Personality
Courageous:
When everything comes down to belief, Jane commits herself and holds the line. She doesn't shy away from the right choice simply because it is hard. Expect her to smile, throw a quip, and find it an opportune time to tighten her belt. High odds of failure invite ways to improve things to her benefit or search for alternate methods of success. Courage for her is taking the higher path, though the costs personally may be greater, and confronting a problem instead of hoping someone else takes care of it. She /is/ that someone else. That spirit is partly why Undrjarn and other artifacts of 'worthiness' are drawn to her.
Energetic:
Above all, Jane brims with energy and purpose guiding her in a hundred different directions. Spun up, she can be a force of nature, crackling with electricity and brilliantly charismatic. Not only about thinking but action, she often gathers many people up in the whirlwind of possibilities. Not much can slow her down for long, but her bubbling, buoyant energy is pointed thoroughly towards positive ends. She is the girl you want on your team trying to deal with problems or breaking down barriers.
Ennui:
"I know that I know nothing." - Plato
Ancient wisdom from Socrates to Lao Tzu reckoned the more you know, the more you know how little you have learned. Jane walks in the shadows of greater secrets out there in wider dark. Asgard tore open holes in 2,000 years of human science, and she glimpsed firsthand the vastly broadened horizons. For all the wonder and joy it sparked, sometimes this awareness casts a pall over everyday things and leaves Jane mentally exhausted, sometimes even depressed. She hasn't quite come to terms with being a citizen in the greater Nine Worlds, forced to look through a crack in the wall. Conversely she's not sure whether she really is prepared to step up to an enormous gift offered to her.
Overachiever:
You don't end up with three PhDs at a young age without a certain level of precociousness and a huge helping of overachievement. Jane is driven to know and learn out of sheer love of learning. Nonetheless, she has a guilt complex going on somewhere in there driving her to prove her worth by doing her utmost, being the best she can be, and going one hundred fifty percent all out. That may not be sustainable and it's completely unrealistic. She holds herself to a far higher standard than anyone else, and failing to meet her own expectations bothers her in the back of her mind.
Selfless:
But all I'm doing is what I swore I would do, when I was a little girl, standing over my mother's grave... We need a god who understands what it means to be humbled. To be mortal. A god who knows how precious life is. How delicate. A god who struggles everyday to live a worthy life. Who suffers so that no one else will have to. A god who loves the Earth enough to die for it.
-- Jane Foster
Jane puts others before herself, a habit since childhood. Her doctor mother's early death and almost heroic stature in Jane's mind played an important formative role. Helping others is the ideal she held herself against. She knew her father worked horrendous hours to give her a better life, and she repays the dividends by relentless concern for helping the community around her. Seeing children understand fundamental science to learn problem-solving and independent thinking skills or unlocking the intellectual quandaries of the universe isn't the same as physically stitching someone together on an ER table, but she makes her contributions. Again and again, she sacrifices for the greater good. Whether that's saving a vulnerable student from criminal activities or boosting a worthy project on social media, she's not in the game for a luxurious lifestyle or fame. It's to *do* good. Help those in need of aid, taking on the burden to free them up, and achieving the unattainable goal to give other hopes to try it. When hard choices come, she will make the sacrifice play for the good of the team.
Character Sheet
Powers
All-Speak:
All-Speak: At all times, Jane can understand and be understood in all the languages of the worlds of Yggdrasil, written or spoken. This may be limited by the creature?s intelligence.
Asgardian:
Jane is functionally Asgardian. She does not age and is nearly impervious to physical injury from conventional sources, able to shrug off firearms and even explosions. Energy and magical attacks do much less damage. She levitates or flies at very high speeds, even in space. She is among the fastest Asgardians, maintaining immense dexterity and fine-tuned reflexes. Her exceptional speed allows her to accomplish incredible acts of agility and coordination, intercepting attacks with Undrjarn while in flight, when combined with her acute perception.
Given her fearsome endurance, she can exert herself for up to a day at a time. She can recover from virtually any non-fatal wound and regenerate lethal wounds rapidly, within minutes to hours depending on the severity. She is impervious to mortal diseases and poisons, great extremes of temperature and radiation. She can survive unaided in space. She neither needs sleep, food nor air to survive, but she certainly enjoys them. The Valkyrie is swifter than many Asgardians and even parries or dodges bullets (if aware of them). Few Asgardians, save Thor or Angela, equal her physical might. When she exerts herself, she can perform godlike feats. A telepathic bond with Jane to empathically commune and transmit thoughts with the Valkyrior across any distance or even between many realms and demesnes.
Astral Traveller:
Valkyrie lives on the edge of reality. In either form, Jane can project a ghostly avatar of herself that acts wholly independently of her and interacts with spiritual or ethereal beings otherwise invisible to mortal perceptions. It retains her truesight and All-Speak. She is aware of all things her avatar does and is in perfect harmony with it, though the avatar's ability to perceive sounds and sights from the mortal world is severely hampered. Her astral form cannot be perceived by mundane senses unless she makes the effort to be visible or audible. Projecting into the Astral requires intense focus to simultaneously perform vigorous actions, like combat, in her corporeal form. While in this transformed state, her ethereal self has spiritual power proportional to her physical abilities. She can detect ripples and disruptions to the realm. Jane can also project herself physically into the Astral Realm but cannot bring along other people or excess baggage. Jane can unerringly 'home in' on Asgard's location via Astral travel.
Psychic:
Jane's three-year stint displaced in her astral form fundamentally altered her psyche. Powerful shields protect her from attempts to influence her mind or alter her memories and perceptions. Crafting a mental labyrinth entraps other presences or confounds mental control, though prolonged assaults are taxing on her concentration. Her astral form and aura reflect these psychic changes.
She can communicate telepathically with others in physical or astral form as long as she can sense them to establish the initial bond. These abilities include projecting, manipulating, and perceiving thoughts and emotions, shielding herself and others against mental attacks, reinforcing or manipulating the Astral realm, and interacting with ephemeral beings as if they are physically present. Due to her prolonged entrapment in the Underworld, spirits, the dead, or astral entities perceive her as a native to their realms and do not usually display hostility.
Startouched Physique:
The Genetic Council of Attilan and Jemma Simmons modified Jane's genetics during her long-term cryostasis to stabilize her. Along with the permanent changes brought by accepting Undrjarn, these biogenetic alterations render her compatible with an Inhuman and positively affected by exposure to terrigen or primagen.
Truesight:
Jane, as Valkyrie, sees the truth in all things. Even passively she is aware of the presence of spirits, ethereal entities, and magical energies or turmoils nearby. With supernatural senses, she can see invisible souls or hear whispers in a loud room. While transformed into a Valkyrie, this mystical sense extends into mystical applications to see the truth of the world. It fills her mind with hidden knowledge, weaknesses or overlooked insights. It can pierce many illusions or render others suspect. She sees the world in terms of complex symbolism, such as parasitic spells represented as crawling, spectral spiders, supernatural influences coloured by their origins, or shapeshifters in their true form. Certain entities, such as cosmic powers, can sicken or even overwhelm her if she stares too closely at them.
Valkyrja:
It is the duty and purpose of Valkyrie to act as a psychopomp, escorting the dead to the afterlife. Jane senses impending death through precognition, with the intensity growing with scale and immediacy of cessation of life. She determines causes of death by sight, and can perceive and interact with incorporeal entities. With Undrjarn, she can cross into any realm. Any fallen person is met with a projection of the Valkyrie that carries it through the Astral to the underworld. These ?echoes? can undertake no other task but to carry the spirit safely away. Valkyrie?s echoes appear without limit, even as the Valkyrie herself strides the battlefield. Should any one of the echoes be intercepted by malignant forces, all these echoes collapse into Valkyrie?s more robust Astral projection. Jane is immediately aware of the location and cause of any interruption of her duty.
Skills
Astrophysics:
Jane is a living prodigy in astrophysics. She is the greatest astronomical mind of the age, rooted in a fundamental understanding for the formation and behaviour of celestial bodies, the cosmological structure of the heavens, and the origin and evolution of the universe and its physics. Her groundbreaking studies into the physics of the cosmos have advanced human insight, particularly around dark energy, spatial distortions, and extraplanetary realms. With her insights into Asgard, the Bifrost, and the other nine realms, she is building a body of work where no human has really gone before, putting her at the forefront of science and a highly sought after associate with SHIELD, Wakanda, and other bodies. No pressure.
Combat:
Jane possesses a brown belt in Brazilian jujitsu and aikido, martial arts she took up as exercise and self-defense. Her rigorous study at SHIELD covers experience with firearms and ICERs, unconventional weapons under early tech development, and stunguns that she can deploy competently. She has developed formidable melee and ranged combat skills with archaic weapons, particularly swords, hammers, and weighted chains or whips. As a mortal, she's a respectable combatant. As Valkyrie, her combat prowess is vastly enhanced by her bond with Undrjarn and the near limitless repository at weapon forms at her fingertips. She continues to gain martial experience of her own as Valkyrie, so has considerable room to grow and learn additional techniques or tactics.
Emissary:
Due to her understanding of Asgard and other worlds, Jane holds a diplomatic relationship with the Asgardian embassy. That requires a careful balance of empathy and persuasive talents honed to deal with much longer-lived beings. She understands a good deal of the complicated political dynamics within Asgard and their interactions on Earth. Armed with knowledge about their culture and history, she can be seen as a friend and an excellent representative of Midgard among the Congress of Worlds if and when it forms.
Engineering:
Working at the bleeding edge of a field requires jury-rigging software and equipment for use in theoretical purposes. Most of her field equipment she constructed herself, and she continues to push the envelope on widely used methodologies today. She is technologically literate, which translates itself well to understanding other highly obscure fields (like Asgardian technology or other alien tech).
Linguistics:
Jane is fluent in English, Aesir, French, Latin, and Inhuman Royal Court sign language. She is conversational in Wakandan through frequent review of their scientific findings and communication with their scientists.
Medicine:
Jane nearly went into pre-med, and her passion for medicine almost rivals astronomy. She is fully competent in patching up mild and moderate injuries with a deep background in first aid procedures. She can competently diagnose and treat different injuries and illnesses, and effectively administer medication or therapy. However, she isn't Dr. Jane Foster, MD, and no one has licensed her.
Riding:
Jane is skilled at riding pegasi and other flying horses, and is moderately experienced in dealing with aerial combat.
Smart:
Jane is a girl genius. That is to say, she is a girl with a mind like a diamond and the necessary wits to learn, apply her knowledge usefully, and adapt accordingly.
Resources
Fame:
Jane's social media footprint outclasses some small countries. She has well over million followers eagerly lapping up her in-depth, clear analyses of cosmology, astrophysics, and astronomy. She features frequently on podcasts and television programs to talk about her discoveries in clear, public-friendly language.
Mr. Horse:
?Mr. Horse? has a real name, Grani, and he is from the same lineage as Sleipnir. Grani is as intelligent and articulate as most humans, using All-Speak, and has a fondness for fine culture and delicacies. His ?flight? can carry Jane anywhere she wishes, from the depths of space to the bottom of the ocean. Grani is familiar with the Astral Realm and can navigate its paths comfortably. At Jane?s command, Grani can instantly teleport himself anywhere along the branches of Yggdrasil and arrive at her side at the speed of thought. Grani is a greatly effective and intelligent fighter. He is strong enough to carry several tons of weight if needed and is as resistant to injury as most Asgardians.
Shield:
Jane is a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. after that little incident in New Mexico. They fund her esoteric research to a degree, providing materials and safe spaces for her to conduct her more volatile research. She agrees to pass on some of her more interesting findings. This makes for an uneasy relationship that has stood the test of the last few years, giving her a chance to direct her attention to the good of Earth.
Undrjarn:
Jane wears an Asgardian golden bracelet radiating immense power locked around her wrist. It's a beautifully crafted bangle with Asgardian runes that read "Whosoever bears me, if she be worthy, shall possess the power of the living and the dead."
Undrjarn is no mere bracelet, but a powerful Asgardian artifact born of the Mother of Storms and the sacred All-Weapon of the Valkyries. Made of uru, Undrjarn is nearly unbreakable except by profound mystical means. It cannot be removed without her consent, and seeks her of its own volition should they be parted. With a thought, it can change forms between different objects or weapons, like a spear, a hammer, a chain or a shield. The bracelet can be multiple objects at once, like wings, a mace, and a sword. Changing forms happens at the speed of thought. These items bear the same enchantment as the bracelet form.
Undrjarn grants flight at enormous speed through the atmosphere while protecting its wearer. In space, the bearer moves at magnitudes faster without danger. While flying, it takes the shape of great Asgardian golden wings even when used in its weapon form. Undrjarn may transport her and any accompanying souls to Valhalla, bypassing any seals, through hidden paths.
Valkyrie Armor:
Undrjarn summons enchanted armor of Asgardian design to protect Jane when she transforms or commands it. It bolsters her defenses considerably without compromising her speed or agility. Damage is self-repairing but serious damage may require an artisan?s repair. A strong illusion disguises her features and identity as Jane Foster while she is transformed, even without her helmet; only a few rare and potent entities, like the Sorcerer Supreme, can bypass or suppress it without Jane?s consent.
Valkyrior:
The Valkyrior stand as a sisterhood in Asgard and the other realms, bound to bring the honourable dead to their final resting place. As Valkyrie, she may call upon their assistance and expected help, but she is obligated to assist them in kind. Jane shares a psychic rapport with the living and fallen Valkyrior, strengthened by Undrjarn, enabling her to benefit from their guidance and company. She can commune with Valkyrior in Valhalla by concentrating. This power functions regardless of transformation.
Wealth:
Jane is a public celebrity of sorts, as far as a scientist in America without "Stark" or "Richards" attached to their name can be. She is a highly recognized, award-winning astronomer with a major social media presence. Her net worth stands somewhere around $5 million, though much of it is wrapped up in her personal research, funding projects for disadvantaged and underrepresented scientists, and owning a house with an actual lawn.
Work:
Jane has a small staff of astronomers and interns working for her as the director of the Hayden Planetarium. They perform critical research, engineering, and fieldwork. Most important of these are her mentor, Erik Selvig, and her assistant, Darcy Lewis, an astrophysics PhD candidate who collaborates directly with Jane on her most sensitive and elaborate projects.
Worthy:
As far as the Mother of Storms or the Valkyrior are concerned, Jane is worthy with a capital W. This translates into the ability to wield certain Asgardian artifacts dependent on worthiness in their various forms. Obviously, this includes Undrjarn. Worthiness, however, is a sliding scale and bad choices on Jane's part could absolutely prevent her from using them in the future.
Weaknesses
Accursed Echoes:
Malekith broke Jane's soul to conceal himself from death and she imprisoned him within that possession to prevent him from escaping. The ordeal left a shadowy echo of Malekith in her mind that sometimes plagues her with nightmares, a fragment that might be all that remains of the dark elf currently. She experiences Malekith's memories at unwelcome times, and waking hallucinations when the echo converses with her. Psychics and mystics can detect the stain of the darkest magics left behind, though she heals them over time. Abilities that perceive soul-forging or resurrection can't miss her.
Enemies:
We are outgunned, outmanned,
Outnumbered, outplanned,
We gotta make an all-out stand.
-- Hamilton
Allying herself to Asgard gives Jane a host of immortal enemies far more powerful, wily, and knowledgeable about weird topics than she is. They may have resources through magic she lacks. Brilliant as she is, she's outclassed and outmatched in many of these situations. Facing down a platoon of dark elves isn't fun.
Hidden Identity:
For now, she has a secret identity that could fall apart with missteps. Jane Foster has her own life, fame, and duties, ones she very much strives to hold onto. Her friends and coworkers remain protected when she keeps the Valkyrie side hidden. She has to work to maintain secrecy and account for any absences, odd behaviours, or knowledge about things Jane wouldn?t know. Some might realize she?s holding something back. Catching her on a technicality is certainly possible despite her best intentions, and it might be off-putting to more sensitive people.
Higher Calling:
As the Valkyrie, Jane answers to a higher power - life itself. Her solemn duty to the undefended souls of the Nine Realms comes before her personal desires. Death doesn't wait on normal business hours or appointments. Souls seek her out for help, and they aren?t patient. Her sisters may call on her for assistance and "no" is not an acceptable answer. Equipped to deal with these demands, she doesn't get to ignore them unless already engaged in her sacred task as a psychopomp. If Jane dies, she can choose to pass to the afterlife as a mortal or surrender her mortality and stay a full Asgardian.
Hippocratic Oath:
Jane's mother taught her about the sanctity of life. Jane swore to honour the Hippocratic Oath as a young woman, which amounts to "First, do no harm." It serves as a seminal articulation of her ethical code, holding paramount significance to protect, heal, and defend. She avoids violence as a solution until all other alternatives are exhausted, and even then, she uses the minimal amount of force necessary to conclude a situation. Her foremost concern is helping others by protecting them.
Truesight:
Using her Truesight causes Jane?s eyes to glow violet in a subtle but distinct supernatural signature. Cosmic forces examined by her truesight can confuse or overwhelm her, leaving her stunned for several seconds. Truly catastrophic insights may render her temporarily comatose.
Vessel:
Asgardian gods have an uncommon problem with disembodiment or being cast out of their home in astral form. For reasons known only to Odin and Frigga, Jane is perhaps the foremost mortal vessel on Midgard for these displaced souls. They can sense her as such, too. Any of the Asgardians, Vanir, ljosalfar or svartalfar can share her body while retaining their powers, though she usually retains control over whether she lets her passenger 'drive.' Due to her Hippocratic Oath, Jane is far more disposed to rendering this sort of aid to benevolent or allied Asgardian powers.
