Sebastian Shaw is one of the most wealthy men in America, and known as both a tenacious corporate raider and a generous philanthropist. He is known to be a common fixture among the wealthy and powerful elite. Secretly, Sebastian is also the Black King of the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle, a cabal of powerful and wealthy individuals who have banded together with the goal of effectively conquering the world through their combined wealth and influence.

Timeline

Timeline:
* 1978 - Sebastian Shaw is born, the son and only child of Hiram Shaw.
* 1978-1983 - Hiram Shaw is a deeply abusive father, both physically and emotionally, literally beating into Sebastian a deep hatred of weakness and incompetence. He barely interacts with his son, sending him to exclusive private boarding schools (the only concession he makes towards advancing his Son's future).
* 1990 - Sebastian's mother takes her own life. This further aggravates the hateful relationship between Hiram and Sebastian. During yet another beating from his father, Sebastian's mutant powers manifest, though he doesn't fully understand what they do, only that the beatings don't hurt anymore.
* 1991-1995 - Sebastian grows to understand his power, but he keeps it secret from his father. He graduates at the top of his class from his elite private school.
* Late 1995 - Sebastian enters the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as an Engineering student. Hiram berates him for not pursuing an Ivy League school.
* 1996 - Shaw makes the acquaintance of Lex Luthor. The two become fast friends.
* 1999 - Shaw graduates from MIT with a double-major in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration. Leveraging connections he's made at school he gains the patronage of some of his classmates' parents and starts his own company, Shaw Engineering.
* 2001 - With Shaw Engineering growing rapidly both due to Shaw's own genius for business and a bit of help from his friend Lex Luthor, Shaw is inducted into the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club as the Black Rook. It's the first time his father ever says he's proud of him. A one-night stand with one of the Hellfire Club servers results in the birth of a son, Shinobi, but much like his father before him, Sebastian all but removes himself from the boy's life, providing for a reasonable quality of life and education, but little else.
* 2001-2008 - Shaw Engineering explodes into a multibillion dollar business thanks to gaining a large number of defense contracts in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the military actions that follow.
* 2009 - Hiram Shaw proposes that Sebastian merge Shaw Engineering with Shaw Industries, in exchange for Sebastian becoming the second-highest shareholder in his family's original corporation. Sebastian agrees.

Timeline2:
* Mid-2012 - Through a series of backroom deals, buyouts of minority shareholders, cajoling of board members, and most importantly Lex Luthor selling him just enough of the shares he owns in Shaw Industries, Sebastian gains the majority of stock in Shaw Industries, and ousts his father from his position as CEO and even his chairmanship of the Board of Directors. This family drama gets highly publicized in the business world, earning Sebastian a reputation as the most ruthless kind of businessman.
* Late-2012 - Through his position as Black King, Hiram Shaw tries to murder his son. Instead, Sebastian reveals his powers to him, and carries him to the top of the family's manhattan penthouse apartment and hurls him off of it. The police rule Hiram's death a suicide. Sebastian inherits his father's fortune and an overwhelming majority stake in Shaw Industries, and seizes the throne of the Black King of the Hellfire Club.
* 2013 - Sebastian Shaw convinces Lex Luthor to assume the position of White King of the Hellfire Club, and together they develop the beginnings of their plans for world domination.
* 2013-2019 - Shaw Industries grows in leaps and bounds, becoming one of the largest corporations in the world thanks to a long series of acquisitions, buyouts, and hostile takeovers.
* 2020 - With the retirement of Winston Frost from the position of White Rook, Sebastian and Lex conspire to place his daughter Emma in the vacant White Queen role.

Personality

Charismatic:
Sebastian is a deeply charismatic man, despite his ruthless and pragmatic nature. He tends to command respect and even loyalty, and people tend to pay attention to him. He tends to have a sense of what makes people tick and can adjust his own demeanor and words accordingly. Unless they've managed to earn his ire...people tend to like him.

Cunning:
Sebastian is a very clever and perceptive fellow, and while he's certainly a schemer he adjusts well to changing circumstances and excels at turning them to his advantage in some way. Likewise he is good at playing whatever role he needs to play to achieve his ends, whether it's the kindly mentor, the stern patriarch, the fearsome corporate raider, or even the outright tyrant. In any case, while Sebastian may not be the kind of genius that people like Lex Luthor or Reed Richards are, he is extremely wily and possibly even at his most dangerous when his back is against the wall.

Driven:
Say what you will of Sebastian Shaw, he works very hard to live up to his own standards. If he doesn't know something that he needs to, he'll take steps to learn it. If he wants something, he'll move heaven and earth to get it. He constantly pushes himself and the organizations he leads to become better, stronger, and more powerful than they are, and he encourages the same of those around him.

Elitist:
Sebastian believes that power belongs in the hands of those best suited to wield it. He has a high regard for confidence, competence, and ambition, and despises those he considers weak (which is pretty much anyone that is lacking in those areas). He does not care if you are mutant, metahuman, or human, though he does tend to prefer the former two with rare exceptions: He cares if you can do whatever is necessary to achieve the outcomes you desire. Those with the strength and cunning to make the world what they want to be are the ones that deserve it. Everyone else is just another moving piece in the great machine. Some might earn a bit of favor if they are competent and loyal, but there are leaders and followers, and Shaw very much views himself as a leader.

Patient:
Shaw is good at playing the long game. He can wait years for his plans to come to fruition, or to get back at someone with whom he's formed a grudge. He can spend years smiling to someone's face before savoring the moment of choking the life out of them (whether metaphorically or physically).

Pragmatic:
Shaw may be power-hungry and ambitious in the extreme, but he's no fool. He knows he can't conquer the world alone and that Chaos needs to be managed in limited doses to achieve maximum value from it. To that end he is loyal to his allies until such time as they betray him or they prove too weak to continue holding that role. With those who have earned his regard he is willing to grant second chances and even direct aid to help them recover from setbacks. But don't expect a third chance, and while in a rare few circumstances he might even feel bad about it, he will not sacrifice his ambition for anyone. Likewise while he can be very vindictive he very much understands that sometimes things don't go as planned and that most of the time in business "it's not personal."

Prideful:
Shaw has achieved a great deal in his life, and he is understandably proud of it. He has a huge ego and a tremendous degree of self confidence and willpower that stems from it. He might be called arrogant, but generally speaking his cunning and pragmatism temper that to the point that it doesn't always serve as a detriment. In fact one might argue that the confidence and willpower outweigh the negative aspects.

Ruthless:
Shaw has little in the way of morality preventing him from achieving his ends. He murdered his own father to get where he is today and sleeps like a baby (admittedly, Hiram was a monster, but still). He will lie, cheat, steal, and murder again if he thinks it is necessary, though he is careful in utilizing such tactics in manners where he is less likely to get caught. He's equally ruthless in the boardroom, and while it may be "just business" it would be a lie to say a large part of Sebastian didn't enjoy crushing his competition beneath his heel.

Vindictive:
Woe be unto anyone that wrongs or drastically fails Sebastian Shaw. He can hold a deeply hateful grudge for years, even decades, and you can be rest assured that at some point when the target of his ire is at their most vulnerable, he will strike hard and fast to destroy anything and everything they care about before finishing them off. Sebastian can be a loyal and generous ally, but he is a terrifying enemy for most.

That said, Shaw doesn't sweat the petty stuff, and understands when matters are beyond someone's control. He's not going to strangle Hellfire Pawns for not being able to overpower Superman or abandon a once-valuable ally for things that are truly just bad luck or unforeseen circumstances. Likewise petty insults and minor setbacks are not really enough to earn his wrath. You have to do some real damage to him or his business to get him to that level.

Character Sheet

Powers

Energy Absorption:
Sebastian Shaw's mutant ability is the power to absorb various forms of energy and transfer them into enhanced speed, strength, stamina and resistance to injury. However, Shaw absorbs different types of energy at different levels of efficiency. Kinetic energy is the most readily absorbed, making physical strikes a potent way of powering him up (and his preferred method). He has also shown the ability to absorb thermal energy (heat and fire blasts), electricity, and even magical energy, but these do not enhance his power as greatly as kinetic energy, and can be uncomfortable and painful for him to absorb. Shaw's energy absorption does have an upper limit, but as he has aged that limit has increased exponentially, and as it stands now he can withstand repeated strikes from "Class 100+" individuals.

As noted, Shaw's energy absorption directly fuels his physical capabilities. With sufficient energy stored up, Shaw can reach a degree of strength and invulnerability that can directly contend with some of the most physically powerful beings on Earth, well into the "Class 100" range and comparable with beings like the Hulk or perhaps even Superman. Likewise, his stamina is increased, allowing him to go without food, water, oxygen or sleep for extended periods of time, and even surviving in vacuum or ocean depths. Perhaps mercifully his speed and reflexes do not increase as drastically as his strength, but nevertheless it does increase, making him able to move and react with a speed that is well beyond the unaided or augmented levels of a normal human, to the point where he can strike faster than most opponents can react, and run at speeds up to about 150-200 miles per hour. At sufficient strength levels he can also make great leaps of up to a dozen or so miles (much like the Hulk).

Shaw's enhanced abilities do decline as he utilizes them, but usually at a much slower rate than he gains them. They also dissipate with time, over a period of about 8-12 hours depending on how much he has absorbed.

Skills

Business:
Shaw is a multi-billionaire CEO of a massive corporation, and despite being born to an "old money" family he is far more a "self-made man" than most of such circumstances (thanks largely to his father pushing him towards self sufficiency, in his own rather abusive way). In any case, Shaw is an expert at all the things needed to keep a multi-billion dollar business running smoothly and profitably. He's also a whiz at playing the markets to further grow his immense wealth. He is one of the most admired and respected (and feared) corporate leaders in America for a reason.

Education:
Sebastian has been educated at some of the nation's finest schools for most of his early life, and has a generally keen intellect with a great deal of varied knowledge on many subjects. If nothing else it helps keep him an excellent conversationalist with a wide array of professionals. He also generally has an excellent understanding of science and mathematics (going hand-in-hand with his background in Engineering), and can speak a handful of languages fluently.

Engineering:
Sebastian possesses a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. He's no super-genius like Tony Stark or even Norman Osborn but he's still well above-average in competence in his particular field. He can understand and utilize advanced technologies with relatively little difficulty even if he might not be as inventive as some others.

Manipulation:
If Shaw has top-level genius in one area, it's likely in his ability to get other people to do what he wants. Whether by intimidation, flattery, charm, cajoling, outright deception, or whatever other methods, Shaw has a true genius for pulling the strings on people around him, and through doing so, achieve his own desired ends. There's nothing supernatural or anything about it...he's simply a very charismatic and perceptive man who's usually quite good at reading people and acting accordingly.

Politicking:
Though Sebastian Shaw has never been a politician directly, he is intimately familiar with how the political world works, and in many ways is his corporation's best lobbyist as well as its owner and CEO. He definitely knows how to grease palms, glad-hand, feed egos, and otherwise get most politicians to do what he needs them to do and propose and promote legislation that serves his interests (and vote against those that do not). Most importantly, he knows how to figure out what people want, or even better need, and then provide the means for them to achieve it...for a price, of course, even if that price comes in "future favors." Shaw is also quite good at collecting "dirty laundry" on politicians and business rivals, and while he is certainly not above blackmail and extortion he is very judicious in utilizing such tactics, given how easily they might backfire.

Public Speaking:
Shaw is an eloquent and practiced public speaker. He is quite comfortable in front of a crowd and has just enough of a showman's flair to keep things engaging and even at times entertaining for an audience. Having a great deal of charisma of course helps, but Shaw has definitely put effort into learning to be a good speaker even beyond that.

Strategist:
Shaw is very much a "big picture" type of person. He can come up with pretty sweeping and detailed plans that unfold over extended periods of time, with lots of moving pieces. There are others likely better suited to tactical leadership in the moment, but when it comes to guiding virtually any kind of group in terms of overall direction and vision, Sebastian is an excellent leader.

Unarmed Combat:
Sebastian is a well above average fighter, primarily trained in boxing and grappling. Even without powers he could probably handle a small group of average street toughs, but while his pure skill may be not even close to martial arts masters, the enhanced strength, speed, and durability that his powers can provide make him capable of being a serious threat against nearly anyone.

Resources

Hellfire Club:
Sebastian Shaw owns the physical building that contains the New York City Hellfire Club which means that in the grand scheme of things he ultimately controls access to it. Beyond making him a good bit of profit, being one of the hottest clubs in the continental United States, it's elite clientele makes it a fantastic place for networking and catching up with the rich and powerful. While the Inner Circle may be an actual conspiracy to rule the world, the VIP room of the Hellfire Club is precisely the kind of place where the ever-present, passive conspiracy of the wealthy and powerful coming together to protect their own interests by shaping the future in innumerable ways is given form.

Inner Circle:
They're a pack of several of the most wealthy and powerful individuals in the world, all with one thing in common: They want it all. Technically, Shaw is the ultimate leader of the Inner Circle, but in practice the White King is equal in power, and the respective Queens aren't far behind. Still, while Shaw usually accepts that his desires are likely to be treated as "good suggestions" rather than orders, and knows that nearly every member of the Circle has their own agendas and plans that they have brewing independent of the Club and each other, it is Shaw and the White King that provide the strategic vision and overall guidance for their continuing efforts to consolidate absolute power. To that end, at least a bit of the power of the individual members of the Inner Circle is shared with Shaw to achieve these purposes (though the reverse is also true).

Network:
Shaw's wealth has allowed him to cultivate a network of "friends" and friendly acquaintances that stretches all throughout the United States and beyond. He regularly hobnobs with celebrities, politicians, and business magnates of various types, and a great many of them owe Shaw favors. He can place a call to any given state governor or national-level congressperson and expect them to clear their calendar for him. He has the personal phone numbers of Middle Eastern Princes and Russian Oligarchs and a vast array of other corporate CEOs. He could even reasonably expect to be patched through to the President himself on a phone call. Money opens all doors, and Sebastian Shaw has a great deal of it, and more importantly has known how to use it to grant himself a great deal of behind-the-scenes power and influence in the United States and beyond.

Pawns:
The entry point for the Inner Circle, the Pawns work across a wide array of fields. Some of them are staff and servers at the Hellfire Club itself, reporting back information they learn about their powerful and well-connected clientele to the higher levels of the Inner Circle. Some of them are effectively a private army for the Inner Circle, largely comprised of mercenary-minded military veterans, often with special operations experience (These men and women also serve as security at the Hellfire Club when "plainclothes"). The Pawns serve all of the Inner Circle members, but as Black King, the weight of Shaw's commands is only matched by the White King. In any case, Shaw effectively has a small army of people who are willing to do dirty work for him (and the rest of the Inner Circle) with a good deal of skill and a great deal of discretion. Serving as a Pawn is a potential pathway to immense power and wealth, and there is never a shortage of candidates eager for the opportunity.

Reputation:
Sebastian Shaw does not have a reputation as a "good guy" per se, largely because his company deals in things that are politically sensitive and unpopular in certain circles, and because a big part of his "legend" is that of being an audacious and tenacious corporate raider. That said, while the average Joe might not think terribly highly of him, the political and monied classes do tend to have great respect for him, and despite his reputation as a hardass he is usually ahead of the curve on things like improving workplace conditions and philanthropic causes, including environmental conservation. The people that work for him tend to be loyal as well, thanks to generous compensation and benefits and a usually-pleasant and paternal attitude. Though some do occasionally find out the hard way that he's not the most forgiving boss if you make a big mistake (though he IS very good at making sure it's the person who actually made the mistake that suffers, and not a scapegoat...in fact someone owning their mistake right out of the gate might be one of the few ways to even have a chance of saving their job). Regardless, Sebastian Shaw's name is one that commands attention and respect.

Shaw Industries:
Shaw Industries is a massive corporate conglomerate with many branches and subsidiaries, but it's primary interests are in the energy sector, with massive holdings in Oil, Natural Gas, and Alternative Energy (They divested themselves of Coal not long after Sebastian took over the company). They even have some involvement with maintaining and operating nuclear power plants. Beyond all that, Shaw Industries has departments that deal in heavy machinery (mining and construction equipment of various sorts), Construction (primarily overseas government/military facilities for the US) Logistics, (heavily linked to providing fuel to the US military on deployments) and even a smaller subsidiary that designs and builds more advanced technology, which while not even a patch on say, LexCorp's technological capability is still capable of producing some impressive tech, primarily under military and governmental contracts. In any case, Shaw Industries is a company that's known to virtually everyone, and while it's fossil fuel interests and place in the military-industrial complex do sometimes make it a target for political attacks and protests, very few have any illusions about "taking it down."

Wealth:
Sebastian Shaw is one of the world's wealthiest men, spoken of in the same breath as folks like Lex Luthor, Tony Stark, and Bruce Wayne. He is a multi-billionaire several times over. Suffice to say, if it is a good or service that can be bought with money, legally or illegally, Shaw can afford it. He lives in luxury undreamt of by most, and that's just the pocket change. He has multiple top-end residences around the world, multiple private jets, a superyacht, and is generally waited on hand and foot wherever he goes, unless he takes efforts not to be. He has major investments in a vast array of companies, a massive wardrobe of entirely handmade custom clothing, and all-in-all generally wants for nothing. Except more.

White King:
Sebastian Shaw has a tremendous ego, and a powerful competitive drive, and yet despite these things there is one other corporate luminary that he views as a peer and even perhaps the closest thing he has to a genuine friend: Alexander Luthor. Shaw and Luthor have known each other since their college days, when they were both studying together at MIT. Shaw recognized Lex's genius early, and worked to befriend the young man. While they have occasionally competed for smaller business interests as their respective corporations grew and prospered, for Sebastian's part at least, he views Lex as a kindred spirit, and recognizes that his technical genius outstrips his own by a wide margin. By the same token, Lex learned a fair bit of his own ability to schmooze politicians and grease the wheels of politics and industry from watching Sebastian at work. In the present they have partnered on multiple philanthropic initiatives and destroyed a multitude of potential competitors, rivals, and upstarts, often splitting up the assets left behind between their respective corporations. Trust is a difficult thing for anyone in the highest strata of wealth and power, but for Sebastian at least, Lex Luthor may have come the closest to earning it of anyone alive. In short, Sebastian is willing to stick his neck out a little further than he otherwise might where Lex is involved, and it usually seems the same holds true in reverse. They work dangerously well together.

Weaknesses

Ego:
Shaw has a tremendous ego, and while he is usually rational enough to make it at least somewhat difficult, picking at it is one way that he might be goaded into making an angry mistake. Even with a great deal of self-control his emotional armor does have a weak point, and belittling him, and the things he's built, or otherwise forcing him to suffer humiliation can, quite possibly, drive him nearly mad with rage and desire for retribution. It may take more than a little jab here and there...or not. The man is absolutely capable of nursing a grudge for a long time, even for relatively petty reasons.

Extreme Temperatures:
Extremes of ambient temperature (heat and particularly cold) produce an abnormally high drain on Shaw's power reserves. While his invulnerability might let him survive such things for a short while (if it's high enough by that point) he is often best served to remove himself from such an environment or phenomenon quickly, as he can lose his "charge" in minutes or even seconds (depending on how much he's absorbed and how extreme the temperature) rather than hours.

Hard To Be the King:
Being the Black King of the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle gives Sebastian a tremendous degree of power and influence, and more important access to some of the other most powerful, wealthy, and influential individuals in the world. But there are plenty of people out there that would love nothing more than to claim that position for themselves, most certainly including among the elite ranks of the Inner Circle. He cannot show weakness, and he must be ever-vigilant, because the knife in the back is coming, whether figurative or literal, and he must be ready for it at all times.

Immobilization:
One of the most effective ways to deal with Shaw and his powers is to immobilize him before his strength levels get too high (and then leave him alone). In such a state it is difficult if not impossible for him to increase his power levels. Often an indirect approach works best when trying to deal with Shaw as a physical threat.

Overload:
While the limit of Shaw's energy absorption abilities is enormously high...it does have a limit. If Shaw reaches it, he doesn't explode or anything of the sort, but he is rendered unconscious until his power levels dissipate (About 12 hours, perhaps a bit longer since he's been "maxed out"). Still, he could probably take two or three full or near-full power punches from a Kryptonian-level opponent before the max is reached (or a greater number of less-powerful ones, of course).

Psionics:
Sebastian Shaw has a strong will, which does lend him some resistance to mental intrusion and manipulation, but it is still often far easier to attack Shaw through his mind rather than through physical conflict. Sufficiently powerful or skilled telepaths can simply bypass both his mental and physical defenses
