Profile
Roberto da Costa, Robbie or Berto to his friends, is best known as the son and heir of Brazillian billoniare Emmanuel da Costa, currently living in the states while attending an elite private school. He does the rounds of society things, and gets himself on page six from time to time. Just another New York rich kid.
In reality Roberto is a mutant and a member of the New Mutants with the alias Sunspot, he hasn't gotten up to much in public so right now people are more likely to go 'who?' than 'wow!' when introduced to the solar powered mutant.

Ahem. While that's shockingly accurate let's break things down.
2001 - Born in Rio de Janeiro to billionaire Emmanuel da Costa and his American archaeologist wife Nina. Roberto's early years are a life of luxury and soccer, though there is a bit of darkness to go with the light when he realizes his father is involved with some very shady dealings on the side.
2015 - Roberto gets into a fight with other players during a city wide soccer tournament where his powers manifest sending the other boys flying. The incident draws the attention of Professor Xavier as well as Roberto's father's enemy Donald Pierce. Pierce kidnaps Roberto's girlfriend (as much of a girlfriend as a 14 year old has anyhow) to force him to surrender to him. Xavier and the new mutants intervene but Roberto's girlfriend Juliana is killed in the fighting. After some grieving, Roberto agrees to join Xavier and begins training as a New Mutant.
2015 - 2019 - Roberto gets into adventures with the New Mutants while getting an education at Xavier's while his grief over Juliana has him be hot headed at first he becomes more patient and prone to strategizing as time goes on.
2018 - The New Mutants join his Mother, Nina, on an expedition to a lost Roman outpost in mineral-rich Maderia in the Amazon rainforest. This threatens plans by Roberto's father, Justin Hammer and the Shadow board to plunder these resources. A mole in the expedition fails to kill the group, and they end up Nova Roma. The mole, Castro, partners with Senator Domitius Gallio of the Imperial faction. The New Mutants meet Amara, who is revealed as a mutant and joins them. Together they thwart Marcus' plans and Amara's Dad and the senate keep power.
2019 - Roberto starts lessons with his father's friend Gideon and discovers a plot by Gideon to assassinate Roberto's father, Roberto takes the bullet meant for his father and saves his life though Roberto spends the next few months in the hospital and the takes the rest of the year to fully recover.
2019 - Roberto appeared on the cover of Teen Vogue and had a feature article discussing Football, racism, the death of his girlfriend and being a mutant.
2020 - Returns to Xaviers and is on the road to graduation!

Personality
Budding Strategist:
Hey who knew if you stopped a moment and thought about things you can usually figure out a better way to do something than if you rush in. Roberto has a talent for that kind of thinking, but right now he's struggling against his hotheaded impulses in order to use them.
Hotheaded:
Roberto has a short fuse when it comes to insults, take a serious shot at him or his friends is a good way to get punched.
Loyal:
This maaay not apply to dating but when it comes to friends and family, it applies 100. Once you're Berto's friend he's got your back for life, and it goes the same for blood, I mean he hates what his father does, but if someone messes with him Berto would be there in a flash.
No Filter:
Roberto has a direct line from his brain to his mouth and so he often says a lot of things without considering their impact, then, when he's called on it get's his back up and stubbornly refuses to apologize. At least until he's had some time to think. It's a constant cycle with him and one he's trying (unsuccessfully) to break.
Passion For Life:
Life is fricking awesome and Roberto wants to enjoy all of it. He works hard he plays hard and he does his best to enjoy all of it (though it's /way/ easier with the play side of things). This passion for life also gives him an almost unshakeable optimism, allowing him to find the silver lining on even the darkest cloud.
Responsibility:
Roberto grew up knowing that the gifts he was born with (both financial and genetic) came with certain responsibilities. In the case of his wealth it means learning to be a businessman even if that's not what he really wants to do with his life. In the case of his powers it means using them for good. This quality keeps his anger and hedonistic impulses in check and makes him choose to be a hero when he could just skate on through life without a care in the world.

Powers
Solar Absorption:
Roberto's cells absorb and store solar energy in the same way they store caloric energy from food. This allows Roberto to not only operate without food so long as he has sufficient stored solar energy, but also to use that energy in accelerated bursts granting superhuman power. When he uses these powers his works to absorb as much light as possible making it seem pitch black as no light is reflected from its surface. Using absorbed solar energy Roberto is able to demonstrate the following powers:
Flight: Roberto is able to fly through generating and manipulating the heat around him. He is able to manage stationary hovering as well as reaching speeds of 150mp without over exerting himself
Enhanced Strength: Roberto is able to lift 25 tons while empowered. He can use a fraction of that power while in his human form and is able to lift a ton with concentration.
Durability: While empowered or using his enhanced strength his body is durable enough to support the weight without injury and before Gideon's experiments that was the end of it. Now though Berto can take hits from some of the big boys like Smasher or a bomb at point blank range while empowered and live to dust himself off afterwards. Still hurts like hell though so he may not be dead, he is certainly not at his best after taking that scale of damage.
Thermokinesis: Roberto can manipulate heat and is able to raise and lower the local temperature by emitting or absorbing heat into his body. He is able to do the same with people's body heat and is able to cause intense discomfort and injury as a result.
Limited Photokinesis: Roberto can emit light at various levels of intensity as well as absorb light from the surrounding environment to darken his immediate area.
Dark Solar Plasma Blasts: Another 'gift' from Gideon Roberto is able to fire concussive plasma blasts from his hands at varying levels of intensity. At their strongest level they can hit with the force of 20 tons.
Fire and Heat Immunity: Roberto is immune to all forms of heat and fire as his mutant metabolism simply converts it to energy like it does with solar radiation. This includes heat attacks, fire and heat from the environment.
Skills
Academics:
Not that he?d let you know, but Roberto does actually try hard at school. He has to, he?s going to run da Costa international one day. He is a solid student at his grade level and takes special classes in business after school. Also thanks to listening to his mother, he is fairly well versed in the latest happenings in archaeology. He actually likes history and museums, and occasionally likes to pull out historical tidbits to shock his professors from time to time.
Driving:
Not only is Roberto a licensed driver, but thanks to learning at Xavier?s Institute knows a few advanced defensive driving tricks as well. He?s still practicing, but he?s more than decent behind the wheel.
Football (Aka Soccer):
Roberto is a skilled soccer player, and if he kept working at it and didn?t have a million other responsibilities he could probably go pro one day. That said, he /does/ have those responsibilities, so he has to settle for being the best player at Xaviers. So sad.
Hand To Hand Comabt:
As a New Mutant, Roberto has had some training in hand to hand combat from some spectacular teachers. Though not a match for some of the more talented and highly trained students, he can hold his own with most human combatants pretty easily and with his powers engaged take on superpowered opponents.
Linguistics:
Growing up in Brazil and visting America often, Roberto speaks fluent Portugese and English. Also, like many Brazillians who travel he's a fluent Spanish speaker.
Pilot:
Sure, Roberto can fly under his own power, but flying the Blackbird is cool! Since joining the New Mutants, Roberto has taken flying lessons from the staff at Xavier?s and while he?s not about to be winning any Top Gun trophies he can fly the Blackbird and other airplanes without crashing them... most of the time.
Pop Culture:
Roberto is a big fan of music and old movies (y?know, like from back in the 80s) and quotes from both incessantly. This skill is more amusing to him than useful except on trivia night around the mansion.
Stategic Thinking:
You wouldn't know it from when Roberto first joined the team but he's got a brilliant strategic mind when he cares to use it, like one of those kids who you teach to play chess and three games later kind of brilliant, but while the resources are there, he's still learning to think first before he acts, but when he does he can pull off some truly magnificent schemes against some of the cleverest opponents.

Dacosta International:
When Roberto's father was stricken with a severe neurological disorder and placed in a medically induced coma Roberto stepped into his shoes. This included defeating a claim by Mephisto on his Father's soul, routing an effort by the Shadow cabinet to take over his company and identifying Trask international's most recent plans to implement Sentinel's in third world countries. He has weathered these more or less intact and has continued to expand his companies positions readying them for the next stage in trade as the space lanes open to human ingenuity and commerce. Roberto is currently the CEO Da Costa International.
Gotham University:
Berto's mom Nina is a professor of Archaeology at Gotham University and has been for quite sometime. She is also one of the pre-eminent scholars in this field, especially in the areas of Meso-American culture and late Roman culture. This means that Roberto has connections at Gotham University, and in the Archaeology scene in general. It also means the possibility for cool field trips and quirky adventures. Jinkies, Gang!
Intergalactic Trade:
Roberto has had the foresight to open DaCosta's Restaurant and Emporium at the space port. The locale is a hub for tourists and locals and has enabled Roberto to make contacts along the trade routes that include Earth. This has lead to a fledgling intergalactic trading business including supplying refugees supplies and medical aid for those displaced by the Shi'ar civil war. Lacking spacecraft of his own, Roberto serves as middle man, using independent ships to ferry goods. He is hoping to acquire a yacht/cruiser but this has proven problematic.
New Mutant:
Roberto is a member of the New Mutants and has access to all the things that come with that status, a custom made uniform able to protect him from small arms fire and adapt to his mutation through the wonders of unstable molecules, comms devices, access to the Danger Room and flight training on the Blackbird. Though the best benefits of being a New Mutant is the level of swag it gives Roberto around campus and the good friends who he can count on to have his back.
Vehicle:
Roberto's family has been leasing him expensive wheels since he turned 16. His current ride is a 2020 Maserati GranTurismo. He made the sacrafice of getting a four seater instead of something cooler and two seater so he could give his less affluent friends a ride from time to time. The sacrifice is real, man.
Vehicles:
As the CEO of DaCosta International Roberto has access to the companies fleet of vehicles. This includes, SUVs, limousines, town cars and myriad others from hot rods to dune buggies. There are even a few tactical ground vehicles (read APCs, less than five) and a small fleet of aircraft including a pair of high end SSTs.
Xavier's Institute:
Roberto is an alumni in good standing at Xavier's Institute. He can call upon the school in times of need, access their resources but it is also a responsibility. While Xavier funds that day to day operations special projects and certain upgrades fall to the alumni organization.
Weaknesses
Hotheaded:
Is sort of a punch first ask questions later kind of guy. He's not really angry per se, but he likes to jump in with both feet (or fists) in a given situation, which makes him reckless. Also, he doesn't take insults that well and isn't afraid to throw a punch to prove a point.
He's working on it, but there's still a lot of work to go.
Only-Humanish:
Sure Roberto is a mutant with really awesome powers, but he's also just as squishy as a regular human when his powers aren't on and he still needs air and water to live, the only thing he really doesn't need that people do is food, but he likes eating anyhow because have you tried food?
Solar Dependence:
Roberto's powers are solar bases and without a source of direct sunlight frequent use of those powers can run through his reserves quickly. It is believed that he will someday be able to absorb indirect light like that reflected from the moon, but that day is not today, and this limitation is very real.
