Timeline:
* 1987: Born in Bournemouth, England. At the time his maternal grandmother, Gertrude, is the Archivist.
* 1989: Jon's father dies from a fall.
* 1993: Jon's mother dies, seemingly due to complications of routine surgery. He moves in with his paternal grandmother. He becomes a "difficult" child, often wandering off and having difficulty sitting still.
* 1995: A strange figure Jon will never quite remember clearly afterward attempts to kidnap him. His grandmother's handyman (who never liked Jon) intervenes and disappears along with the kidnapper. The encounter leaves Jon with survivor's guilt and a newly developed capacity for perfect recall.
* 1996: Jon's grandmother puts him in therapy after several months of unrelenting nightmares of the kidnapping. None of the the therapy sessions go well, but Jon develops an interest in mental health.
* 2005: Jon goes to Oxford to study psychiatry. He makes several good friends, including his future husband. His perfect recall allows him to be at or near the top of his class with ease.
* 2007: Jon gets involved in a cult to the Eye of Ra, led by a man named Elias Bouchard. Most of his friends get pulled in as well.
* 2008: As Jon is trying to pull out of the Eye of Ra cult, a fire burns down the house on Hill Top Road, Oxford, where the group lives. Jon and his then-boyfriend Martin escape, and decide to move away from England to get away from Elias. Jon takes a year off for "de-programming." Martin's daughter Lyra moves to America to live with them.
* 2009: Jon enters the Columbia University psychiatric medicine program.
* 2011: Jon and Martin get married. Jon adopts Lyra.
* 2013: Jon finishes his MD and enters internship. He spends his internship and the first year of residency at Arkham Asylum, under the mentorship of Hugo Strange. Disgusted with the conditions, he finishes his residency in Metropolis.
* 2017: Jon finishes postgraduate training and starts practicing, specifically treating trauma patients.
* 2018: Loki's assault on New York leaves Martin badly injured and Lyra dead. Jon's practice swells with people who have PTSD from the events.
* 2021: Jon's grandmother dies in mysterious circumstances and Jon wakes the next morning to find himself with telepathic and empathic powers. Shortly after, he is attacked by assassins. Martin tries to defend him and fakes his own death; Jon is injured but lives and flees to find help.

Personality

Acerbic:
Outwardly, Jon can sometimes seem acerbic and abrasive. Some of this is learned, a product of academic professionalism and English reserve. Some of it is a defense mechanism. Jon's perfect recall combined with his kind nature makes him easily hurt, and so he puts on a kind of outer armor of dry jokes, sarcastic comments, and practiced glares. Some of it, however, is just that however kind and soft he might be, he can also be a smug, know-it-all bastard at times. His questions are often sharp and pointed, and he relishes a good debate or chance for witty banter.

Compassionate:
Jon is, at his core, a kind and compassionate person. He is prone to worrying about people, both individually and humanity as a whole. When he sees suffering he is moved to try to help, and is often frustrated when he cannot. He is aware of his own weaknesses, which is why he chose to study medicine and become a psychiatrist rather than try to be a hero. He will go out of his way to help even those who have wronged him, though he'll need good reason to do so. He wants to believe the best of people, and can forgive many things--though not everything. At home and with those he trusts he is open and vulnerable, preferring smiles and comfort to any kind of prolonged brooding.

Curious:
Jon has always been curious, even before Thoth made "ask penetrating questions" a mission statement for his life. He's always been prone to poking his nose in where it wasn't wanted, asking awkward or too-personal questions, and spending too much time chasing down every detail of whatever subject has caught his interest today. He loves puzzles and mysteries, and though he'll deny it he really does love gossip. His recent elevation to the position of Archivist has only enhanced that natural curiosity; where once he could maybe ignore the impulse to find out what's going on behind closed doors or chase down some secret, now he has a mystic imperative to do so.

Stubborn:
Jon would say he is not a brave man, and in many ways he is not. He's not the type to volunteer for heroics, and deliberately chose a life of the mind because any terrifying and dangerous event will live with him forever. Jon is, however, very stubborn, and that stubborn nature has gotten him into trouble. He will chase down leads to satisfy his curiosity and flout rules if it means sticking to his own ethical principles. Once he gets his teeth into something he's not likely to let it go, and he's been known to bring up old arguments a decade or more later.

Talkative:
Jon will talk your ear off if you let him. The particular term is "infodump"; he knows a lot of random things about a lot of random things, and has a tendency to start talking about obscure trivia and deep details of subjects at the slightest mention. Ask him a question and brace for an answer that will include far more information than you really wanted--or maybe just as much as you really wanted, if you like that sort of thing. He's learned to be a good listener, and is quite willing to let others talk his ear off, too. Luckily for everyone around him, Jon has a good speaking voice.

Archivist Duties:
The Archivist is a position that has been passed down for generations and thousands of years, at least since the days of the Old Kingdom. The position was originally called "Watcher," and was created in the aftermath of the exodus of the homo magi. The title of "The Archivist" started in the last days of the Ptolemaic, when those who held the title served in the Serapeum of Alexandria.

The Archive was created by Neith, an ancient deity whose name was rarely spoken, at the behest of the Archangel Uriel. The Watchers and later Archivists were given in service to the gods of Duat--Anubis, Thoth, Ma'at, and Osiris. The original function of the role that would become the Archivist was to allow the gods to judge those who would not die in the normal course of matters. To that end, the Archivist's original duty was to take statements about the lives of those they encountered, storing them for later use, and they worked as temple scribes to further that purpose.

Over time, their duties changed and expanded, and now the Archivist's purpose is to serve as a living recorder. The first way they do this is by simply living, driven by insatiable curiosity to experience as much of life as possible, even dangerous and potentially deadly situations.

The second is by drawing statements out of the people they encounter. Some are unwilling, but many people find the chance to unburden their souls to be cathartic. The Archivist's telepathy allows the story to be told in a coherent and interesting fashion, and can easily serve as a kind of "monologue trigger." Jon's own work as a therapist is in some ways a subconcious attempt to perform this duty.

On their death, the Archivist's knowledge is sent to the Archive, a sort of library on the Astral Plane still tended by the spirits of prior Archivists. A good Archivist, one who throws themself into dangerous situations and collects many stories from others, will find themselves living longer, as they've been of more use to their patron.

Avatar of Ma'at:
Jon is able to merge with his patron deity, Ma'at, and transform into a direct avatar of her power for brief periods of time. There are several effects of this transformation:

* Enhanced Magic: Jon's magical ability and telepathy both increase in power while transformed. This does not allow him to do anything he's normally incapable of doing, but rather allows him to push his will and focus beyond his normal limitations.
* Enhanced Healing: Wounds Jon receives while in this form heal at an exponential rate, double his normal healing time (which is double the baseline human time, so quadrupled.)
* Wings: The transformation summons a pair of wings that Jon can use to hover and fly at decent speeds, along with the knowledge needed to manuever in the air.
* Portals: When in this state, Jon is able to create portals to other realms, by summoning a door and walking through. He is able to take himself to other dimensions, but can only send others back to their home dimension--thus, he could return a group from Hell or the Astral Plane, but not take them there to begin with.
* Ma'at's Feather: The Feather of Truth that Jon gains upon his brow allows him to show those from whom he has taken a statement the impact they have made on the world and on others. This may be a negative impact, such as a criminal feeling the fear and pain they've caused to their victims, but it may also be used to help people see the good they've done and the love others have for them.

There are a few drawbacks to this form. Firstly, for every hour Jon spends transformed, he must spend an extra hour sleeping the next night. Second, the longer he's transformed, the more Ma'at takes over his thinking. He can remain merged with her and somewhat himself for about two hours, before Ma'at will begin to completely take over. The transformation cannot last longer than twelve hours, after which time he will revert to baseline.

Dreams:
Jon has dreams of past Archivists, re-living their memories and stories they have gathered. These dreams are not available to his perfect recall, and act more as guidance from his gods and his ancestors than anything he can control. He has learned to lucid dream, and is able to ask questions and investigate the memories. He has a strong connection to the Astral Plane.

Jon also regularly re-lives statements he's gathered, cycling through them night after night. This is in some ways a weakness, as it means his dreams might wind up including re-living villainous monologues or his friends' and patients' stories of trauma and pain. It can be useful at times, however, as he's learned to control his dreams.

Fate Sense:
His ties to Ma'at allow Jon to read flows of fate, not so much seeing the future as extrapolating from the present based on probabilities. He can sense the easiest path through a maze, or the potential outcome of a battle, though not with perfect clarity. Things that are pre-ordained are stronger and more obvious, and the more he knows about a subject, the better he can predict its flow. This power is much stronger when he's transformed into a true avatar of Ma'at, and much muddier when he's just himself.

Language Understanding:
The Archive gives Jon the ability to comprehend, read, and write any human language. He cannot necessarily speak these languages. The Archive provides the ability to speak only languages former Archivists have spoken. This includes several ancient languages like Egyptian and Aramaic; European language families; and several dialects of Arabic. He has a middling ability with Cantonese and Mandarin. Jon himself also speaks Hindi and Marathi, but outside of these major cities he is very unlikely to be able to speak with rare rural dialects.

Magical Ability:
Jon is able to pull constructs from the Astral Plane onto the physical, imagining them and then willing them into being, which is about as difficult as it sounds. It's draining, particularly for attempts to manifest complex items or things that go against his usual nature. Water, healing, purification, and order are all easier and more natural to him than fire, destruction, pain, and chaos. Channeling the power through word or gesture or magical instrument makes it easier, but it's still an effort of will and imagination.

This ability is only limited by his imagination, and yet bounded in by it: for instance, he can summon doors to act as portals to far-flung places in the material realm, though he must know precisely where he's going. His ability to heal is both helped and restricted by his medical knowledge; his healing ability acts to speed up natural healing, and leaves scars. He tends to think in terms of elements or music with his magic.

Jon also has the mystic Sight, able to see spirits and ghosts, magical constructs, the Astral Plane, and other such things. As this is one of the primary duties of the Archivist--to see, know, and experience--his Sight is expansive and able to pick up on most mystical events; whether or not he /understands/ what he's seeing is another question. (He cannot, for instance, understand Enochian script even if he can See it. And it would probably give him a headache.)

He 'sees' many things on a regular basis, such as spirits and obvious magical residue. With a moment to focus and 'open' his Sight, he can See a great deal. What he Sees might be overwhelming or dangerous, and due to his perfect recall will stick with him forever.

Perfect Recall:
Jon remembers absolutely everything he has ever seen or heard, since about the age of eight. Recalling this information can take a moment, as he enters a brief trance to re-live the memory. If this is done deliberately, he can pick out details he hadn't consciously noticed. When the information comes up without being under his control, he will be seized by the desire to re-live the entire memory or relay the entirety of the pertinent information, though he can be stopped, and may be able to learn to stop himself. He will often write down what he's experienced regardless in order to keep a record and keep from having to enter trance in order to remember.

Phlogiston Body:
Jon merged with a goddess after his return from the dead. His new body is a construct held together by his and Ma'at's combined will. He's resistant to infection and disease. He can regenerate from most damage, but particularly noteworthy or meaningful injuries (such as his missing arm) may not ever heal.

His body does not shed hair, blood, or skin cells. Samples taken from him will persist only as long as some willpower sustains the missing parts. His scent is distinctly different, and his aura brighter than a mortal's. He still has a heartbeat. Sustaining his harmony requires him to eat and drink, and substances such as alcohol and nicotine still affect him. Hunger and thirst are more metaphysical concepts to him now and he is better sustained by godly ambrosia than human foods.

Telepathy:
Jon is a mid-range telepath. Most of his abilities are focused around gathering information, and almost always rely on being within sensory range of the target. His telepathy works at a distance through phone calls and video, again relying on his senses rather than true distance. He can read minds on a surface level and slightly deeper, read emotions, and can project both thoughts and emotions at others. He cannot modify memories in any way, nor can he dig into deep thoughts or tell if someone's lying unless he extracts a statement.

* Statements: Jon can enter a trance state in which he can extract a statement from a place or person. The story of the statement must be one of deep emotional resonance, and is not the truth of what happened but rather the version of events that the person whose perspective he is taking believes is true. If the subject is not around, Jon will go into this trance and narrate the statement in the first person; if the subject is around, they will find themself compelled to give their statement to Jon, who will experience it along with them as if he had experienced the events himself. Jon is very irritable if distracted from this trance, and will do almost anything to finish a statement that is interrupted.

Skills

Collecting:
Jon collects various things. Old books, currency, odd rocks. Aside from knowing details of what he collects, he has experience tracking down odd items and haggling prices and the like.

Cooking:
Jon is a very good home cook, and the sort of person who spends money he probably shouldn't on high-end cookware he doesn't really need. Cooking is one way he takes care of people, though, and while it's not Michelin star quality it's good. He prefers hearty foods but has been known to experiment with desserts.

Egyptology:
Jon's grandmother, the former Archivist, instilled a love of Egyptology in him at an early age. He knows a /lot/ about... well, he knows a lot about what the modern world knows about ancient Egypt. His knowledge might be entirely wrong.

Medical Doctor:
Though Jon does not have the post-doctoral training that even a GP would have, he /is/ a medical doctor, liscened to prescribe medicine in three states. He understands biology and anatomy and could respond to emergencies if need be. He's not an expert in any of those things, but could be called upon in a pinch.

Psychiatry:
Jon is a licsened psychiatrist, with permission to practice in New York, New Jersey, and Delware, though he mainly works in New York City. He trained at Columbia, which is one of the top schools in the world for the discipline. His particular specialty is in PTSD and other conditions resulting from trauma. He favors a "holistic" approach, as likely to prescribe exercise or art as he is to give his patients medications. He has been practicing since 2017, and his practice became very busy in 2018 in the aftermath of Loki's attack on the city. His training helps him in social situations as well; he understands human behavior, and has training in crisis management and de- escalation.

Religious Scholar:
Jon has long had interest in religious history and doctrine, starting with his upbringing as an Anglican and branching into every major religion around the globe. He's studied theology and psychology of religion both, has memorized many religious texts, and has at least passing knowledge of many minor faiths.

SHIELD Training:
Jon has SHIELD training appropriate to his rank. He's been working on physical training and conditioning, hand-to-hand skills with a focus on throws and avoiding blows, and marksmanship. He's also learning the sorts of things that go with working for a covert agency such as espionage, stealth, tactics, and military operations.

Theater Nerd:
Jon has enough of a passion for the theatre that he actually considered majoring in it briefly. He's been in shows in secondary and university, he even had a theatrical cabaret band for a time in Oxford. He's done amateur shows from time to time since. He can sing and dance, and he's a good actor.

Addiction:
Jon has an obsessive sort of personality, and is addicted to both caffeine and cigarettes. He knows there's an irony there, given that he's a medical doctor, and it's made him sympathetic to those who medicate their problems with substances. Cigarettes are one of the few things that can help calm him after a particularly bad intrusive memory, and he finally gave up trying to avoid smoking after Loki's invasion of New York.

Ascended Mortal:
Jon's soul has been changed by his death and he is no longer truly mortal. He finds it difficult to be as adaptive as mortals are, and the concerns of mortals are increasingly less intuitive for him. He's driven by motivations that are in keeping with his Harmony--to seek out new information, to investigate mysteries and unravel secrets, to help bring others and the universe into balance. He must do these things as much as he must eat and drink, or he will start to lose his power.

Moreover, the Archivist is a known quantity in the supernatural world and has to contend with his own enemies as well as Ma'at's. Even people with no interest in the Egyptian gods might want to steal some flesh from Ma'at's personal demigod.

Cult Survivor:
Jon was sucked into a cult in college, the Eye of Ra. He is susceptible to emotional manipulation and isolation, and vacillates between being too trusting and too wary of new people. He's also prone to obsessions and behaviors learned during his time in the cult, particularly when he doesn't understand something. A true mystery can lead him down a dangerous and potentially self-destructive spiral as he tries to unravel it.

Ib (Heart):
Jon will do just about anything in his power to help the people he cares about. He's overcome significant threats and barriers to help friends and family. Threats to their safety are the quickest way to manipulate him, although he'll react in anger more than fear. He'd rather talk someone down than engage in a fight, and he's willing to become friends with just about anyone, even--maybe especially--former enemies. Fighting is his last resort.

This is also a quite literal weakness: the heart is the seat of the soul in ancient Egyptian theology. A significant blow to the heart would likely kill him. Even if his body could be re-formed, there would be permanent damage of some kind, memory loss or personality change.

Intrusive Memories:
Jon's perfect recall has a major drawback--he remembers every terrible thing that has ever happened to him. The memories are prone to coming upon him when triggered, sending him into his trance state and forcing him to re-live the memory. That was why he left England--too many things reminded him of lost friends and family. He's become more used to it now, better able to recognize the triggers, but for Jon time does not soften memories or heal mental wounds. The pain is still there as fresh as the day it happened.

Ma'at:
Jon must abide by the seven ideals of /mat'at/: truth, balance, order, harmony, law, morality, and justice. There is a natural order to the universe, and the Archivist is meant to help uphold that order. He must avoid spreading chaos, defend the poor and weak, remain loyal to his friends and associates. Balance is key, respecting the ebb and flow of life.

As an avatar of Ma'at, Jon /cannot/ violate many of these principles. He cannot lie, and he finds himself unable to act in ways that would bring him too far out of balance or harmony with his purpose.

Recording:
Ironically enough for a "living recorder," Jon has begun to experience a compulsion to record his experiences and statements. This is linked to the Archivists' original work as temple scribes, and serves as a physical backup in case of mystical destruction of portions of the Archive. If he doesn't record on a regular basis, he gets irritable and tired, much like with statements.

Statements:
If Jon does not receive new statements on a regular basis--about one a week, at least--he begins to go through a sort of withdrawal. He gets fidgety and irritable, then tired and drawn, and eventually might be driven to seek out new statements over almost anything else.

Path of Glory: Work of Heroes (Mark II)	December 11th, 2021	A rush to save the final victim of the Palpal Killer results in a combat of the mind and the body as a possessed Chas Chandler is discovered to be the culprit. The combined forces of Witchblade, The Archivist, Rien D'Arqueness, and an Awakened Lasariel Weiss manage to wear it down enough to bind it and release its hold over the mind of Cael Becker.
Through the Valley of the Shadow	December 11th, 2021	After the JLD's battle with the angel inhabiting Chas, Jon takes a walk to Rockefeller Center. Martin finds him there, slowly unraveling from the events of the day--and finally insists that he take a break. The universe will survive for another couple of days, at least.

Reconciliation, Part I	October 29th, 2021	Instead of meeting Tim's fist, Martin just meets Tim. And Lonnie, too! But only for a little bit before he and Tim get into a fight. Awkward. Tim and Jon bring Martin up to speed on the whole book situation afterward, though, so at least it was a semi-productive meetup. Shame that everyone but Martin has lost their appetite by the end, though, because Onion Maiden is really just that good.
Occupational References	October 28th, 2021	Martin brings Jon to SHIELD HQ to meet with the Chief. Tea is had, (because of course it is with three Brits in a room,) and Jon is designated a probationary agent among the ranks. And, because it wouldn't be SHIELD without earth shattering events in the making, Jon gives them both their first impromptu mission together. What a first day!
Meet the Scrubs	October 28th, 2021	Jon and Martin head to the food court as order by Chief Carter, and run into a variety of other SHIELD agents. Sam Wilson, Jessica Drew, Michael Erickson, and Jane Foster are all there, and they discuss various matters over food.
A Difficult Reunion	October 27th, 2021	Jon and Martin head home. There's a tense and awkward conversation before Martin discovers just how far down the spiral of madness Jon has gone in his absence.
The Last Archivist: Family Feud	October 27th, 2021	Jon visits his daughter's grave with his friends Tim and Zatanna along, but doesn't have a chance to mourn before his cousin attacks. She should have been Archivist, but she made a deal with a demon and Jon got the position instead. She tries to kill him, but Jon's friends--and Venom--hold her and the assassins off. Jon's husband turns out to be alive, and he's the one who kills Sasha--right before Tim punches him in the face!

Everyone is okay, in the sense that none of them are okay but they're all making attempts in their own ways to pretend that they are. Alfred Pennyworth remains the best butler in the world.

Birthright: The Village	October 18th, 2021	Rated R for language, depiction of corpses, scorpions attempting to eat John's earthly tether. John Constantine leads Zatanna Zatara, Jon Sims and Moon Knight into an investigation to try to find the last person Leksandria, the Necromancer better known as ASENATH or THE LADY IN RED (or in John's opinion 'dead woman, that bitch'). John crosses paths with Paisi again, and Zatanna, Jon and Moon Knight get to make acquaintences with the ghost of Phoebe Beacon's mother. They see the condition of the souls left trapped in the web around the village. There is blood in the water now, and it's a matter of time until John claims a red coat for his adoptive daughter's suffering.
Fallout	October 17th, 2021	When Phoebe is taken to Thompkin's Clinic to recover and keep her identity out of the news as well as provide a discreet meeting place, things get less than discrete. John Brings in an Expert to contend with the black magic. Tim stands up for the people in recovery, Lydia agrees to take point on the Thinnings for a short while. Jubilee finds out the finer points of teenage adoption after bringing the right/wrong balloons. Next stop: The boarder of Egypt and Sudan, Village in the Reeds... to find the last person who was killed by this curse embedded now in Phoebe Beacon's shoulder.
A Test for the Fist	October 17th, 2021	Moon Knight travels to the place of his creation and is tested in both resolve and self-restraint by the one who gives him strength.
How do I Choose...	October 16th, 2021	Jon stumbles on a manic, panicked John that has so much on his plate he doesn't even know where to start or what to do first. In the end, John has it straight in his head, what needs to be on the front burners and what needs to be on the back.
Gotham Fireman's Ball	October 16th, 2021	-Nothing bad could ever happen at a Gotham Gala. Interrupting the Fireman's Gala in which orphans were supposed to recognize their passed parents, many of Gotham's Heroes are forced to contend with creatures constructed of former Gotham Gate editor-and-owner, Mickey Rogers. In the fighting, Phoebe Beacon(-Constantine-Chandler) is injured, and her powers are failing to heal. After being stabilized by Tim Drake for her initial injury, and John Constantine for all other maladies and protections physicial, spiritual and magical, under the supervision of one Dr. Jonathan Sims (AKA ThothDad). A Goth Schoolteacher walks into a bar...	October 16th, 2021	Lydia comes to the Laughing Magician to talk to John, but finds Jon instead. The Archivist and the new vampire have a chat about her 'condition.'
Turning a Kitten into a Cat.	October 16th, 2021	When one of Nettie's kittens comes into the bar whining about her helplessness and feelings of inadequacies, she gets a crash course in magic and 'buck up buttercup' from John. Mairin also manages to gain Nettie's ire. Little kitten to cat, it might take awhile, but hopefully she'll get there.
Trouble in Paradise	October 15th, 2021	After the events of "Vanished," John is fine, but the Archivist is not. There's a fight, and then Chas is reasonable, because of course he is. There are sandwiches, hugs, and ultimately someone's sleeping under the blue carebear blanket. But what is John up to in the back room...?

The Laughing Magician came through the final battle mostly fine for a change. But then Jubilee nearly killed him without even knowing she was doing so. Another day ending in Y, innit?
