Profile
Zatanna Zatara is a famed stage magician known publicly for her viral performances on social media and her wildly popular Las Vegas residency in 2020. She makes selective appearances on stage, television, and film.
The Mistress of Magic lives in the limelight of public fame and public disbelief in the mystic arts. She acts as a magical heavyweight in the Justice League, devoted to their mission to protect the world from myriad dangers. She possesses tremendous sorcerous potential and occult knowledge to put towards the powers of good.
Timeline
Timeline:
* 1994 - Zatanna Zatara, the Princess of Prestidigitation, is born to Giovanni "John" Zatara and Sindella, a Homo Magi member of Muhruuk race. Realizing her newborn daughter's latent powers, Sindella fakes her death to cloak her child's presence from the corrupting influence of Dormammu.
* 2004 - After years of being raised by her father in the shadow of the stage, ten-year-old Zee is introduced to the world as Giovanni's new stage assistant. She spends the next eight years touring with her father, training in both the arts of real magic and illusion/sleight of hand magic and how to mask the two.
* 2012 - Giovanni attempts to assist the newly formed Justice League of America during the Alien Alliance and in a battle with Allura, vanished. Zatanna is left orphaned just shy of her 18th birthday.
* 2014 - After two years of fruitless searching for her father, Zatanna turns her attention to the stage and carrying on her father's legacy. The Mistress of Magic does a world tour that is highly successful and draws the attention of Las Vegas.
* 2017 - Zatanna's stage and magic show starts a three-year residency at the MGM Grand. She uses her wealth to expand her occult connections and deal with supernatural forces.
* 2020 - Zatanna ends her residency and returns to Shadowcrest in Gotham to deal with corrupted spirits and demons. She joins the Justice League.
* 2021 - She is among the founding members of the Justice League Dark and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, devoting herself to mentoring other mystics and handling magical threats.
* 2022-2023 - She assists the JLA with establishing the Atlantic Spaceport. Malekith and his dark elves attack the spaceport and her dear friends. She allies with several Asgardian gods, mutants, and vigilantes to turn the tides on invasion.
* 2024 - Zatanna takes over a local storefront to provide a legitimate venue for sorcerous assistance, and continues to provide aid to the Justice League, Birds of Prey, and others.

Personality
Ambivert:
It goes hand-in-hand with the loneliness and being aloof as well as her career. Zatanna is brilliant at playing the extrovert. She can be the life of the party, she can bask in the attention (she'd be a bad stage magician if she couldn't). She socializes like a pro. However, she absolutely savors her downtime as well and can be just as happy at home, alone, with a cup of tea and a good book. In fact, there are times after a big show that she needs this downtime.
Confident:
The power to change the world requires supreme confidence and certainty. Zatanna possesses heaps of charisma and willpower, and she's practically larger than life in every moment. Witty and passionate, she always has a ready rejoinder or a quip. Sometimes this warmth tilts a bit mischievous, though never intentionally cruel. Her extensive fanbase loves her for a reason, and that comes across as a deeply rooted sense of confidence that warmly engages with others. She has self-assurance, for the most part, in who she is and what she stands for. Her vibrant magnetism burns like a star, honed by years of performance. When she's on, few things can dent her self-assurance in the world. She blossoms when the pressure is on, revelling in creative solutions and overcoming challenges set before you. Whether trying to draw attention to a cause or fight through the darkest nights, Zee is a girl you want at your back. Her light won't fail.
Creative:
Zatanna's signature trademark lies in her ability to pull literally something from a universal hat. She has a creative streak light years wide, a fundamental principle of her magic. Magic at her command requires a clear vision and purpose to execute effectively, so naturally she conceptualizes with thge full range of her senses. She eschews rigid thinking, naturally spinning ideas wholecloth in complete abundance. Looking at a problem presents a dozen opportunities of varying feasibility. Never content to sit still, she looks at the world from countless different facets and tinkers with known principles just to see what happens. Boundless creative energy infuses every project and occasionally produces analysis paralysis, since beholding everything she could potentially do doesn't always give the clearest path for what is needed in the moment.
Driven:
Call it tenacity, call it obsessive: Zatanna has a drive to know anything and everything. However, it is a thirst not just for knowledge, but also for wisdom. She is very thorough and very careful in whatever she applies herself to: be it a new skill, a new routine, or even a new lead on finding her father. This drive has also manifested in being the best out of a desire to do her father proud.
Outspoken:
This is not a time to be silent or silenced. Zatanna speaks out on the things she believes in, and she doesn't hold back when she feels a matter needs to be raised. Sometimes this puts her in a tough spot, as remaining silent would be easier but not better. Not everyone appreciates being called out.
Responsible:
Zatanna is a very powerful magician and sorceress. Her full potential is unknown, but she is undoubtedly much more powerful than her father (who was a powerful magician in his own right). To date, the only true limit to Zatanna's power has been that of her imagination. To that end, she has a strong sense of obligation: to herself, to others, and to doing the right thing. She tries to live, work, and operate within means. She tries to keep from imbalancing systems. She understands the ways of the world and the fact that, say, generating 'infinite money' would cause problems elsewhere. Everything in moderation, including moderation.
Self-Doubt:
Outwardly, Zatanna projects an air of confidence. She is a capable woman who can do anything she sets her mind to. However, deep down, she is full of uncertainty and self-doubt and it can weigh very heavily upon her soul. There are many times where this does cause her power to falter (though it is rare). Confidence is vital to her power and so she must push through, despite whatever doubt she might harbor.

Powers
Astral Projection:
Through meditation, Zatanna's consciousness can leave her physical body and travel to other planes of existence. These trips can only last 24 hours before she has to return to her body to 'ground' herself.
Decelerated Aging:
Zatanna benefits from decelerated aging. She'll weather centuries as if they were decades, and can retain her youthly appearance and vigor indefinitely. This makes her highly resistant to spells or biological effects that cause rapid aging. It does not render her immune to sickness, disease, or infirmity. This power doesn't restore missing sight or limbs, or heal major injuries. Homo Magi tend to live dangerous lives and accidents and misadventure can kill and cripple them as readily as anything else.
Elemental Control:
Zatanna has power over the various elements (outside of her logomancy). This includes, but is not limited to: pyrokinesis, cyrokinesis, electrokinesis, hydrokinesis, geokinesis, aerokinesis, photokinesis, and umbrakinesis. While it is most often beneficial for her stage shows, it can and has come in handy when she's been under attack and had to defend herself. She is not as studied and trained in control of the elements (as they are very powerful things in their own right) and use of them is often wild and unpredictable, but she can do it.
Energy Blasts:
Zatanna can summon eldritch energy to project as a weapon. These blasts generally cause physical pain more than exerting force. On average, they can knock the average person unconscious. The upper end, like most of her magic, is unknown.
Illusions:
Zatanna can fool an entire theater audience's worth of people into seeing whatever she wants them to see, hearing whatever she wants them to hear, smelling whatever she wants them to smell, etc. These illusions range in realism based on her concentration, e.g. making someone hear a lion roar behind them vs. making a false Kang speak to his minions. Between her father's instructions, time in theater as a magician, and her own practice, illusions come to her almost as easily as breathing. However, they are illusions: she can't make someone blind see something that isn't there. If someone tries to move through an illusory wall, it won't stop them.
Logomancy:
The power of words, both written and spoken, has been Zatanna's birthright for as long as she can remember. She can cast spells by speaking them backwards, writing them down in blood, or even using sign language, and in doing so, could exact her will and whim upon the physical world. The effects of logomancy function are, in effect, reality manipulation that can include effects like healing (though not resurrection); elemental manipulation and conjuration; altering luck; conjuration; transmutation of beings, objects or forces, including changes of state; teleportation; power nullification; shielding; and mental alterations, including telepathy and alteration (done almost never; see +weaknesses). Given her relatively young age, however, she is still exploring her limitations in that arena, and while her potential is borderline limitless, what she can actually do with it lie in the realm of experimentation and experience.
Shields:
Zatanna can use magic to create shields that protect her or others from physical force. Their strength hinges on her concentration. If she was in a fight with the Hulk, he would win, because she'd probably be too scared of a rampaging Hulk to completely concentrate. She can also redirect energy weapons, including magic, back to their wielder or toward another enemy. She can create multiple shields, but again: it is a matter of concentration and reaction time. So while she might have a shield on another individual, adding a second on herself when she's shot at might be outside the realm of possibility.
Sight:
As a homo magi (Mhuruuk), Zatanna naturally senses the invisible world around her. She constantly detects flows of magic, spells, enchanted objects, divine traces, practitioners, and even inherently magical beings. Passive awareness offers baseline information like proximity, relative strength, and distinguishing between sources. Focusing gives much greater finesse and range. She can see and speak with ghosts or spirits, name a spell effect, or register arcane signatures of different sorcerers. Due to her inherently magical nature, Zatanna cannot suppress this power and she cannot be overwhelmed by mystical signatures.
Sorcery:
When not using Logomancy, Zatanna falls back on a deep and abiding knowledge of classical sorcery rooted in her homo magi origins, the Mystic Arts, and western practices. She is a Master of the Mystic Arts, personally instructed by her father, and capable of casting a broad range of spells from personal lore, grimoires, and in tandem with other sorcerers. The span of her spell work leaves very few corners of the arcane untouched, though she has a strong predilection for subtle arts, such as illusions, protective shields, manipulation of forces, warding and banishment, teleportation, divination, and mental artsn (mind shields, invisibility, and concealing emotions or evoking emotions). She is fully capable of more offensive magic, like blasts; counterspells; elemental conjuration; chronokinesis; summoning, and manipulating her deep personal magical reserves. Her education leaves her deeply versed in all aspects of the arcane, including ritual magic, arcane and divine beings, artifacts, and sacred places. She prefers logomancy as her singular area of focus, but her arcane heritage expresses itself in highly nuanced sorcery that ranks her among the top-tier of spellcasters on Earth.
Summoning:
With the use of her magical library, Zatanna can conduct rituals to summon ghosts, demons, and other extra-dimensional magic entities. Based on the rite, they may be bound in place, forced to answer questions, etc., so long as the integrity of the magical ritual is maintained.
Telekinesis:
Zatanna can use magic to make objects move according to her will. She can lift another average-sized human being into the air through magic without breaking a sweat. With extreme concentration and preparation, she could do something along the lines of lifting an entire auditorium out of their seats.
Telepathy:
Zatanna can use magic to project her thoughts to others around her, or facilitate 'silent' communication between an Avengers-sized group. She is theoretically able to go into others' minds, view memories, and alter them, but just like her transformation powers, the risk level of screwing around with a living thing is so high, and the consequences so unpredictable, with no guarantee of a lasting effect, that she stays away from it.
Teleportation:
Zatanna can teleport herself with little effort around the world by opening a portal (it is not instantaneous: it is akin to opening a door). She can also open rifts to other dimensions (with the aid of ritual magic) in case anyone ever needs to make a day trip to Hell. Group teleportation taxes her and reduces her scope in proportion to the size of the group. She could take the Avengers to the roof of a building, but not from New York to San Diego.
Transformation:
Zatanna's favorite trick is turning things into other things, e.g. a bad guy's gun into Lego. Handheld items like weapons, or worn items such as clothing, can be almost effortlessly transformed by her. Larger mass (or vast quantity) would require extreme concentration and possibly the invocation of additional spells to boost her power. Transforming living things is possible, but extremely unpredictable in its results, and so she avoids it as much as she can, except for healing. She can also transform things into simulacra of living things (e.g. turning a bazooka into a bunny rabbit), but these things are only simulacra: she cannot create sentient, let alone sapient, life.
Willpower:
Zatanna's control over her magic functions entirely on mental discipline. Failure to control the forces or beings she summons has disastrous consequences for everyone, and she has practiced techniques to focus her mind since childhood. Her magical lineage already has considerable instinctive control but her willpower operates on another level to successfully envision and execute a spell in the midst of battle while being threatened by a monstrously powerful opponent. Her willpower isn't just about closing out distractions, but persevering on when exhausted, badly hurt or afraid.

Celebrity:
Zatanna is a celebrity magician. She has charisma, wit, and glamour, and makes for a great talk show guest.
Driving:
Zatanna is a competent driver, including sports cars and sportbikes. With her quick reflexes and stunt training, she can escape from pursuing villains through crowded city streets on a rainy night with someone riding on the back.
Escapology:
Zatanna has learned her father's tricks in escape artistry and could slip out of bonds and traps, even without the aid of her magic.
Investigation:
Her father taught her to take note of the smallest details in her environment and correlate them back to stories and knowledge. Research and investigation are essential to a mage's training as reading grimoire, and she has a keen eye for details. Give her time and Zatanna can locate information or connect the dots. Games of perception served to focus her mind. Reading body language revealed hidden worlds. She can extract important information from a library and efficiently peruse grimoire for salient details. She recalls small facts with great clarity days or weeks later.
Languages:
Because she is so dependent on words for power, Zatanna has learned a variety of different languages. She is fluent in English and Italian, and is conversant in Spanish and Sign Language.
Legerdemain:
Legerdemain, sleight of hand, tricky fingers, the dramtic flourishes necessary to call attention to one place when the real game is in another. Call it what you will, it is the cornerstone and foundation skill of any capable stage illusionist. There are very few who could match Zatanna in the art of misdirection; despite her young age, it is rare to find someone who can best her when it comes to to cutting, shuffling, palming, switching, stealing and ditching and the only ones who do manage to catch her hand tricks tend to be master con artists themselves.
Occultism:
As a chronicler of magic she possesses an extensive understanding of occult lore due to her mystic background. Zatanna chronicles most of this information in the library at Shadowcrest, which already holds vast knowledge in it's library.
Prestidigitation:
Zatanna is a greatly skilled magician and an expert illusionist, therefore performing extraordinary (real)tricks and incredible illusions on stage is super simple to her. Though she does love to prove that she can do most of her stage tricks without the use of true magic, relying on her skills as an actress and trained performer to pull off many of her stunts.
Self-Defense:
Perhaps anticipating that his precocious daughter would eventually get into trouble that her magic wouldn't be able to get her out of, Giovanni insisted that Zatanna take martial arts as a child. She has studied them ever since and can hold her own in a fight. Since joining the Justice League, she's acquired the equivalent of a red belt in Martian martial arts to go with the brown she holds in aikido. She doesn't hold a candle against those who have dedicated their bodies and lives to self-defense, but she's more than capable of protecting herself in a fight against everyone else.

Connections:
As a member of the Justice League and renowned Master of the Mystic Arts, Zatanna gains a high degree of respect from fellow magic users. Name recognition can be useful to establish her credentials and open doors among a notably cagey, secretive lot. She can often find information or resources among the many mystics she knows, though rarely does this come for free.
Famous Lineage:
Not only is Zatanna the daughter of legendary magician and wizard, Giovanni Zatara, she is also a direct descendant of Leonardo Da Vinci and could trace her bloodline to famous occultist and adventurer Giuseppe Cagliostro, alchemists Nicholas Flamel and Evan Fulcanelli, notorious seer Nostradamus through her paternal side and going so far as to claim ancestry from King Arion of Atlantis. On her maternal side, she is the daughter of Sindella, one of the last in a rare race of mages called the Homo Magi (the Hidden Ones). Her potent magical ancestry comes with a great power and potential in wielding it and perhaps do even more.
Justice League:
Zatanna's longstanding open membership in the Justice League provides her with many benefits, including access to their assets, safe haven in the Hall of Justice, and close allies. They can count on her help, though she inherits their enemies.
Magic Wand:
Usually, Zatanna is often seen with a magic wand, although whether it is a stage prop or an actual focus for her power remains unknown. She does not need it though, considering her recent appearances without one and being able to cast spells effectively.
Sargon's Hat:
A top hat that once belonged to her father, Sargon's hat is a powerful artifact. She can project energies/things out from her hat or even take out any equipment she needs. The hat can also be used as a portal or a dungeon to capture and trap her target in it for as long as she wants. It is also unknown if its just a stage prop or a focus for her power. And just like her wand, she does not need it in order to use her magical powers.
Shadowcrest Mansion:
The ancestral home of the Zatara family. A mansion of vast mystical properties, it is not always situated in the same locale for extended periods of time. Mystical wards protect the mansion from unwanted trespassers, and other incantations are used to render it invisible to those untrained in the mystic arts. Recently, Shadowcrest has been appearing in the Gotham County region just outside Gotham City. While once the home of mage Giovanni Zatara, it has since been passed down to his daughter Zatanna. Zatanna maintains an extensive occult library inside the mansion and the house is staffed with faux servants created through magic. Another security feature at Shadowcrest is its voice recognition security system, a complex spell that serves as a "magic word" for gaining access to the front foyer.
Wealth:
Giovanni Zatara was first and foremost a magician, who enjoyed an illustrious career as a world-renowned illusionist. It isn't surprising that he has amassed the sort of fortune that only that sort of fame could provide, which he has used to maintain Shadowcrest and his daughter's lifestyle. Zatanna has carried this over into having amassed her own little fortune, from both her residency in Las Vegas, but also from her various videoes and vines she does. She loves her Tik Tok.
Weaknesses
Careful What You Wish:
Zatanna cannot grant a wish. If you ask her for money, she can give you a five out of her wallet, but if you want a million dollars, it has to come from somewhere . And much like wishing on a monkey's paw, it can come with unwanted consequences.
Fame:
Fame is a double-edged sword. While she courts the public eye, Zatanna has no double identity to fall behind like Mr. Wayne or Mr. Kent. Her persona online is followed by millions of people across multiple platforms, viral videos of her performances have 8-digit view counts, and she is always "on" as soon as she walks out the door. Despite having a secret place to hide, Zatanna knows all eyes are on her, and that can seriously hinder her actions and her personal safety. She doesn't have Kryptonian superpowers to back her up.
Finding Father:
Zatanna is desperate to find her father and will do almost anything to find and save him. She's willing to take risks and do things she'd normally not do in order to further her chance to locate her missing father.
Inherited Rogues:
The sins of the father have been passed onto her; in both his stage and heroic career, Giovanni has amassed almost as many enemies as friends. Powerful demons, sorcerors and even disgruntled puppeteers have wanted a piece of him forever, and they all know how much of a weak point Zatanna is to him.
Magic Overreliance:
Zatanna grew up with magic and has been around it her entire life. While she understands the risks and dangers, she also treats magic like it was a smartphone or an Alexa sometimes. This is a risky proposition, because any spell carries with it the risk of unforeseen consequences, especially spells cast carelessly or out of convenience.
Magical Paradox:
Her birthright as a Homo Magi grants her an enormous wellspring of magical energy apart from external sources and a deep resistance to magic because she *is* magic. Due to her bloodline, Zatanna must abide by a different set of eldritch rules. Her spells may act with lessened effect on magic-poor planes. Specific protections keyed against divine beings (e.g., Odin) also hinder her, possibly prohibiting her from touching an item or crossing a warded threshold. These leave her vulnerable in unique ways she isn't used to dealing with.
Mnemonic Devices:
Zatanna uses linguistic components as a mystical focus for her spellcasting. Words concentrate her intention with devastating effect. If she cannot produce or read a word, whether spoken or written, her spells operate off raw concentration or ritualized elements. The former has the hazard of running amok if she loses her focus due to injury or other conditions. Rituals require preparations and components, not much use in the middle of a battle. While she can still cast when totally silenced, she risks a great deal performing more than minor to moderate spells.
Willpower:
Zatanna's magic is only as strong as she is resolute in willing it into happening. If she's made to doubt herself or unable to concentrate, her effectiveness can be curtailed, sometimes severely.
