Profile
Rocketed away from a dying world at the age of sixteen, Kara Zor-El was placed in stasis aboard a life pod of her father's design - orbiting Earth's yellow sun for decades. When she finally landed on Earth, she found that her cousin had grown to become its greatest superhero and died in its defense. Seeking out a way to live up to the legacy her cousin Kal-El left behind, Kara became Supergirl while trying to balance and ordinary life as freshman college student Kara Danvers.
Timeline
Timeline:
"This vessel carries my daughter, Kara Zor-El from the now dead planet Krypton. Treat her as you would your own child for you will see the treasure she will be for your world."
- Superman/Batman (2003) #9
1969 - Kara Zor-El is born to Zor-El and Alura In-Ze in Argo City on the planet Krypton.
1985 - Kara's uncle, Jor-El, proves that Krypton is doomed to a cataclysm that will destroy the planet. Her father uses his own research to create a spacecraft, putting Kara in stasis and sending her to Earth ahead of her infant cousin Kal-El.
1985 - 2018 - Kara's rocket was programmed to orbit Earth's sun and to leave Kara in stasis, allowing her to absorb yellow solar radiation.
2018 - Considering Kara to be sufficiently empowered, her pod makes a water landing in Gotham Harbor. She learns that her cousin had been on Earth for decades. Batman took her to the Fortress of Solitude where she found her cousin in serious condition.
2019 - Kara spends several months in her cousin's tutelage, learning about Earth and residing mostly alone at the Fortress of Solitude. She is also contacted by the Department of Extranormal Affairs, who recruit her as an agent and set her up with adoptive parents - Agents Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers.
Late 2019 - Kara debuts as Supergirl! Filling the void left by her cousin but also acting as an agent of the D.E.O.

Personality
Hopeful:
"The kamnium in the lake petrified these animals ages ago. They're not going anywhere."
"Exactly ... they're stuck here. But if I holo-photo them all, then a little piece of them can escape with me. It's pretty strange, I know. Everyone else thought so."
"That's because no one else would ever see it that way, Kara. I would never say that's strange. That's hope. That's what the crest we wear stands for."
- Supergirl (2016) #1
Superman is a symbol of hope to the world. Supergirl eagerly follows his example, and lives to embody it. She is not satisfied to simply be there to save others when they need help, she strives to help others do better. She believes that even in the darkest times, there is always a little ray of hope to be found. Though she may feel battered and defeated, Kara never truly gives in because in her heart of hearts she has faith that things can and will improve.
Moral:
"You just murdered a man. So you are most definitely not on my side."
- Supergirl (2016) #34
Kara's moral code dictates that just because she is capable of widespread destruction and even conquest, that does not make it the right thing to do. She gets no real joy from hurting others, and would not use her abilities to kill. She will go to any lengths to avoid killing even the most dangerous and powerful of her enemies, preferring to see them face justice or even reform if possible. This is not to say she cannot be pushed to committing the ultimate act of violence, but it would take a great deal to get her there.
Persistent:
"Father. Father always .. always says ... get knocked down ... get right back ... up!"
- Supergirl (2016) #1
Kara does not take to defeat easily. She does not give in nor surrender, preferring to push on regardless of the obstacles in her way. This is the sort of tenacity that allows her to overcome even the greatest of odds, forcing herself to dig deeper and come up with a way to succeed even when victory seems hopeless. Kara is the sort who will fight to the very end for those she has promised to protect, and she will gladly throw herself against insurmountable odds if it means a chance at saving those in peril.
Survivor's Guilt:
"Argo City is gone. My mother and father are dead. Chase is right. I have not had twenty years to deal with it like Kal."
- Supergirl (2016) #1
Unlike her cousin, Kara remembers Krypton. She had friends and relatives there, and lived amongst them well into her teenage years. She was alive during the planet's last days, and witnessed the tensions and terror as her people approached their eventual extinction. However, unlike them, she survived. She feels the guilty weight of this, feeling that there are others more deserving. She strives to live up to the sacrifices her parents made so that she might live, but in her mind Krypton was destroyed very recently and the wounds are still very fresh.
Time Displaced:
"I built it. The architecture's based on Kryptonian geometry. My home is always open to you."
"Amazing. I used to bounce you on my knee. You know that, right?"
- Supergirl (2016) #1
Kara has the odd distinction of being physically (and mentally) younger than her cousin Kal-El while being chronologically older than him. She was placed in suspended animation when she was sent to Earth, and remained that way for over thirty years while her cousin grew up and matured on Earth. It is difficult for Kara to look at the man he is become and reconcile that with the baby she knew him as. It's a form of very specific culture shock that can make it difficult to follow his example at times, or accept that he knows best.
Character Sheet
Powers
Enhanced Vision:
" ... what ... I can ... I can see my bones ... !"
"It is x-ray vision. Just one of many changes to Kryptonian physiology caused by exposure to this planet's yellow sun."
- Supergirl (2011) #2
Supergirl's Kryptonian eyes are capable of seeing every part of the electromagnetic spectrum, able to see not only visible light but radiation, microwaves, and radio waves. She is capable of focusing her vision to a degree that she can ignore other frequencies in favor of a particular one or set, so she is still able to perceive color in the way most human beings do. On top of this incredible range of vision, Kara is also capable of a wide variety of other visual feats.
For one, she is capable of telescoping vision. By focusing, she can see almost as far as the laws of physics will allow. Not only can she see detail across vast distances, but she is capable of viewing matter down to the atomic level with only the naked eye. This enables her to see things like micro fractures in otherwise highly durable materials, making it easier to damage them by striking the right points.
For another, she is capable of what her cousin calls 'x-ray vision' which allows her to peel away layers of substance. She can see through walls, layers of materials, and even all the way down to the skeleton. The only restriction to this are ultra-dense substances, most typically lead.
Flight:
"I can fly, Eliza. Why do I have to learn how to drive?"
- Supergirl (2016) #1
If super strength is the signature ability of the Super Family, flight is a close and highly competitive second. When empowered by a yellow sun, Supergirl can take flight and slip the bonds of gravity. She is able to fly fast enough to escape the atmosphere and orbit, and even travel interplanetary distances - though her need to breathe makes journeys between the stars unfeasible without some form of transportation. She flies well beyond the speed of sound, enabling her to reach any place on the globe in a matter of minutes or even seconds if she pushes herself. Jaunts to even the furthest reaches of the solar system are possible within the space of a few hours, and her incredible mental agility even at great speeds allows her to make hairpin turns without slowing down.
Hearing:
"You - you're here. I just - I mean, how'd you find me?"
"I have good ears. You okay? Your heart is racing. I can hear that, too."
- Supergirl (2016) #5
Supergirl possesses an incredibly enhanced sense of hearing, able to hear even the quietest of sounds or those in frequencies beyond human perception. She can hear a whispered conversation from miles away, and has an innate ability to tell truth from lies by listening to the heartbeats of those with whom she is speaking. Generally she is concentrating in such a way as to block out the ambient noise around her as being able to hear what is happening for hundreds of miles in every direction can be distracting at best and debilitating at worst. If she concentrates she can focus on individual sources, enabling her to listen for sounds very far away without them being drowned out. Her sense of hearing is still subject to the laws of physics, however, and there must be air for the sound to travel through in order for it to reach her - words spoken in places such as a vacuum-sealed chamber would not reach her.
Heat Vision:
"Listen, I already went through getting my face french fried by heat vision with Power Girl. I'm sure not going to take it from you."
- Supergirl (2005) #2
A token ability of earthbound Kryptonians, Kara is able to emit beams of intense heat from her eyes. She has learned to focus these to varying degrees of intensity, allowing her to do everything from sever bonds at a microscopic level to melting tempered steel with a glance. When enranged or suffering from an overabundance of solar energy, this is often the first power to go haywire and Kara is not beyond firing off bursts of heat vision without meaning to do so.
Invulnerability:
"So you do the whole bullets bounce off thing too."
"It tickles."
- Supergirl (2005) #0
Supergirl enjoys an incredible degree of invulnerability that allows her to survive some of the most destructive forces in the universe. In ordinary terms, bullets simply bounce off her to the point that she can barely feel them. She can walk through those most inhospitable environments both on Earth and beyond without feeling much more than very mild discomfort. She can bathe in molten rock without being burnt. Even incredibly powerful explosives would not cause her any form of permanent injury, although they may send her reeling. This invulnerability extends like a skin tight aura from her skin, protecting her clothing to a degree as well. Her invulnerability also allows her to withstand most poisons and toxins, including earthborne diseases. While she needs to breath, she's able to hold her breath for several hours and can survive in the vacuum of space.
Solar Battery:
"Wasn't sure this would work - that the sun would revive me like a shot of adrenaline to the heart. But this seemingly insignificant yellow star has been the wellspring of my power ever since father sent me here. And I have never drank so deep from that wellspring. Never felt so strong!"
- Supergirl (2005) #2
All of Supergirl's powers derive from yellow solar radiation absorbed into her cells by her unique Kryptonian physiology. The yellow sun is the source of her powers, and the more radiation she absorbs the stronger she becomes. Kara herself has the potential to be the most powerful Kryptonian in existence given that she was never raised to restrain herself and is genetically predisposed to observe more solar radiation than her cousin. Even when on the very precipice of death, Supergirl is able to recover almost instantly with exposure to sunlight - a trip into outer space where the radiation can hit her unfiltered by the atmosphere is enough to bring her back from even the most fatal trauma. Additionally, solar energy keeps her in a rejuvenated state that will allow her to live many years more than a normal human being might.
Speed:
"You will need to input some Kryptonian code into your server - only a few quintillion lines."
"A few quintillion? I'd die of old age just transcribing - "
WHHOOOOOSSSSHHHH
"There it is. You blinked. Now here is the plan ... "
- Supergirl (2016) #5
Like her more famous cousin, Supergirl is faster than a speeding bullet. Much, much, much faster. In terms of raw speed, she is capable of pushing even dedicated speedsters. Though she could not likely match them for pace and endurance, she's certainly capable of making them work hard to outclass her. In combat she is able to use her speed to act reflexively, throwing and dodging punches faster than the human eye can see.
Not only is she capable of moving at incredible speeds, but she is able to think and react at the same pace. It is not only a matter of being able to move fast from place to place, but she can also read books in a fraction of a second or change her clothes faster than the human brain can comprehend. The only real limitations of her speed in any practical sense are the limitations of her environment - if she reads a book too fast it would simply come apart in her hands, if she moves too swiftly through the air she risks shredding surrounding buildings in her wake.
Strength:
"Number two just checked in. After being punched to Mongolia. What the hell happened?"
- Supergirl (2011) #2
Perhaps the signature ability of all earthbound Kryptonians, Supergirl possesses incredible strength that belies her small stature. Put simply, Kara is one of the strongest beings on the planet. She can lift hundreds of tons in one hand as though it weighed almost nothing. She is capable of shredding through nigh-indestructible materials and throwing even heavy objects like tanks into space. Simply put, there is very little she cannot achieve with her phenomenal strength and she can really only be countered by other super-strong beings.
It is worth noting that Kara's strength is not so much physical strength in the same way it applies for human beings, but rather manipulation of energy fields. This is how she can is able to achieve feats such as lifting a building without it crumbling under its own weight. Even without this ability to manipulate fields she possesses a greater degree of strength than the average human, though not nearly as fantastical as it is when fully empowered by a yellow sun.
Super Breath:
"'Big Bad Wolf'?"
"You read my mind."
- Supergirl (2016) #32
Thanks to the incredible strength and durability granted Kara by her Kryptonian physiology, she is able to expel incredibly strong gusts of air from her lungs. She is able to create hurricane-force winds in this way, enough to extinguish fires, create vortices, or even blow heavy objects completely away. She is also able to use fine control of her musculature to make the air molecules expand away rapidly, thus allowing her to freeze the air around her. This is enough to freeze water and even other objects solid in a matter of seconds.
Skills
Actor:
"'Kara Danvers' is a tool for you to walk amongst the people you protect."
- Supergirl: Rebirth (2016) #1
Supergirl is a very well-known face, and wearing the S-shield that she does loops her in with perhaps the most famous and widely-known superhero to ever exist. That said, she needs to lead a normal life some of the time and just putting on a pair of glasses doesn't really make her unrecognizable. Instead, she's learned to completely change her body language and way of speaking. As Kara Danvers, she is a mousey and timid young woman mostly given over to intellectual pursuits such as STEM subjects and journalism. She has become so good at adopting this disguise that few people would liken her to Supergirl, despite their physical similarities.
Artist:
"You want me to 'paint wind'? With this? ... Seriously, is this a real class? My taxes pay for this, you know."
- Supergirl (2005) #10
Kara has discovered a love for art - everything from sketching to painting to music to fashion design. These are aspects of culture on Krypton that were long ago homogenized and she has become quite enamored with Earth's much more vibrant and free art scene. She frequently redesigns her costume, her apartment often scattered with design artwork for different versions. She also owns a guitar, which she enjoys playing but is still learning.
Chef:
"Slow down, Kara - we can barely see you. My garlic press is levitating. I'm not comfortable with that."
"Well, you may not have tri-snouts on Earth, Eliza. Or extrasensory spices ... but there! I adapted a Kryptonian recipe, Jeremiah - Kvornish Pork!"
- Supergirl (2016) #6
Kara has developed a fondness for food. While her taste buds are still adjusting to the strange (and primitive) flavors of Earth cuisine, she quickly found a love for chocolate and other sugary treats. Beyond simply buying them at the store, she's made a point of learning how to prepare meals which can usually be handled in the blink of an eye with judicious use of her powers. As well as learning how to make different meals from different regions of Earth, Kara has even taken to adapting Kryptonian meals using ingredients available on Earth with mixed results.
Combatant:
"I know first level Klurkor. Just because I can't use heat vision doesn't mean I'm helpless."
- Supergirl (2005) #40
Under the tutelage of her mother, Kara learned several Kryptonian martial arts - most notably Torquasm Ro, Torquasm Vao, and Klurkor. These martial arts not only trained her body to fight even in the absence of her powers, but also trained her mind to achieve higher levels of efficiency and concentration by entering a more malleable mental state. Though she's far from a learned grandmaster of these techniques, she knows them well enough to employ them effectively in combat. Even without the use of her Kryptonian powers, Kara is a capable opponent for even well-trained fighters.
Kryptonian Culturist:
"There's a story in the Kryptoniad. During the Wars of Ice and Fire. The goddess Cythonna gave Jor-Ne, Drom of the mythic Zal City, an impossible choice - kill his son and spare his city, or save him and let the city burn. Jor-Ne chose his people. He sacrificed his son. His family line. And so Zal City prospered."
- Supergirl (2016) #6
Kara was born and raised on Krypton. A resident of Argo City, the culture of her people was deeply ingrained in her at a young age. In her youth she learned the myths and legends of the ancient past, she learned to prepare Kryptonian food, and she learned the complex social interplay that had comprised Kryptonian society since time immemorial. Her understanding does not come from a book and she may well be the last remaining Kryptonian in the universe who was actually born to that culture rather than adopting it in later life. Though it means relatively little now that there are so few other Kryptonians left, it does allow her to understand the mysteries they left behind on a natural and intuitive level.
Linguist:
"Just as I start to understand English, there are hundreds of other languages to learn."
- Supergirl (2016) #1
Kara is a native speaker of Kryptonese, fluent in both the spoken and written versions of the language. When she arrived on Earth, she began to learn English and has become proficient enough that she can engage in high level, technical conversation without much problem. She's also branched out to learn other Earth languages, studying dozens of them thanks to her Kryptonian intellect. She's only been studying Earth languages for around a year, and most of what she does speak she speaks badly but she's generally could enough to hold a halting conversation with almost anyone.
Scientist:
"Did you see her illium-349 presentation? There's no way the Council won't accept Kara into the Science Guild."
- Supergirl (2016) #1
On her native Krypton, Kara Zor-El was a scientific prodigy. Her level of innate talent was such that even as a teenager she seemed destined to be accepted into her world's most august scientific body. She has a detailed understanding of many academic fields up to a Kryptonian standard, which in many ways far surpasses even the most cutting understanding of these disciplines on Earth. She has knowledge enough to construct Kryptonian technology if given the appropriate resources, and can even cobble together passable facsimiles using more plentiful materials available on Earth. For Kara, when comparing her to other scientists on Earth it could be likened to a modern day polymath going back in time to the Dark Ages of Europe.
Resources
Costume:
"Sir, we are already gigapascals past the ultimate tensile strength of any material known to science."
"C'mon, just say it, Miss Thorn ... it's indestructible! It's not clothing, it's armor!"
- Supergirl (2011) #4
Supergirl was sent to Earth with a costume made for her by her father: the uniform of the Kryptonian Science Guild, bearing the Crest of El on the chest. Made using Kryptonian methods, the suit itself is incredibly durable and is able to withstand incredible amounts of punishment without taking damage. It does not function in a way that truly protects Kara from injury, but it does not suffer from wear and tear in the same way normal textiles might. Since arriving on Earth, Kara has learned to recreate the processes used to create this Kryptonian material and frequently designs and redesigns new versions of her costume to suit her mood.
Fortress of Solitude:
"- Here at Kal's Fortress - or what's left of it - it's the last place that feels like home."
- Supergirl (2016) #21
Though the Fortress of Solitude does not belong to Kara, she enjoys full access to it as Superman's cousin and a fellow Kryptonian. The Fortress itself is expansive, containing a wide variety of extraterrestrial technology including advanced machinery and robotics from Krypton. There's also a zoo with rare and even extinct creatures from all throughout the universe, brought there for safe keeping. While it functions as a superlative laboratory and base of operations when Kara needs it, the Fortress is also great for quiet reflection and allowing her to keep in touch with her Kryptonian heritage.
Kal-El:
"I'd forgotten what this was like, fighting beside Kal. The unspoken communication. The trust. The House of El."
- Supergirl (2016) #31
When Kara arrived on Earth, she discovered that not only had her baby cousin grown up and matured but that he had become the greatest superhero in the world. She also discovered that he had died, slain by Doomsday years before her arrival. Although he did die, she learned that he returned but chose to live as Clark Kent and let the world believe Superman had indeed perished. Kara looks to her cousin for guidance in understanding Earth culture, her powers, and her place in the world. Kal-El, in turn, has a deep and abiding affection for Kara as his last living blood relative. She could rely on him for help if she needed it, and enjoys a status akin to a family member with him and his adoptive parents, the Kents.
The Agents Danvers:
"We're your parents, Kara. We're not dead. Did Superman gripe this much?"
"Probably. And his Earth parents were not assigned to him."
- Supergirl: Rebirth (2016) #1
The Department of Extranormal Operations has kept tabs on Kara ever since she arrived on Earth, and have even gone so far as to forge for her the civilian identity of Kara Danvers - the daughter of Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers. These two D.E.O. agents are married and genuinely care about Kara, even having gone so far as to learn Kryptonese in an effort to better communicate with her. Their relationship can be rocky at times, but Kara is slowly coming to view them as surrogate parents and relies on them heavily to help her better understand Earth culture in the absence of her cousin.
Weaknesses
Alien:
"It is still strange for me. Krypton adopted a unified global cuisine centuries ago. What are you hiding in this thing, Eliza? Clear pasta? This truly is an alien world."
- Supergirl (2016) #1
Kara is a relatively recent emigrant to Earth. While she has made great strides in learning the language(s) and cultural idiosyncrasies, she is still fundamentally alien. When she speaks, it is with a Kryptonian accent that sounds uniquely foreign no matter where in the world she might find herself. When she's frustrated, her accent can become so thick that it is difficult to understand her. She puzzles over simple things like regional delicacies and pop culture, while many forms of slang and common sayings go right over her head. Beyond this, her physiology is Kryptonian and as such most medical practitioners lack the knowledge and understanding to treat her should she get sick and genetic testing will easily reveal her extraterrestrial origins.
Beholden:
"You help the D.E.O. do our job - monitor extra-normal threats, protect the Earth. And we oversee your activity as Supergirl."
- Supergirl: Rebirth (2016) #1
When Kara arrived on Earth, she found herself without the immediate guiding influence of her cousin who was living a civilian life and could not actively teach her how to be a superhero. Kara ended up with the Department of Extranormal Operations, a branch of the United States federal government that dealt with superhumans and the problems they create. Kara's adoptive parents are DEO agents, and Kara herself is overseen by them - often dispatched by them to deal with various crises when they occur. If she gets a call from her DEO handlers, she is obliged to go to them and assist.
Claustrophobic:
"Don't ever put me in the dark. Closed in. It's like I told Superboy. I can't handle it."
- Supergirl (2005) #2
When Kara was in suspended animation after leaving Krypton, it left her in a semi-lucid state. She did not physically age and was unable to move, but she was largely conscious of the world around her between lapses into a dream. The pod she was in was extremely small with a single compartment that only had room for her, and was often dark except for the frequent radiation baths by yellow sun lamps. Kara has come to hate dark, enclosed spaces and will often lash out violently if forced into them.
Enemies:
"Kara Zor-El?! Father - ruined my life! KILL YOU!"
"Not today."
- Supergirl: Rebirth (2016) #1
Supergirl has only been active as a hero for a relatively short time, but she's already made her fair share of enemies. There are people out there in the universe and even on Earth who hate and fear Kryptonians, often seeking to destroy them for the sake of keeping the peace. On top of these there are her cousin's enemies, who continued to operate even after his apparent passing. Kara has also amassed a number of her own villains, many of whom will go to great lengths to harm or even kill her and the ones she loves.
Hypersensitive:
"Hurts, doesn't it? Hypersonics. Only two people and a dog can hear it at that decibel."
- Supergirl (2005) #4
Kara's super hearing allows her to hear any frequency if she focuses, and also enables her to pick up sounds from incredible distances. The only catch is that her senses cannot deal well with exposure to the extremes. High-pitched, incredibly loud sounds cause her great physical pain and while they do not cause any lasting damage they are enough to incapacitate or at least momentarily distract her. Kara's ability to filter out certain sounds does not work on hypersonic attacks like this, and she is usually at the mercy of whoever is making the sound.
Kryptonite:
"Kryptonite. A radioactive element lethal to the touch. Just being close to it - like I'm being held now - can be fatal. I'm screaming, but no sound comes out. I'm crying, but there are no tears. My skin is burning off, but there are no flames. All there is ... all there is ... all I am now ... is the pain."
- Supergirl (2011) #4
This is the weakness of Kryptonians. A radioactive, crystalized substance that was formed by the destruction of the planet Krypton. Precious little of it exists on Earth, but it can be synthesized at great expense. The normal, green version causes Kara great pain and induces extreme fatigue while prolonged exposure will kill her. There are other forms of kryptonite as well, and they have a range of different effects such as sapping her powers, inducing strange transformations, or even inverting her morality entirely. It is a deadly substance, and only lead and similar protections can shield her from it.
Magic:
"That eye -- have to do something. Magic hurts us ..."
- Supergirl (2016) #8
Magic is unbeholden to science, Kara has no real defense against it. Her invulnerability cannot fend it off, and no amount of strength can bend or break substances that disregard the laws of physics completely. When under assault by magic, Kara finds herself as vulnerable as any other normal human. Foes who have mastered the arcane arts are some of her most dangerous enemies.
Overpowered:
" ... this will never feel right. It is like yesterday I was on Krypton. The world was not breakable, I actually knew what quiet was."
- Supergirl (2016) #1
Kara did not have thirty plus years of living on Earth to learn how to moderate her powers. She came from a world where she had all the frailties and strength of an ordinary human being, to one where she could level skyscrapers with a single blow and hear whispered conversations from miles away. While she's learned how to manage all this for the most part, it is still not second nature to her. She needs to be careful not to break things when she picks them up, or to crush hands into powder when she shakes them. It is a slow learning process that will likely take her years to master, and a constant source of frustration.
Primitive Tech:
"I was nearly certified before the Science Council. But the technology here is so rudimentary I hardly know how to use it."
- Supergirl (2016) #1
The technology of Krypton was thousands of years beyond that of modern day Earth, even with its great scientific minds and cutting edge inventors. Kara grew up with this advanced technology, and was well accustomed to it when she came to Earth. She has had difficulty adapting to Earth's primitive technology, finding it hard to understand and operate even simple devices like a telephone or a computer because they are so far from what she is used to. This can occasionally hinder her and even make her look ignorant to normal humans, who are baffled as to why Kara cannot fathom something as simple as a microwave oven.
Secret Identity:
"Do yourselves and each other a favor ... be yourself. It makes life a hell of a lot easier."
- Supergirl (2005) #10
Part of Kara's education about Earth is learning to blend in. It's difficult understanding the people you're protecting if you're constantly floating high above them. To that end, Kara has a secret identity. She wears glasses, changes her posture and voice, and employs a piece of D.E.O. technology that makes her hair appear brown instead of blonde. The downside of this is that she needs to account for her whereabouts when Kara Danvers disappears and Supergirl appears, and if the connection were found out it could pose a very real risk to those she cares about.
Solar Reserves:
"As good as this feels - am I a bad person for admitting that? ... I gotta end this before I'm completely powerless."
- Supergirl (2016) #24
Kara is empowered by yellow sun radiation, which fills her cells and enables her to perform incredible feats. This energy is constantly replenished when she's on Earth, and only extensive periods of overcast weather or being trapped below ground can really inhibit her. If she's away from Earth or otherwise prevented from receiving a regular dose of solar radiation, Kara's powers begin to deplete. Once they're gone, she becomes more or less an average human in terms of her physical capabilities. Brief exposure to sunlight will rapidly restore her, but she needs to fly outside of Earth's atmosphere completely in order to properly regenerate.
