore the world above. They engage in vigilante work from the shadows, never straying from it, and start encountering Hamato Yoshi's old enemy, the Foot clan.
- 2019: The turtles have their fateful encounter with the Shredder in October. Leonardo does not lead the turtles to victory, rather, Splinter has to bail them out. Leonardo is frustrated with the failure and grows sullen and angry. He spends time in South America, protecting a native village from raiders with superior gear and better technology.
- 2020: Having regained his sense of worth and compassion by protecting the villagers, Leonardo returns to New York.

Personality
Leonardo is the serious leader of the turtle team. He follows the ancient Samurai code of Bushido, which is an interesting choice for a ninja. However, the purity of spirit he gains from following such an exacting code is, usually, healthy for him. He is responsible for himself, his brothers, and the world around him, and meditates often to keep in touch with his naturally spiritual side. But...he is cursed with self-doubt, and if anything goes wrong for him, he can spiral out of control to a greater or lesser degree, depending on the circumstance.
Honorable: A core tenant of Leonardo. You can expect him to keep his word, even to an enemy. Even to the Shredder himself. Honoring himself and agreements, even when it is not in his best interest to do so...it is a hard path to work. But Leo wouldn't allow himself to walk any other.
Responsible: Whatever is going on, you can expect Leo to hold himself accountable. This is typically a good thing. It can also be a truly terrible thing if he finds himself on the wrng end of failure, because he'll beat himself up over it for far longer than he should, and he will become distracted.
Serious: Stop having fun and concentrate, guys! Yeah, this is a side effect of being the 'teacher's pet.' There are times this is helpful, when trying to learn or practicing Discipline. There are times this is not, when trying to relax. But whether it's appropriate or not, getting Leo to truly loosen up takes an act of the Kami. All of them.
Spiritual: The Inner Groove. Leo has one. It's actually fairly refined from all his meditations. He is likely to meditate even when Splinter doesn't ask him to, and he frequently clears his mind of distractions in this way. Distractions frequently include his brothers.
Character Sheet
Powers
Amphibious: Leonardo cannot breathe underwater, but he is comfortable in water and can stay inside of it indefinitely. While he cannot breathe underwater per se, he can stay underwater for 4 hours comfortably and 6 hours with effort and use of his Chi Gong technique. Still, he must come up for air eventually. Eventually is just further away than most beings have the patience for. Also, he is a natural expert swimmer, and can move faster in the water than any Olympic Athlete at swimming. He is also able to see and even speak perfectly well underwater, though speaking costs him his supply of air.
Astral Projection: This is very limited, and only possible when Leonardo is deep in meditation. However, if he goes deep enough to leave the world behind, he can communicate with people he is closely connected to, like Master Splinter, the Ancient One, or his brothers...if his brothers ever get that deep in meditation themselves. He so far has an easier time connection with his teachers than his brothers.
Turtle: There are benefits to having a hard shell over one's back and on one's underside. First, it's basically natural body armor, and highly resistant to melee weapons. Being as it's a natural equivalent of medieval armor, is less effective against ballistics...however, the shell on the back is much thicker and will stop bullets, though bullets may leave holes in the shell unless he takes the time to heal those holes. In addition to being bulletproof, the back of the shell is generally twice as strong and tough as the front of the shell, making back attacks against a turtle largely ineffective unless you're going for his head, arms, or legs, which are not covered.
Another side effect of being a turtle...they have more muscle mass and smaller internal organs than a human, and most such organs are only a third of the usual size. As such, should Leonardo's shell be punctured, it is unlikely the puncturing weapon will actually hit anything important enough to cause massive internal bleeding and/or hemorrhaging.
Skills
Ambidexterity: While not born so, Leonardo is trained so. Having dual wielded weapons all his life, Splinter further reinforced this by having his students eat with the 'wrong hand', do other things with the 'wrong hand' and otherwise make sure they could use both hands equally for anything. He can even throw kunai and shuriken with either hand, as the situation calls for.
Blacksmithing: From the first time Leonardo broke his ninjaken, Master Splinter trained him in the art of Blacksmithing. Leonardo was told he needed to rely on himself and forge his own ninjaken, rather than buying things from human smiths or on Ebay or whatever. As a result of the constant damage to his weapons, Leonardo has had to forge multiple ninjaken for himself, and due to their breakage, he's already forged his 11th set. This includes his 'spare sets' that he keeps handy in case his primary set breaks, again. Leonardo gets better every time he must forge new ones, and more recent models are sturdier than his first tries.
Chi Gong: A special ninja art that controls breathing and heart rate. Should Leonardo take a wound that would be very difficult to heal from...this will not heal the wound, but it'll let him triple how long he can survive with that wound till he can be treated for it. This also helps in extreme environmental conditions, such as the icy cold of the arctic or the heat of the Sahara desert.
Cross Training: For purposes of deception, mostly, Leonardo has been trained in the weapons of his brothers...the bo staff, sai, and nunchuku. He is not a master of those weapons, however, merely competent enough to fake it until the turtles switch back to their real weapons, having completed their deception.
Environmental Useage: It is not enough to simply master one's self and one's weapons. One must master the world around them. Leonardo takes advantage of whatever is around him to gain an advantage over his enemy, and always kills the lights if it is possible to do so, so he can operate in the dark. The shadow is his friend. He is especially dangerous in the sewers, since that is his home, and an opponent would have a near impossible time trying to find him down there.
Iaijutsu: The quick draw technique of the samurai. Because Leonardo uses swords, he has perfected pulling this trick with his ninjaken, even though the weapon is stored behind his back. Such strikes are as quick as any Samurai would use from a sword at their hip.
Kenjutsu: This is the art of using a single sword in combat. When referring to a ninjaken, Leonardo has the benefit of mastery. Wielding a single sword grants precision and accuracy wielding two blades at once does not.
Leadership: Leonardo leads, as the old song goes. There is a reason for that...as the most serious of the turtles, he is most likely to keep his head in rough situations. More importantly, he also understands the strengths and weakness of his brothers, knowing to send Raphael in to situations where strength is required, Mikey into speed situations, Donnie into fight at range at situations. He also has studied tactics, and Sun Tzu's the art of war is his favorite book for a reason. Having read through that book dozens of times, he's learned a few things. Strategy, which is different from tactics, is another thing he studies to make sure the plan going in is solid. Tactics is adjusting on the fly, and he does plenty of both.
Ni Ten Ichi Ryu: A fancy way of saying 'training with two ninjaken', this is Leonardo's primary form of combat. With ninjaken in each hand, he specializes in swift, deadly strikes. He must also take slightly more care than his brothers when he fights, as the ninjaken is the only weapon on the team truly designed to be lethal in combat. Anything can be a lethal weapon in the hands of a ninja, but swords are sharp and cut. As a result of long training, Leonardo can even use his ninjaken to cut through metal, such as robots or trash cans or other such things. He has spent more time training on this then any other form of combat he knows, and his enhanced skill with his primary weapons is notable.
Ninja Tools: Leonardo has also been trained at using other Ninja tools, such as throwing kunai and shuriken, using a dagger-like tanto, climbing claws, grappling hooks, smoke bombs. He's even spent time learning the yumi bow and archery. Leonardo's extra focus on training has helped him use these things at a high level. It also helps he's been training like this for years with such things.
Pop Culture: Time spent living in the abandoned subway tunnel the turtles call home with Master Splinter can lead to boredom fast, but during free time they have outside their training, they have found ways to keep themselves occupied. Television, newspapers, video games, magazines, books, even Netflix, one of the greatest gifts to turtle-kind. You name it, and Leonardo has immersed himself in it. This has left him knowledgeable in a lot of worthless stuff, but it sure comes in handy when looking for just the right thing to say. He is also a fan of video games, new age music, and the TV show Space Heroes, which is loosely based on many of the more famous space oriented heroes of the world.
Stealth: The trademark of the Ninja. Do not be seen, ever. Do not be heard, ever. This is not merely training to not be seen and not be heard, it is understanding the psychology of how people look around for somebody they're trying to find, and using that to not be found. It is knowing things like people rarely look up. It is masquerading as inanimate objects. It is disguising one's self (insofar as it's possible for a mutant turtle) to not be picked out of a crowd. It is also things like being trained to walk on rice paper from Splinter from a very young age, and Splinter not being satisfied till he can't hear a thing.
Trilingual: Leonardo speaks English and Japanese, and is perfectly fluent at both. He usually uses Japanese in combat, as few Americans speak it. Were the turtles in Japan, however, they'd use English. The idea is to be speaking a language your enemy does not. As a result of being in South America for a while, he's started to pick up pieces of Spanish. It's no more than what you'd learn after a high school Spanish class though.
Unarmed Combat: Leonardo has also been trained in the unarmed combat of ninjutsu, using misdirection, along with feet and hands to deal swift, powerful strikes designed to put an enemy down before they can call for help and reveal his presence. Because they are turtles, Leonardo has also learned how to blend his shell, particularly the reinforced back part of his shell into his combat style, using it as simply just another weapon, due it being a very hard surface.
Resources
Family: Between Master Splinter and his 3 brothers, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo, Leonardo has a family of people who love him and want the best for him. Recently, this expanded to include the Ancient One, for Leonardo specifically, and April O'Neil, their human contact who helps them with things only humans can do for them.
Ninja Tools: Leonardo possesses a collection of ninja tools with which he plies his "trade." Primary of these are his paired swords - which are ninjaken, neither katanas nor wakizashi as they fall between the length of those two types of swords; he actually has multiple pairs of the swords because of how often they break, his latest are the pair he wears on his back while he has a spare set in the Turtlevan and a couple of spare sets in the mall lair - everyone who knows him suspects he keeps at least one other spare hidden in the old lair, possibly having caches with a spare elsewhere.
His other tools include such things as tanto knives, smoke bombs, shuriken and kunai, a grappling gun, and climbing claws. He also has a yumi bow but it tends to just hold a place of honor in his room at the lair. In addition to those tools he carries he has concealed caches of tools hidden around the greater New York metropolitan area.
Turtle Lair: The Turtles have called a number of places home including a sewer lair, a farmhouse belonging to a human ally, and a disused Brooklyn mall. Their lair is their 'safe place' where they have no need to hide their identities. Where they can train, relax, eat pizza and pursue their various interests. Given their assortment of enemies, they maintain security and a close watch on any place they are currently calling home.
Weaknesses
Bushido: Leonardo would not call this a weakness. But the code of Bushido has 8 tenants. Righteousness, Courage, Compassion, Respect, Honesty, Honor, Duty, and Self Control. However, Bushido is still a strict warrior's code, and easily exploited by those without honor.
Foot Clan: There's an entire organization of ninjas that want nothing more than to kill Leonardo, his brothers, and his master. Their master, Shredder, is an especially dangerous threat to everything Leonardo loves and cares about.
Self-Doubt: Leonardo questions himself. Responsibility is a heavy weight, and he is prone to second guessing himself after the fact. When failure happens to him, as it does to every being, Leonardo will endlessly turn it over in his mind. causing him to lose concentration, and be sloppy and imprecise.
Turtle: He's a walking, talking turtle. There's really no way to disguise this. Which means, not only does he have to watch out for Shredder, he has to watch out for Pro Humana and other organizations that hate mutants. Sure, it's not an X factor Leonardo has, but his mutation is so obvious he'd be thrown in with actual mutants of the X variety.
