Profile
Most people haven't heard of Remy LeBeau, because he makes an effort to keep it that way. Some may have heard of 'Le Diable Blanc' - the White Devil of the New Orleans Thieves' Guild - if they are in the right circles, but he disappeared years ago. For the most part he's the charming guy at the end of the bar or on the other side of the card table, pressing his luck and just getting by any way he can.
Timeline
Timeline:
1998 - Abandoned at birth due, ostensibly due to his strange black and red eyes, he is stolen from his hospital ward in New Orleans, Louisiana by agents of the New Orleans Thieves Guild and named "Remy" - although the nickname "Le Diable Blanc" (the White Devil) sticks, too.
2008 - Raised as a thief by the Guild, Remy attempts to pick the pocket of Thieves Guild patriarch Jean-Luc LeBeau who adopts him as his son.
2016 - As part of a pact between the Guild of Thieves and the Guild of Assassins, Remy is placed in an arranged marriage with the daughter of the Assassins Guild patriarch Bella Donna Boudreaux. Bella Donna's brother objects and challenges Remy to a duel, in which Remy kills him. Remy is excommunicated from the Thieves Guild and banished from New Orleans.
2017 - Remy wanders the world just attempting to get by. In the course of his wandering he discovers his mutant ability but fails to control them, leading to an accidental death. He is approached by an immortal geneticist dubbed "Mr. Sinister" who teaches Remy to control his powers in exchange for his later services.
2018 - Remy is finally approached again by Mr. Sinister with the task of assembling a group of mercenaries for an attack on a mutant colony beneath Manhattan known as the Morlocks. This group, known as the Marauders, carried out a massacre on the peaceful Morlocks. Remy attempts to stop them, but is gravely wounded in the process. The Marauders are reviled for their attack but Remy's involvement remains a secret.
2020 - Feeling his options vanishing in the wake of the Morlock Massacre, Remy concocts a plan to approach the X-Men and find safety within their ranks ...

Personality
Charmer:
When people meet Remy, this is perhaps what they notice first. He's silver-tongued. He likes to flirt and he's got that slick sort of charm that means he never seems out of place or uncomfortable. He has a talent for setting other people at ease when he wants to, often coaxing them into letting down their guard. In talking to him, he oozes (in a good way) confidence and natural charisma that just doesn't come around every day. He isn't known for being gruff or standoffish - rather, he's usually the first person to approach a potential enemy and try to make a friend, even if it's to make sure they look away for just a second ...
Good-Hearted:
Remy wants to believe a good person. He wants the world to look at him and see a hero, rather than a monster. He's done terrible things in his life, and he's certain he'll never find redemption for them. This conviction that he is damned either way is what leads him to slip at times, to fall back into that roguish lifestyle that he knows so well. But in the end he always tries to shake it off, maybe by handing that fat wallet he stole over to a homeless person or dumping that carload of drugs into the river where it won't end up poisoning some addict. He doesn't always do the right thing (in fact, he more often than not does the okay-but-you-could-have-done-better thing), but in his heart he wants to be a hero and that's what pushes him to keep striving against decades of bad influences.
Guilty:
Under all the bravado, laissez-faire attitude, and charm is an extremely guilty conscience. Remy freely chose to help form the mercenary team that would commit the Morlock Massacre, and though he tried to stop them when he learned what they were doing he failed to do. He feels a tremendous guilt for this, as well as for all the other terrible things he has done in his life. They are the sort of things that keep him up at night or prompt him to dive headfirst into things like alcohol and illicit pharmaceuticals in order to not think about it for a little while. Getting close to Remy, one will almost certainly discover he is hiding some savage inner demons.
Liar:
Either as a result of his training as a thief or because of the fact he spent so much time hiding and laying low, Remy has a strained relationship with the truth. He has a talent for lies, and understanding this talent leads him to fall back on it even when the truth would be better for everyone. It isn't just a matter of survival for him anymore, but rather it is sheer habit. If he can work in a lie, chances are he will. Little white lies about what he's done in the past, or even where he's been earlier that day. By refusing to always tell the truth, he enjoys a certain air of mystery. It doesn't mean he's incapable of it, but if he can get away with it he'll definitely try to.
Survivor:
Remy gets by. No matter what life throws at him, he'll always shoulder his way through and keep on living. He doesn't always do this by fighting. Sometimes he'll lie, cheat, or even beg his way out if he has to. The means is not quite as important to him as just seeing another day. Though his good-hearted nature means he isn't ready to do truly heinous things to get by, the truth is he's never been put in a situation where doing the right thing would mean his death. He'll risk his life for others, sure, but if it looks like a truly hopeless situation there's a good chance he'll try to back out. He's not so much a coward as he is a realist - if he dies, he'll never be able to be that hero he wants to be. A Catch-22.

Powers
Charging:
Gambit's signature power is his molecular acceleration, allowing him to increase the kinetic energy in an object to the point where it becomes unstable and explodes. His preferred method of doing this is charging playing cards and throwing them, causing them to explode on contact with the concussive force of a hand grenade. He can apply this to any item he likes, the larger it is the longer it takes to charge and the grander the potential explosion that follows. His ability only extends to inorganic matter, and attempts to apply it to living creatures and the like typically just result in great stress and unconsciousness without any of the exploding parts. When an item is charged this way, it glows with a flickering violet flame and can be used to slice through toughened materials like concrete and even steel.
Conditioning:
By focusing his mutant ability inward, Gambit is able to enhance his own physical attributes. He becomes faster, stronger, more flexible, and with a greater degree of manual dexterity and agility. When enhancing himself in this way, he is able of performing at the human maximum for a brief time - no ability to hurl tanks through the air or run faster than a bullet, but he definitely becomes physically impressive enough to put even an Olympic athlete to shame. As well as being enhanced physically, when Remy charges himself this way he is able to encourage his cells to heal quicker than the norm. This can heal some injuries that might otherwise be permanent, such as damaged eyes, but the speed is more in the realm of a few hours or days as opposed to seconds.
Disruption:
By applying his abilities on a living creature, Gambit can basically flush all their senses with an overpowering 'static'. The brain's natural response to this is to temporarily shut down, rendering the victim unconscious. A particularly strong mind or one with the ability to heal faster than the usual rate would be harder to stun in this way, while more acute senses would likely get stunned a great deal easier. It requires physical contact to perform, and in a fight it is generally easier to just throw exploding cards at it and hit it with a stick.
Dissolution:
Although it's easier to make things explode by overcharging them with kinetic energy, a little concentration allows Remy to do the opposite and completely sap them of the energy both existing and potential. By doing this, he can cause the molecular structure of the object to break down completely and dissolve - causing the object to melt away to nothing. As with his charging ability, it takes longer to dissolve something the bigger it is. In general, he prefers to deal with smaller items when it comes to his powers. He has not yet learned how to apply it to living creatures, and such knowledge would require significant learning (and amendment to this +sheet entry).
Skills
Bilingual:
Remy speaks Cajun French and English fluently, although he speaks the latter with a strong Cajun accent. He also speaks a smattering of Japanese, though not enough to hold more than a rudimentary conversation.
Card Throwing:
Gambit has mastered the art of card throwing to an absurd degree. He is now able to turn these seemingly innocuous pieces of paper into throwing weapons, hurling them an impressive distance and hard enough to cut flesh or dig into anything soft enough to receive them. When they're charged by his molecular acceleration ability, they are even more dangerous as they can embed in the likes of concrete or steel and typically explode shortly thereafter. It isn't as though he never misses, but generally he will hit his target nine times out of ten and is even skilled enough to throw multiple cards at once.
Con Artistry:
Remy's true talent is for lying. He's mastered it to such a degree that when he speaks, people are inclined to believe he is telling the truth. More inclined to believe him than they would the average person. While those with a sharp mind or particularly strong force of will may not be fooled by him, Remy generally has an easy time talking his way into places or talking others into helping him or doing what he asks. He knows all the tricks of the trade one can use when manipulating people and has the sort of silver-tongue that will likely never require him to work a day in his life.
Martial Arts:
Gambit grew up on the mean streets of New Orleans and mastered the art of throwing a punch early on. Over time, he's learned an array of different combative arts - mostly French kickboxing or Savate and the Japanese art of fighting with a bo-staff known as Bojutsu. Though far from the most skilled fighter in the world, when coupled with his mutant abilities Gambit has the ability to take on multiple opponents at once and would likely be able to summon the sort of talent to impress even the most jaded of combatants.
Sleight of Hand:
Remy is extremely good with his hands. He can do sleight of hand magic like make coins and cards disappear and reappear where he likes them. He knows all manner of card tricks and generally could make a decent living as a street magician if he felt inclined (he's only felt inclined a few times, though).
Theft:
Remy was raised as a member of the Thieves Guild and was the favored son of its leader. Some say he learned to steal before he could even walk, and that doesn't seem like it would be too far from the truth. He is great at sneaking in where he doesn't belong without others noticing, a dab hand at lifting wallets and other items from a person undetected, and has the skillset required to steal cars and break into secure places without much trouble at all. Strictly speaking, Remy has turned stealing things into an artform and he is a true master of his craft.

Artificial Limitations:
In an effort to gain control over his powers, Remy agreed to undertake a surgery that would impact the part of his brain that governed his mutant ability. As such, his powers have been reduced in their capacity somewhat and they do not work on living creatures except for the purposes of stunning them. These limitations are purely artificial and could be removed by a competent surgeon, except Remy isn't aware that they can be undone nor does he know anyone capable of undoing them.
Bad Guy:
Remy may want to do the right thing and be heroic, but he is often tripped up by his desire to stay alive and take the easy way where he can. As such, he is prone to doing things that others might view as villainous or in the very least criminal. This can make it tough to re-earn trust once he has broken it, not to mention it gives him something of a reputation. Once people learn the kind of liar that Remy is, they are unlikely to want to trust him too much going forward.
