It's said that one's history isn't just one lifetime, but many lives, played out at different times. Richard Stadler's arguably lived a few already; from a family man trying to set up his stake in life, to a soldier-scientist at the knife's edge of biodefense and diseases that are mankind's greatest enemy. He's consciously made a choice, however, to start a new one; passing along his knowledge to future generations and enkindling the same love of biology he's felt in others. Only time will tell, however, if he's completely done living those other lives.

History1:
* 1975: Born in Traverse City, Michigan, to Elieen and Jerome 'Jerry' Stadler.
* 1977: Penelope 'Penny' Stadler, sister and only sibling, born.
* 1989-1993: Attends Traverse City Central High School, achieving good grades, but taking an especial interest in biology courses. Honors and AP classes are taken and passed at this time, with high standardized test scores.
* 1993: Graduates Central High, and manages to get accepted into the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, both a first pick and exceedingly expensive to a working class family. At his father (a Vietnam veteran)'s suggestion, joins the ROTC program to help pay for it through scholarships; Starts attending college in the Fall.
* 1994: Meets Katherine Hodgkiss, a pre-law student, in the second semester of their freshman years. Chemistry is evident, and the two hit it off rather well, leading to eventually deciding on a relationship and cohabitating later that same year. Talk of a proper engagement to placticate her wealthy family and eventual marriage is bandied about for after graduation.
* 1996: Rick and Kathy aren't careful enough, resulting in an unplanned pregnancy. After some planning and rumination, both agree that, while tough and unplanned, is simply moving up something they both wanted. They're married in a civil ceremony at Ann Arbor's city hall, to the chagrin of both families.
* 1997: Richard's son, Arthur, is born. Both new parents are frazzled, but pull through; Richard graduates summa cum laude with a degree in Biology. ROTC training is completed, as well, placing him as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserves, as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) officer.
* 1998: Both Richard and Katherine decide to leave Ann Arbor, and move closer to her parents in Metropolis for support. Richard takes a year off of schooling to help move and get things settled as Kathleen continues her law degree in Metropolis. During this time, Richard lobbies his reserve unit and is allowed to go through 3 weeks of Airborne training, earning his jump wings, and undoubtedly reaching the height of adventure in his career.
* 1998-2000: Richard attends the University of Metropolis along with Katherine balancing school work, childcare, and the increasingly overbearing presence of his in-laws in helping raise his son. He graduated in the year 2000 with a Master's in Microbiology, at the same time Kathy received her J.D.
* 2001: The family moves to New York City, in part over disagreements with Kathy's parents. Rick manages to snag a junior researcher position at Stagg Enterprises, and Kathy starts at a law firm. Rick's reserve contract is coming to a close, and with a decently large apartment in West Central Park, things seem stable with a new life to begin.
* 2001: September 11th Terrorist attacks. Rick's plans for leaving the reserves are put on hold due to stop loss. Both workplaces receive heightened security. Concerns are heightened at a possible deployment.
* 2002: Richard's reserve Unit is activated late in the year, with deployments over to Kuwait among rising rhetoric.
* 2003: Early in the year, the invasion of Iraq began. Stadler was mostly behind the lines for the majority of the operation, coordinating actions for cautious activity and clean up of possible (and nonexistent) WMD sites.
* 2003: Southern Iraq. In late 2003, Richard was attached to a small team, heading for a supposedly cleared area in southern Iraq that may have included WMD stockpiles. On the way, they were ambushed by irregular forces, which took out the security element leading. Stadler, after some panic, managed to rally remaining members of the convoy to return fire, covering and managing to get back to their vehicles and escape the ambush. Notable awards include a Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, and a Combat Action Badge. Hopes that an injury sustained would lead to a rotation back to the States are dashed, but his tour in an active combat zone would hopefully be coming to a close soon.

History2:
* 2004: Early in the year, Stadler receives news that his wife and son have died in a car accident. The fire that occured required identification from dental records. It had been a few days since the accident before the message was able to get to him, and another week to arrange for travel home; during this time, Katherine's parents had arranged for a funeral and cremation of both bodies, leaving Rick to say goodbye to a plaque at a cemetery outside Metropolis.
* 2004: Rick is offered an honorable discharge due to hardship; this is rejected, and he instead looks to a transfer to active service somewhere his skills and education can be used. Service at the Army's clinical labs is applied for, but certain officers recognize a combination of high intelligence and education, field training for hazardous environments, performance under pressure, and overall competence as an officer. An offer is made to join a covert operations group forming under the US Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC) at Fort Detrick. The offer is accepted.
* 2005: Richard is run through a number of training sessions to prepare him for the role. This includes Air Assault, advanced infantry courses, and familiarization with classified biological agents.
* 2007: After comprehensive recruitment, training, and bureaucratic ground work, the group is formed and activated. The unit itself is designed for deployment to investigate both normal disease outbreaks and reports of biological weapon stockpiles in countries that would otherwise not accept American intervention or investigation; it's personnel scientist-soldiers, both able to fight and investigate.
* 2008: Northern Russia. The first active deployment of Rick's unit, with Rick, then a Captain, deployed as the lead officer in the ground element. The operation was to attack and neutralize a stockpile of weaponized smallpox that intelligence indicated was slated for sale to a concern in the Middle East. While there were initial concerns about the unit, the operation was conducted near flawlessly; communication was taken out, and the garrison at the facility was handled covertly and in open combat. By the time a response force had arrived, the unit was already back in Norway.
* 2011: Latveria. Operation was planned to cross the border from Romania into Latveria to investigate a suspected biological weapons laboratory. An incursion into the border was made, but forces were only off of the helicopters for several minutes before they were detected. A quick decision was made to abort, and forces were barely able to escape before identification. Latveria added to no-go list for future operations.
* 2012: Defense of Fort Detrick/Battle of Frederick. During the alien invasion of Earth by the Alliance, alien ground forces attempted to advance on the U.S. Army's facilities at Fort Detrick; strategic intent was unknown, but indications were a planned breach of USAMRIID facilities, with a secondary attempt to degrade support to Site R at Raven Rock. Major Stadler, being the highest ranking combat officer on site, took command of a force of Marine reservists, military policeman, Maryland National Guard, and any other combat capable elements to delay and repel attackers. Fort Detrick suffered moderate damage, but facilities containing critical biological material were not breached. Requests after the invasion to study materials from the genebomb were denied. Notable awards include the Distinguished Service Cross and the Army Combat Medical Badge.
* 2015: After on again, off again study with colleagues and a special program at the University of Maryland, Rick receives a PhD in Cellular Microbiology; his dissertation on possible man made origins and carriers for the sudan ebolavirus saw creative use of unclassified sources.

History3:
* 2017: Central Africa. Lieutenant Colonel Stadler's team moves to intervene and assist with reported cases of a new hemorrhagic fever; the mission is after a long spell of field work. Samples are retrieved, but extraction is not possible, and radios are destroyed, fearing capture. Stadler's team manages to reconnect with command a week later, after exfiltration across the border to a friendly country. This is one of the last field operations Stadler takes before promotion to command.
* 2020: Geneva. Colonel Stadler, now the commanding officer of the operational group, attends the World Health Assembly. He both takes and provides useful information to interested groups, and utilizes contacts to assist in laying the groundwork for future operations in close door sessions. SHIELD is rumored to have attended, but it isn't something Stadler can confirm.
* 2021: Stadler acures enough credit to properly retire from military service, and decides that he wants to try returning to civilian life and what he's been running from for a decade. He sees himself discharged, and attending CUNY for teaching courses.
* 2022: Stadler starts a student-teaching position as a biology teacher at Happy Harbor High School.

Personality

Bushy-Tailed:
To some surprise, especially to Richard himself, switching from a world he knew well to one he's a neophyte in has led to some excitement, especially coupled with the challenge of passing both the knowledge and excitement of his profession to the younger generations. When it comes to the classroom, he can't help but put some 'joie de vivre' when it comes to dissecting fetal pigs or explaining the intricate majesty of the central nervous system.

Guarded:
Stadler generally doesn't like to reveal much of his past to those he doesn't have a close relationship with, or who share the same level of security clearance; people who ask him about his family get some general information about them passing away and little else, while those asking about what he did in the army get a vague one word answer and a change of the subject. That doesn't mean he doesn't like to have a little bit of fun at times, alluding to a piece of information and being coy about how he knows it, or sticking firmly to an obvious cover story even if people know it's false.

Methodical:
Stadler is someone who seems to have a plan for everything; while 'everything' isn't a possibility, he's the type who runs through scenarios in his head and plans for the next move. Sometimes it's as complex as running through a decision tree for if his block gets occupied by some alien invasion force and he needs to escape, or as simple as noting the exits in a room when he walks in. Nothing is perfect, of course, and it isn't as if he has a bug out bag in every bus locker.. But that's not for lack of trying. At the end of the day, he tries his best to embody those who fail to plan, plan to fail.

Powers

Vaccinated:
Stadler's old line of work took him close to diseases that were tailor-made to do the most damage possible against an unsuspecting immune system, and countering them was a large priority for USARMDC. Consequently, he's been vaccinated and treated against an exceedingly high number of diseases, both common and rare, with vaccination techniques that cross the line into experimental. He rarely gets sick from common diseases. Diseases that may leave someone bedridden for a week are more like a cold, and he stands a very good chance of surviving even ones that are deadly to most of those infected.

Skills

Sawbones:
Richard made the move toward laboratory microbiology a long time ago, and, unlike many of his peers, isn't a medical doctor; that being said, one doesn't learn a large amount of biology, work within the Army Medical Department, and see a grab bag of battlefield wounds without becoming something of a sawbones. He can perform basic battlefield aid, suture and staple up gashes, and rip out bullets that end up in the wrong place; he's not the right person to go to for complex or hospital level surgeries, however.

Virologist:
The second half of Stadler's old job, and arguably the older one. A love for biology in early days of schooling led to a high level of education, to which his military career modified into protecting others. In addition to an extensive knowledge of biological systems, with time and equipment, he can analyze biological agents and diseases to find ways to counteract them, as well as recognize symptoms and propose solutions, both long term and quick and dirty. This extends to knowing how to protect himself and others from biological hazards, and, to a lesser extent, poisonous chemicals or radiological dangers.

Warfighter:
The first half of Stadler's old job, and an interesting one; almost two decades in military service gives you the opportunity to hone a stunning amount of combat skills. Stadler can infiltrate from a helicopter or jump out of a plane, can direct men under arms to advantageous positions, and can operate pistols, long arms, grenades, anti-tank weapons, and everything in between. In close combat, he's trained in 'disabling' combatives to finish the fight as quickly as possible (though he does have a thing for fixing bayonets). If he has a weapon, he's a dangerous individual. If he has soldiers with weapons, there's very little he can't accomplish.

Resources

Pension Plan:
With his retirement from the Army, various investments, and the wise decision to purchase and pay off a townhouse in Manhattan with life insurance, most of Rick's standard living expenses are comfortably accounted for, without taking into account the meager salary a teacher would make. He's not rich, but certainly deserves a position in the upper middle class.

Prepper:
Stadler knows, intimately, that the world ending or a city destroying itself can be caused by a single cough and a couple of days to spread, and has taken up his own stockpile of supplies just in case things go south. His own residence in the city has canned food, jerry can's of water, all manner of camping supplies, and any firearm, ammunition, and pieces of tactical gear he can get on. There's also an isolated, off the grid place in upstate New York, a long term project that can be used if he ever needs to bug out? or decides to finally retire to somewhere quiet.

Rolodex:
Richard's old job required a very healthy personal network; it required gathering resources and permissions from a host of military and government organizations both domestically and internationally, and it's a network that Rick tries to keep current, despite his recent change in employment;this includes professional acquaintances and fire-forged squad members. If someone needs a well-meaning military resource, chances are Stadler knows the means to get it and the person to ask. If it has to do with a critical disease outbreak, Rick will be the conduit to the folks in charge.

Squadmates:
In addition to his remaining connections, Rick has closer contact with 4 old military buddies; more than acquaintances and contacts, these are friends that he trusts with his life, if need be. They include Renee DeClere, a sarcastic doctor with the Public Health Service, Elmyria Fleece, a peppy quartermaster turned private armorer, Barbra Coxley, a rather enigmatic spook, and Juan Estano, sauve, and Rick's old Sergeant Major.

Weaknesses

Neophyte Teacher:
It's not that Stadler is new to the concept of instruction or academia; he has experience in both. What he doesn't have is a grasp of exactly how to keep control of a classroom of teenagers who probably think they have better things to do than learning about the urinary system on a Friday afternoon, or keeping them engaged with the same. He's going to have some missteps learning the ropes and the realities of teaching outside of practice lesson plans and educator's edition textbooks.

Paternally Protective:
Stadler lost his only son without the opportunity to say goodbye; he's seen too many 19 year old's die in the desert, and the people he led into dangerous situations the may never return from just seemed to get younger as he grew older. It's safe to say he's sick of seeing the younger generation get cut short, and he'll do whatever it takes to avoid it. This includes getting involved in troubles his students are having, putting himself at risk if younger people are in danger, and doing what he can to keep teenage metahumans from putting themselves in the line of fire.

It includes glimpses of the entirety of Brood civilization, spanning eons and parts of the universe unknown to humanity. There is good news and bad. The good: they know where the bioweapons are being stored. The bad?
