Donatello does machines! Intelligence, curiosity, and resourcefulness make Donatello the brains of the Ninja Turtles. On the battlefield, he's a skilled ninja, trained in the art of combat and invisibility. In the lab, he is a skilled technician and inventor. Like any scientist, Donatello is pragmatic and skeptical, which occasionally puts him at odds with his group's overall mission of fighting crime.

Timeline

Timeline:
* 2004: Four perfectly normal turtles were born to a perfectly normal turtle mother. If it was a race, Donatello came in third place.

* 2005: The four turtles are exposed to an unusual mutagenic ooze through a broken T.G.R.I. canister. They mutate into baby humanoid turtles. Splinter, a similarly mutated rat, takes them in as their caretaker and father figure. He names them after Italian Renaissance artists.

* 2010: Splinter begins training the turtles in the art of ninjutsu.

* 2012: Donatello finds a number of books on engineering and computers. He begins to do machines.

* 2013: Donatello engineers many upgrades to the sewer home, including electricity and, most importantly, the Internet.

* 2014: Each turtle is given a unique weapon. Donatello is given the bo staff.

* 2018: Splinter finally decides that the brothers have been received enough training to go above ground. Prior to this, their only exposure to the world was through media: television, movies, newspapers, magazines, books, and most importantly, video games. They soon start to operate from the shadows as vigilantes, and it isn't long before they cross paths with the Foot Clan.

* 2019: The brothers are forced to blow their cover in order to assist April O'Neil, a reporter being confronted by a street gang. It's not long before the turtles are forced to confront Shredder. The whole thing ends with Shredder in a garbage truck, seemingly squished by its compactor. Donnie's brother, Leonardo, leaves for South America to do some soul-searching.

* 2020: Donatello begins doing IT support from the sewer lair, along with operating a cryptocurrency mining farm during the colder months. It keeps the turtles in pizza and gives Donnie something to do beyond playing MMORPGs.

Personality

Autodidact:
Donatello has an insatiable desire to learn. Early in his life, books detailing science and engineering were the bill of fare, but the addition of the Internet sparked a surge in Donatello's education. He has found a particular affinity for mathematics, technology, engineering, and computers. This quality also means that Donatello is profoundly curious about the outside world. His search for answers has made him a little more introspective, compared to his brothers. Donatello seeks to observe and experiment, but if he's not able to, he'll just settle for understanding.

Fun-Loving:
Donatello is a teenager, just like his brothers. Put them together and it's a powder keg. While he might not be the party animal that his brother Mikey is, Donatello loves hanging out with his brothers, watching movies, and playing video games. Though it might be tempting to label Donatello as the more reserved, bookish one, he is a teenager and still loves teenager things.

Introspective:
Donatello is the calm one, at least compared to his three brothers. Lacking Raphael's anger, Donatello is more inclined to let something go than his older brother. Unlike his brother Mikey, Donatello is less likely drop what he's doing in favor of a video game or some other diversion. Though he's been put in charge in the past, Donatello isn't concerned with the leadership burdens of his brother Leo. As a result of Donatello's differences, he tends to be calmer and more introspective than his brothers. He is inclined to try to understand everything he can, even things that aren't necessarily meant to be known, such as the age old question of "why?"

Pragmatic:
As the group's resident technician and scientist, Donatello views the world much more pragmatically than his brothers. He prefers to evaluate situations according to the established facts and figures and is likely to discount things that cannot be scientifically proven. While might make him a skilled technician and scientist, it also means that Donatello is compelled by data and occasionally doubts his family's ability to properly fight crime and deal with threats.

Protective:
Donatello is fiercely protective of those important to him and gentle to those in need. He prefers to settle problems with words, rather than violence (though, if an opponent seems insistent, he's happy to oblige). When their backs are against the wall, Donatello is inclined to defend and come to the aid of his brothers, rather than press an attack. Donatello is particularly protective over his youngest brother, Michelangelo.

Powers

Amphibious:
While Donatello can't breathe underwater, he is comfortable in that environment and can stay inside of it for an extended period of time, up to four hours with the potential to stretch it up to six with proper focus and determination. However, he must come up for air eventually. As a trained and disciplined ninja, even he can last a while like this in spite of often wanting to be more proactive. He is a natural swimmer, able to move faster in the water than even the best Olympic athlete. Being able to see and speak underwater is of no trouble to him, though speaking would come at the expense of some of his air.

Astral Projection:
Like his brothers, Donatello has a minor ability for astral projection. It's very limited, but if Donatello really applies himself properly in meditation, he can communicate astrally with those he's closest to -- namely, his brothers and Splinter. This technique is particularly difficult for Donatello, but he's able to do it if he's able to get into a deep enough meditation. He's not able to do it even half as well as his brother Leonardo, but he can pull it off if he tries.

Genius:
It may not be supernatural, but it's certainly not a learned skill: Donatello is a genius. Well, perhaps a more accurate way to put it is that Donatello has the capacity to be a genius. He's limited, presently, by his youthfulness and his resources.

Turtle Physiology:
There are benefits to having a hard shell as a main part of one's torso. First, it serves as natural body armor, highly resistant to melee weapons. A natural equivalent to medieval armor, it's less effective against firearms, to a point. The shell on the back is much thicker and can stop bullets, though they may leave holes in the shell until any healing can occur. In addition to being bulletproof, the back of the shell is generally twice as strong and tough as the front, making rear attacks against a turtle largely ineffective unless aiming for unprotected limbs or the head.

Donatello also possesses more muscle mass and smaller internal organs than a human, and most such organs are only about a third of the usual size. As such, should Donatello's shell be punctured, it is unlikely the puncturing weapon will actually hit anything important enough to cause massive internal injuries.

Skills

Ambidextrous:
Through Splinter's training, Donatello has equal proficiency with both of his hands. Splinter taught the turtles how to use both hands by having them do common things with their non-dominant hands, such as eating, using single-handed weapons, and so on. As a result, Donatello can throw blades and shuriken with either hand, as needed. While he tends to hold his bo staff with both hands, Donatello is able to wield it equally in either.

Art of Ninjitsu:
Like his brothers, Donatello has been trained in the subtle art of ninjitsu, which combines martial arts, stealth, and unconventional warfare. This includes the use of various ninja tools, such as throwing stars, climbing claws, grappling hooks, and smoke bombs. This training has given Donatello insight into the proper use of these techniques and tools.

Bilingual:
While he and his brothers prefer English, Donatello is equally fluent in Japanese, thanks to Splinter's education.

Bo Staff:
Donatello has been trained by Splinter in the proper use of a bo staff in combat. Donatello prefers to use a single, full-sized staff. Under his control, the bo staff moves with lightning speed and can deliver both offensive strikes and defensive blocks. Donatello is particularly adept at blocking attacks using one end of his bo staff and riposting with the other. In addition to being skilled with combat using his bo staff, Donatello can plant one end of it against a surface and use it to launch himself, similar to the action of a pole vault.

Computer Expert:
Donatello has a natural affinity for computer systems. He's particularly comfortable with the Unix-like systems, such as Linux. He's excellent at solving any number of computer problems. Donatello has also proven to be a skilled programmer, as well. He can do simple tasks, such as terminal scripting, as well as more complex projects, such as app development. Of particular note, Donatello fancies himself as a white-hat computer hacker. He is able to compromise vulnerabilities found in computer systems, dig up information, and plant surveillance programs. Things like that!

Cross Training:
For purposes of deception, mostly, Donatello has been trained in the weapons of his brothers...the sai, nunchuku, and ninjaken. He is not a master of those weapons, however, merely competent enough to fake it until the turtles switch back to their real weapons, having completed their deception.

Does Machines:
Donatello is a brilliant engineer. His mind is specially atuned to the needs and concerns of machines. He can perform advanced repairs of complex devices, vehicles, electronics, and everything in between. In addition to keeping the Turtle Lair and its equipment running in tip-top shape, Donatello can also create brand new devices. Repurposing technology is the aim of the game here. Where someone might see a heap of junk, Donatello sees potential. He can weld, fasten, screw, solder, and so on. He understands the concepts of electricity, engineering, structure, and industrial design.

First Aid:
Let's get one thing straight here: Donatello isn't a doctor, nurse, or anything like that. His large, three fingered hands are not ideal for that kind of work. Still, he's familiar with basic first aid techniques plus a little bit more, including splinting broken bones and stitching.

Pop Culture:
When most of your life has been spent living segregated from the rest of society, mastering the arts of ninjutsu, time is needed to unwind. Like his brothers, Donatello loves entertainment. Video games, movies, TV shows, YouTube, Netflix, pro wrestling, MMA, you name it and he's probably watched it or played it. He particularly enjoys classic rock.

Stealth:
Splinter taught Donatello, along with his brothers, how to become one with the darkness. He can hide and move within the shadows without being noticed. This training has also given Donatello the ability to move swiftly, with grace, while making as little sound as possible.

Unarmed Combat:
Like his brothers, Donatello is skilled in unarmed combat. He has been trained in a number of martial arts, including karate, judo, and kung fu. He is adept with or without weapons, but he prefers to use his bo staff whenever possible. Because he's a turtle, Donatello has learned how to blend his shell, particularly the reinforced back part of his shell into his combat style, using it as simply just another weapon, due it being a very hard surface.

Video Games:
Like his brothers, Donatello has played many, many video games. He's particularly fond of old arcade machines. With all their experience, Donatello is very, very good at playing these electronic games. Before being allowed by Splinter to go to the surface, Donatello found his connection to the outside world through World of Warcraft. Having played the game for many years, he's very, very good at it.

April!:
The first human the turtles allowed into their world through letting her see them as they are, April O'Neil needed a few helping hands one night and the brothers were there to send some gang members running. After the initial shock wore off, April became a friend to them and to be honest, it didn't take much more than bringing some pizzas and other food by on a fairly regular basis. More importantly, they have someone who can feed them info on stuff that might need their attention, and she has some protectors. Each of the turtles have taken to April a little differently. Raphael may have been on the fence about her at first, but he seems to be coming around to the idea. Michelangelo thinks she's really amazing, awesome, and cool. Donatello, like Mikey, is a fan. In fact, it's fair to say that Donatello has a teenage crush on April, having once described her as "the most beautiful girl" he's ever seen.

Cryptocurrency Miner:
Through collecting discarded video cards, Donatello has built himself a pretty nice cryptocurrency mining rig. Because it generates so much heat, he can only run it when ambient temperatures are on the low side. The income it generates may be modest, but it's passive. Besides, rent is cheap when you share a sewer with four roommates. When allowed to run, the cryptocurrency mining rig brings in just enough money to keep the turtles fed with pizza when they want it.

Lab Equipment:
Donatello has a complete lab set up in the Turtle Lair, providing him everything he might need to "do machines." The set up is not sophisticated, as it is primarily made up of scavenged equipment and materials, but it allows him to do his work in the way he learned how. He even has a full electronic station, complete with a multimeter and soldering equipment. If something needs fixing, making, welding, or breaking, Donatello's lab gives him the right tool for the job...or at least a scavenged or jury-rigged equivalent.

Remote It Job:
Donatello brings in a modest income working from the lair doing remote IT support. This not mentally stimulating work and usually involves asking customers to turn it off and on again or recalling their password reset question's answer. It may be beneath his ability level, but it brings in money and keeps the family fed. Plus, it's something to do!

Shell Phones:
While the exact name of these devices may be up for debate (some prefer "Turtle Coms"), Donatello has created personal communicators for himself, his brothers, Splinter, and their allies, such as April O'Neil. These resemble turtle shells and open up like a flip-phone. Cellphones are great and all, but Donatello created these for secure, encrypted communication to keep their enemies from snooping on them. They automatically piggy-back onto New York City's mesh network, but can be used elsewhere as long as they're within ten miles or so of the Turtle Van.

Turtle Lair:
It's easy to mistake the Turtle Lair as just an abandoned sewer tunnel, but this is where Donatello and his brothers grew up. It's where they learned, trained, and developed. It's also where they hung out, watched movies, and played video games. This is a safe place for Donatello and his family and they take great care in protecting its secret location. It has all the comforts, including a kitchen, dojo, bedrooms, and a gym. Most importantly, there's a large screen TV and a massive video game collection. Donatello even has a makeshift lab for himself.

Turtle Van:
Donatello has made a number of devices, but none more iconic than the Turtle Van. This was originally a dead-to-rights van, abandonded for months in an alley. Donatello fixed it up, got it running, and now the turtles use it for easier surface transport. The Turtle Van is equipped with reinforced side panels and all-terrain tired. The windows completely block anyone on the outside from looking in. Inside the van is equipment for monitoring police radio frequencies. Various antennae are hidden in the structural elements of the van, allowing the monitoring equipment to pick up transmissions on all the right frequencies. The van is also able to map out wi-fi hotspots it passes so the turtles can take advantage of them later. Finally, the van's communication array serves as an antenna repeater for the turtles' personal communicator devices.

Weapons:
Donatello has access to a number of ninja weapons, including throwing stars, climbing claws, grappling hooks, and smoke bombs. His signature weapon is his six-foot long bo staff. He also has access to the weapons preferred by his brothers, including Leo's ninjaken, Raphael's Sai, and Mikey's nunchaku.

Weaknesses

Can't Catch a Phrase:
Awesome! Richeous! Bossanova! ...Bossanova? Chevy Nova? Let's be real: the turtles have some great catchphrases, but Donatello can't do it. He tries but he just can't. While his brothers might know just the thing to say to celebrate an amazing moment, or when they just got the drop on an enemy, Donatello tends to fumble and ruin the moment.

Foot Clan:
By themselves, these street-level ninja wannabes have been little more than an annoying nuisance for the turtles to deal with. They only become a danger when they have a big numbers advantage over the turtles. They do provide, at times, a focus for the brothers to let their frustrations out on, but the true threat is a ninja known as the Shredder. As the leader of the Foot Clan, he has crossed paths with the turtles before and proven to be a formidable, lethal foe. Facing them one at a time, he possesses the skill to defeat them with ease. In their first real encounter, only Leonardo managed to land an attack before he was taken down and on the verge of being killed by their opponent. To defeat the Shredder, it takes the brothers working together at their best, as a single unit. Even then, it might not be enough. They needed Splinter's help to win the day, with the Shredder seemingly killed, but they cannot afford to let their guard down one way or another even if he's gone for good.

He Doesn't Exist:
None of the turtles have official identities. No birth certificates or Social Security numbers. Their names, though given at birth, might be considered by others to be mere aliases. For Donatello and his brothers, this cuts them off from some fairly basic resources available to the average citizen. While the turtles have developed a few tricks to game the system for their basic wants and needs, none are guaranteed to last.

Lonely:
Donatello might be having a good time, joking with his brothers, but his exposure to the internet has produced a palpable feeling of loneliness. It's not uncommon for Donatello to feel alienated from his brothers. He wants to share his interests with them, but there are moments where Donatello just feels different. As a result, Donatello spends a pretty decent amount of time on the internet, conversing about computers and technology with strangers in chatrooms and forums (@duz_machines84), usually while his brothers are sleeping. It may be possible for this loneliness to be exploited.

Obviously a Turtle:
Donatello and his brothers are humanoid turtles. Splinter is a humanoid rat. There's no way around these plain facts. Even with mutants and meta-humans out there, there's just no way the brothers are going to blend in with the top-siders. There's only so much a trenchcoat and hat can do. The turtles might be a source of fascination and interest to some, but they could easily cause fear and revulsion. Fortunately, Splinter trained the turtles to employ stealth and be ready to disappear into the shadows at a moment's notice.

Too Smart:
Donatello is a smart guy. He has a MacGyver-like ability to jury rig fantastic devices from junk and equip the turtles to deal with the trouble that lies ahead. There's a point, however, when someone can be too smart for their own good. It can become irritating to be around Donatello when he's in one of those look-how-smart-I-am kind of moods.

Youthful:
While there have been occasional forays topside, prior to that the entire lives the turtles knew was confined to places beneath the streets of New York City. Michelangelo and the others kept up on current events and then some by staying tuned in to news and other forms of entertainment through the television and more, but it also left them with a somewhat false idea of what the real world is really like. Thanks to his small obsession with the internet, this hasn't hit Donatello as hard as his brother Mikey, but it's still an issue. They're already the equivalent of teenagers, curious about everything that's out there. Add in the fact they never got to actually develop experience by living among others, and it's a recipe for comedy here, disaster there. Lately, more trips to the surface have followed and they've begun to learn more about what's up there. The balance the turtles find going forward, mainly in how hidden to remain and how much to involve themselves in things, is up to them to determine.
